Recent methods of extracting relational triples mainly focus on the overlapping problem and achieve considerable performance. Most previous approaches extract triples solely conditioned on context words, but ignore the potential relations among the extracted entities, which will cause incompleteness in succeeding Knowledge Graphs’ (KGs) construction. Since relevant triples give a clue for establishing implicit connections among entities, we propose a Triple Relation Network (Trn) to jointly extract triples, especially handling extracting implicit triples. Specifically, we design an attention-based entity pair encoding module to identify all normal entity pairs directly. To construct implicit connections among these extracted entities in triples, we utilize our triple reasoning module to calculate relevance between two triples. Then, we select the top-K relevant triple pairs and transform them into implicit entity pairs to predict the corresponding implicit relations. We utilize a bipartite matching objective to match normal triples and implicit triples with the corresponding labels. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method on two public benchmarks, and our proposed model significantly outperforms previous strong baselines.

Entity and relation extraction is a key task in information extraction, where the output can be used for downstream NLP tasks. Existing approaches for entity and relation extraction task mainly focus on the English corpora and ignore other languages. Thus, it is critical to improve performance in a multilingual setting. Meanwhile, multilingual training is usually used to boost cross-lingual performance by transferring knowledge from languages (e.g., high-resource) to other (e.g., low-resource) languages. However, language interference usually exists in multilingual tasks as the model parameters are shared among all languages. In this paper, we propose a two-stage multilingual training method and a joint model called Multilingual Entity and Relation Extraction framework (mERE) to mitigate language interference across languages. Specifically, we randomly concatenate sentences in different languages to train a Language-universal Aggregator (LA), which narrows the distance of embedding representations by obtaining the unified language representation. Then, we separate parameters to mitigate interference via tuning a Language-specific Switcher (LS), which includes several independent submodules to refine the language-specific feature representation. After that, to enhance the relational triple extraction, the sentence representations concatenated with the relation feature are used to recognize the entities. Extensive experimental results show that our method outperforms both the monolingual and multilingual baseline methods. Besides, we also perform detailed analysis to show that mERE is lightweight but effective on relational triple extraction and mERE is easy to transfer to other backbone models of multi-field tasks, which further demonstrates the effectiveness of our method.

Numerical information plays an important role in various fields such as scientific, financial, social, statistics, and news. Most prior studies adopt unsupervised methods by designing complex handcrafted pattern-matching rules to extract numerical information, which can be difficult to scale to the open domain. Other supervised methods require extra time, cost, and knowledge to design, understand, and annotate the training data. To address these limitations, we propose QuantityIE, a novel approach to extracting numerical information as structured representations by exploiting syntactic features of both constituency parsing (CP) and dependency parsing (DP). The extraction results may also serve as distant supervision for zero-shot model training. Our approach outperforms existing methods from two perspectives: (1) the rules are simple yet effective, and (2) the results are more self-contained. We further propose a numerical information retrieval approach based on QuantityIE to answer analytical queries. Experimental results on information extraction and retrieval demonstrate the effectiveness of QuantityIE in extracting numerical information with high fidelity.

New data-driven and physics-based modeling approaches have been applied synergistically to advance the design of sub-kilowatt Hall thrusters. An extensive literature database was compiled and cleaned using a custom program to impute missing values resulting from patents and confidentiality restrictions. Generative adversarial networks (GANs) augmented the limited dataset, covering various thruster geometries and operating conditions. A correlation analysis identified the most influential performance parameters, which served as inputs to a surrogate artificial neural network (ANN) model for rapid design prediction. The ANN predictions were closely aligned with conventional linear regression models, thus validating the approach. Numerical simulations of the ANN-generated designs demonstrated accurate performance projections, highlighting the potential of these new machine-learning techniques in the design of electric propulsion systems. This framework synergized data resources, machine learning models, and high-fidelity simulations to realize next-generation, low-power Hall thrusters.

Quantitative information plays an important part in the financial and data analysis areas. Prior work relied on pattern-matching methods and complex hand-crafted rules to extract quantitative information due to the lack of labeled data. Such methods can be unstable and difficult to scale to the open domain. In this paper, we study quantitative information extraction in the low-resource setting. We propose a search-based approach by searching from the syntactic structures to acquire basic training data. The search process is simple yet effective. Then, a prefix-based text-to-text generation method is employed to extract the quantitative information. The prefix design can fully leverage pre-trained language models for text generation to serve the information extraction purpose. Experimental results show that our approaches achieves high performance with a limited amount of labeled data. The extraction result could further boost the performance of other tasks such as quantitative reasoning.

Cross-lingual open information extraction aims to extract structured information from raw text across multiple languages. Previous work uses a shared cross-lingual pre-trained model to handle the different languages but underuses the potential of the language-specific representation. In this paper, we propose an effective multi-stage tuning framework called MT4CrossIE, designed for enhancing cross-lingual open information extraction by injecting language-specific knowledge into the shared model. Specifically, the cross-lingual pre-trained model is first tuned in a shared semantic space (e.g., embedding matrix) in the fixed encoder and then other components are optimized in the second stage. After enough training, we freeze the pre-trained model and tune the multiple extra low-rank language-specific modules using mixture-of-LoRAs for model-based cross-lingual transfer. In addition, we leverage two-stage prompting to encourage the large language model (LLM) to annotate the multi-lingual raw data for data-based cross-lingual transfer. The model is trained with multi-lingual objectives on our proposed dataset OpenIE4++ by combing the model-based and data-based transfer techniques. Experimental results on various benchmarks emphasize the importance of aggregating multiple plug-in-and-play language-specific modules and demonstrate the effectiveness of MT4CrossIE in cross-lingual OIE\footnote{\url{https://github.com/CSJianYang/Multilingual-Multimodal-NLP}}.
