The widespread use of glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars in reinforced concrete (RC) elements has yet been limited due to the anisotropic and non-homogeneous material behaviour of GFRP. The material characteristics of GFRP bars from different manufacturers vary as a function of several factors. Several standards have developed various procedures to investigate the mechanical characteristics of GFRP bars, but universal methods to test different types and diameters of GFRP bars in tension have not been fully developed. Due to the lack of such a standardized test procedure, there are some doubts and gaps in terms of the behaviour of GFRP bars in tension, which has led to lack of reliable information on their tensile properties. The determination of tensile characteristics of GFRP bars, including the tensile strength, modulus of elasticity, and ultimate strain, according to various test standards, is the main subject of the paper. This paper reports test results for tensile characterization obtained on four types of GFRP bars from four manufacturers with six various diameters. Moreover, the study compares various test procedures according to seven standards to characterize the tensile properties of GFRP bars, to examine the proposed test procedures, and to reveal main differences.

This paper presents an experimental material campaign focusing on fiber-reinforced polymers (FRP) to be applied in a novel bridge deck panel. Laminas based on most commonly used fibers, i.e., glass, carbon, basalt and aramid, were prepared and studied in tension, shear and compression. In the subsequent test stages, different fabric reinforcements (uni- and bi-directional fabrics, woven fabrics, CSM layers) were considered for glass laminas only, and finally, a resultant laminate was designed and tested. Such an approach gives a great opportunity to create “tailor-made” laminates, as required in FRP bridge deck panels. Simultaneously with the laboratory tests, analytical calculations were performed using a few micromechanical models that aimed to determine engineering constants and strength parameters. Then, the results obtained from material testing and analytical calculations were compared, and conclusions on the compliance were drawn. Based on this validation, further analytical calculations may replace time-consuming laboratory tests and facilitate FRP deck design.

The durability of typical reinforced concrete bridge deck slabs is several times shorter than the durability of the main girders or other basic elements of bridges. This is due to ever-increasing traffic loads and the aggressiveness of the environment, which is intensified by the need for winter maintenance of bridges. Over the past several years, numerous technological, material and construction solutions have been developed in order to extend the technical life of the deck slabs of bridge structures. These include, among others, the use of lightweight concrete and also reinforcements made of composite bars. By combining these two materials into lightweight concrete slabs that are reinforced with GFRP composites, it is possible to obtain a synergy of high strength and durability of GFRP composite and also a reduction of the self-weight of a bridge. The paper presents an overview of the applications of lightweight concrete and GFRP composite bars in the deck slabs of bridge structures. Limited research on this constructional solution, which was completed with its first national implementation on a road bridge, was also presented. Moreover, the directions of further studies, which are necessary to develop the design principles that would enable wider use of this type of bridge deck slabs, were also provided.

The aim of the presented examination is condition-monitoring of GFRP-reinforced concrete structural members using elastic wave propagation. As an example, a deck slab is selected. The deck slab is made of concrete of the targeted C30/37 class under three-point bending. During loading cycles, the specimen is observed with a digital image correlation (DIC) system, which enables calculation of the strain field. The measuring setup consists of two Baumer 12.3 Mpx cameras with VS-1220HV lenses, combined in a Q400 system by Dantec Dynamics GmbH. Elastic waves are also measured based on signals recorded with PZT (lead–zirconate–titanate) sensors. Additionally, the typical crack-opening measurements are made. The appearance of a crack and its growth causes changes in both the shape and amplitude of the registered signals. However, the changes are not obvious and depend on the location of the sensors. Due to the impossibility of determining simple parameters with respect to disturbingly wide cracks, for damage detection, an artificial neural network (ANN) is applied. Perfect determination of the specimen’s condition (100% properly classified patterns) is possible based on whether the element is under loading or not.
