Background: The pathogenesis of neuropathic pain and the reasons for the prolonged unhealing remain unknown. Increasing evidence suggests that sex oestrogen differences play a role in pain sensitivity, but few studies have focused on the oestrogen receptor which may be an important molecular component contributing to peripheral pain transduction. We aimed to investigate the impact of oestrogen receptors on the nociceptive neuronal response in the dorsal root ganglion (DRG) and spinal dorsal horn using a spared nerve injury (SNI) rat model of chronic pain. Methods: We intrathecally (i.t.) administered a class of oestrogen receptor antagonists and agonists intrathecal (i.t.) administrated to male rats with SNI or normal rats to identify the main receptor. Moreover, we assessed genes identified through genomic metabolic analysis to determine the key metabolism point and elucidate potential mechanisms mediating continuous neuronal sensitization and neuroinflammatory responses in neuropathic pain. The excitability of DRG neurons was detected using the patch-clamp technique. Primary culture was used to extract microglia and DRG neurons, and siRNA transfection was used to silence receptor protein expression. Immunofluorescence, Western blotting, RT-PCR and behavioural testing were used to assess the expression, cellular distribution, and actions of the main receptor and its related signalling molecules. Results: Increasing the expression and function of G protein-coupled oestrogen receptor (GPER), but not oestrogen receptor-α (ERα) and oestrogen receptor-β (ERβ), in the DRG neuron and microglia, but not the dorsal spinal cord, contributed to SNI-induced neuronal sensitization. Inhibiting GPER expression in the DRG alleviated SNI-induced pain behaviours and neuroinflammation by simultaneously downregulating iNOS, IL-1β and IL-6 expression and restoring GABAα2 expression. Additionally, the positive interaction between GPER and β-alanine and subsequent β-alanine accumulation enhances pain sensation and promotes chronic pain development. Conclusion: GPER activation in the DRG induces a positive association between β-alanine with iNOS, IL-1β and IL-6 expression and represses GABAα2 involved in post-SNI neuropathic pain development. Blocking GPER and eliminating β-alanine in the DRG neurons and microglia may prevent neuropathic pain development.
Loess landslides have complicated deformation mechanisms. Accurately describing the internal failure deformation of loess landslides and establishing a theoretical method of landslide instability evaluation for the prevention of subsequent landslides have become important topics in western development project construction in China. This paper presents a case study of the Zhonglou Mountain landslide in Shaanxi Province, China. Based on field investigation results, a two-dimensional stability analysis model was constructed using the finite element method. Taking the deformation characteristics of the landslide as the research basis, the distribution laws of the displacement, stress, and shear strain of this landslide were identified with the strength reduction finite element numerical simulation method. Additionally, the safety factor was evaluated under normal and storm conditions. The numerical simulation results show that the horizontal tensile stress of the landslide was mainly distributed in the middle and upper parts of the landslide under normal conditions, while the vertical tensile stress was distributed near the sliding surface. Under heavy rainfall, the sliding force increased, and the anti-sliding force and anti-sliding section decreased; the location of the maximum shear strain shifted down from the middle and upper parts of the landslide body to the area with a shear crack, and the plastic shear strain area expanded along nearly the entire the sliding surface, leading to the occurrence of a landslide. Thus, the use of anti-slide piles to stabilize the landslide was proposed and tested. Monitoring points were arranged along the sliding surface to evaluate the displacement, stress, and strain responses. The on-site observation results agreed with the modeling results. The use of anti-slide piles was demonstrated to be an effective stabilization method for the Zhonglou Mountain landslide.

Since the 1970s, a large number of loess collapses and landslides have occurred in the Loess Plateau of China due to water diversion and irrigation projects. A large amount of ancient landslide deposits are accumulated at the foot of the tableland, which is likely to slide again in the case of a rapid increase in short-term rainfall or long-term irrigation. The weak characteristics of the sliding zone soil often become the key factor affecting the revival of old landslides. To explore the effects of water content and shear rate on shear behavior of the sliding zone soil, a series of ring shear tests were conducted on reconstituted loess in the South Jingyang Plateau. Experimental results suggest that under the condition of normal consolidation, the soil sample with the optimum moisture content has the highest shear strength. The increase in the shear rate effectively reduces the strength of the soil. Because of the high shear rate, the pore water that cannot be dissipated and fine particles accumulated at the shear plane form a weak base (slurry making theory), which cannot be easily stopped once the landslides start, leading to high-speed and long-distance landslides. In addition, the changes in the soil particles and pores were observed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), and the observations were consistent with macroscopic results. From these studies, we come to the conclusion that the motion mechanism of reactivated landslide was associated with the interaction of water content and shear rate, which reduces the shear strength of the displaced materials to a great extent.
A slope unit is commonly used as calculation unit for regional landslide analysis. However, the capacity of the slope unit to reflect the geomorphological features of actual landslides still needs to be verified. This is because such accurate representation is critical to ensure the physical meaning of results from subsequent landslide stability analysis. This paper presents work conducted on landslides and slope extraction in two areas in China: The Jiangjia Gully area (Yunnan Province) and Fengjie County (Chongqing Municipality). Ground-based light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data are combined with field landslide terrace measurements to allow for the comparison of slope unit extraction methods (conventional vs. MIA-HSU) in terms of their ability to reflect the geomorphological features of shallow and deep-seated landslides. The results indicate that slope unit boundaries extracted by the conventional method do not match the geomorphological variations of actual landslides, and the method is therefore deficient in meaningfully extracting slope units for further landslide analysis. By contrast, slope units obtained using the MIA-HSU method accurately reflects the geomorphological features of both shallow and deep-seated landslides, and thus provides clearer geomorphological meaning and more reasonable calculation units for regional landslide assessment and prediction.
