With the continuous prosperity and development of the shipping industry, it is necessary and meaningful to plan a safe, green, and efficient route for ships sailing far away. In this study, a hybrid multicriteria ship route planning method based on improved particle swarm optimization–genetic algorithm is presented, which aims to optimize the meteorological risk, fuel consumption, and navigation time associated with a ship. The proposed algorithm not only has the fast convergence of the particle swarm algorithm but also improves the diversity of solutions by applying the crossover operation, selection operation, and multigroup elite selection operation of the genetic algorithm and improving the Pareto optimal frontier distribution. Based on the Pareto optimal solution set obtained by the algorithm, the minimum-navigation-time route, the minimum-fuel-consumption route, the minimum-navigation-risk route, and the recommended route can be obtained. Herein, a simulation experiment is conducted with respect to a container ship, and the optimization route is compared and analyzed. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can plan a series of feasible ship routes to ensure safety, greenness, and economy and that it provides route selection references for captains and shipping companies.
Due to the complex hydrology and narrow channels of inland rivers, ship collision accidents occur frequently. The traditional collision-avoidance algorithms are often aimed at sea areas, and not often at inland rivers. To solve the problem of inland-ship collision avoidance, this paper proposes an inland-ship collision-avoidance decision system based on the velocity obstacle algorithm. The system is designed to assist ships in achieving independent collision-avoidance operations under the limitation of maneuverability while meeting inland-ship collision-avoidance regulations. First, the paper improves the Maneuvering Modeling Group (MMG) model suitable for inland rivers. Then, it improves velocity obstacle algorithms based on the dynamic ship domain, which can deal with different obstacles and three encounter situations (head-on, crossing, and overtaking situations). In addition, this paper proposes a method to deal with close-quarters situations. Finally, the simulation environment built by MATLAB software is used to simulate the collision avoidance of inland ships against different obstacles under different situations with a decision-making time of less than 0.1 s. Through the analysis of the simulation results, the effectiveness and practicability of the system are verified, which can provide reasonable collision-avoidance decisions for inland ships.
A ship collision risk assessment model is an essential part of ship safety navigation. At present, the open water collision risk assessment model (such as the closest point of approach) is applied, but a ship collision risk model suitable for inland rivers is still in the exploration stage. Compared with open waters, the inland waterway has a larger density of ships, and the land and water environments are complex. The existing risk assessment models lack adaptability under the conditions of inland navigation. Therefore, this paper proposes a real-time collision risk assessment method for ships navigating inland rivers. This method utilizes the information of ships’ size in the automatic identification system (AIS) to construct the velocity obstacle cone between convex polygonal targets using the velocity obstacle method. Then, according to the geometric relationship between the relative velocity of two targets and the velocity obstacle cone, a new collision risk assessment model is defined. This model defines two indicators to evaluate the navigation collision risk: the degree of velocity obstacle intrusion (DVOI) and time of velocity obstacle intrusion (TVOI). These two indicators assess the risk of collision, respectively, from two aspects speed and course. In addition, a method using a trajectory compression algorithm to screen collision avoidance operation points in ship AIS trajectory is proposed to screen collision avoidance scenarios in the Yangtze River waterway. The effectiveness of the proposed collision risk model is verified in course-keeping and collision avoidance scenarios and compared with the traditional closest point of approach (CPA) method. The results indicate that the evaluation model for collision risk assessment is more accurate than the CPA method in all scenarios. Finally, this paper uses the Pareto selection algorithm to combine DVOI and TVOI, which can identify the ship that poses the greatest risk to our ship.
Ship collision avoidance measures are important for reducing marine accidents caused by human factors and various natural environmental factors and can also prevent property loss and casualties. In recent years, various methods have been used to study collision avoidance, including ship domain models. This paper proposes a ship domain model based on fuzzy logic aimed at providing early warning of ship collision risk and a reasonable reference that can be used in combination with the International Regulation for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGs). The composition fuzzy inference combining more than one fuzzy inference process is first used to introduce as many factors as possible related to ship collision risk for calculating the ship domain. In this way, the calculation of the ship domain size is more accurate, and a more accurate reference can be provided to sailors, which could save both time and labor by reducing errors. A fuzzy inference system based on if-then fuzzy rules was established in MATLAB and simulation experiments were conducted. The simulation results suggest that the proposed method is feasible and can help sailors make subjective decisions to effectively avoid the occurrence of collision accidents.
When customers decide which product to buy, the perceived risks associated with the purchase are typically part of consideration. The customer’s purchase decision is directly related to the perceived risk about finance, safety, reputation, or others. It is important to incorporate the customer’s perception of risks in user-centered product design. Existing research of risk perception in product development focuses on the warning label design to ensure that consumers are aware of product safety and potential hazards. There is limited work on how to design the product itself with the consideration of risk factors. In this research, the effects of risk perception from consumers on design are studied. The results show that the perceived product safety by customers can be independent from objective measurements of risks. The perceptions are influenced by individual experiences, information obtained from government regulations and standards, as well as personal characteristics. Design variables related to the levels of comfort, aesthetics, and performance for automobile could affect the customers’ perception about vehicle safety.
