Since the 1970s, a large number of loess collapses and landslides have occurred in the Loess Plateau of China due to water diversion and irrigation projects. A large amount of ancient landslide deposits are accumulated at the foot of the tableland, which is likely to slide again in the case of a rapid increase in short-term rainfall or long-term irrigation. The weak characteristics of the sliding zone soil often become the key factor affecting the revival of old landslides. To explore the effects of water content and shear rate on shear behavior of the sliding zone soil, a series of ring shear tests were conducted on reconstituted loess in the South Jingyang Plateau. Experimental results suggest that under the condition of normal consolidation, the soil sample with the optimum moisture content has the highest shear strength. The increase in the shear rate effectively reduces the strength of the soil. Because of the high shear rate, the pore water that cannot be dissipated and fine particles accumulated at the shear plane form a weak base (slurry making theory), which cannot be easily stopped once the landslides start, leading to high-speed and long-distance landslides. In addition, the changes in the soil particles and pores were observed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), and the observations were consistent with macroscopic results. From these studies, we come to the conclusion that the motion mechanism of reactivated landslide was associated with the interaction of water content and shear rate, which reduces the shear strength of the displaced materials to a great extent.
Surface-enhanced Raman detection of thiram is demonstrated by using Ag-nanoparticles (Ag NPs) on Au film over nanosphere (AuFON) substrate as the hybrid substrate. The SERS signal of the Ag NPs attached to solid supports is studied. The close coupling together of thousands of Ag NPs on AuFON leads to the generation of hot spots for SERS. The Ag NPs on AuFON can be applied to detect rhodamine-6G (R6G) with the detection limitation of 10−11 M and the pesticide thiram in acetone with a detection limit of as low as 0.24 ppm, which is much lower than the maximal residue limit (MRL) of 7 ppm in fruit prescribed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The hybrid substrates are shown to be highly sensitive for the detection of thriam, which produce highly enhanced Raman signals with good uniformity and reproducibility due to having plenty of hot spots on its surface.
For patients with unresectable advanced gastric cancer, induction chemotherapy could down-stage primary tumors, resulting in conversion surgery becoming possible. However, the feasibility and therapeutic benefit of conversion surgery remains controversial. Therefore, this meta-analysis aimed to systematically review and investigate the efficacy of conversion surgery followed by chemotherapy for unresectable AGC.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common and malignant liver tumor worldwide, although the treatment approaches for HCC continue to evolve, metastasis is the main reason for high mortality rates. S100 calcium-binding protein A11 (S100A11), an important member of the S100 family of small calcium-binding proteins, is overexpressed in various cells and regulates tumor development and metastasis. However, few studies report the role and underlying regulatory mechanisms of S100A11 in HCC development and metastasis. Herein, we discovered that S100A11 is overexpressed and associated with poor clinical outcomes in HCC cohorts, and we provided the first demonstration that S100A11 could serve as a novel diagnostic biomarker used in conjunction with AFP for HCC. Further analysis implied that S100A11 outperforms AFP in determining whether HCC patients have hematogenous metastasis or not. Using in vitro cell culture model, we demonstrated that S100A11 is overexpressed in metastatic hepatoma cells, knockdown of S100A11 decreases hepatoma cells proliferation, migration, invasion, and epithelial-mesenchymal transition process by inhibiting AKT and ERK signaling pathways. Altogether, our study provides new sights into the biological function and mechanisms underlying S100A11 in promoting metastasis of HCC and explores a novel target for HCC diagnosis and treatment.

Background. Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is one of the most frequent and persistent bacterial infections that affect nearly half of the world’s population. Antibiotic resistance is a constantly evolving process and local surveillance of antibiotic resistance is warranted to guide clinicians in their choice of therapy. The aim of this study was to establish a microarray-based detection to identify H. pylori infection, clarithromycin and levofloxacin susceptibility, and CYP2C19 genetic polymorphism and guide to potential choice of proton pump inhibitor (PPI), antibiotic administration for tailored H. pylori eradication therapy. Methods. By analyzing the sequence of human genomic CYP2C192 and CYP2C193 and mutations within the 23S rRNA and gyrA gene regions conferring clarithromycin and levofloxacin resistance, respectively, we developed a microarray for individual therapy detection of H. pylori infection. Plasmids were established as positive or limit of detection (LOD) reference materials. The specificity and sensitivity of the microarray had been performed. And a total of 1083 gastric biopsy samples were tested and the Kappa value had been calculated between the array and Sanger sequencing. We also analyzed the resistance to clarithromycin and levofloxacin in China, as well as the CYP2C19 polymorphisms. Results. The LOD of detecting H. pylori was 103 CFU/mL and human genome DNA was 2 ng/μL. The detection results of 1083 gastric biopsy samples showed that 691 (63.80%) were H. pylori positive, of which 266 (38.49%) were resistant to clarithromycin, 192 (27.79%) were resistant to levofloxacin, and 61 (8.83%) were resistant to both of them. For the type of CYP2C19 polymorphism, 412 (38.04%) were homozygous fast type (HomEM), 574 (53%) were heterozygous EM (HetEM), and 97 (8.96%) were poor metabolizer (PM). Conclusions. The proposed microarray-based detection has high specificity, sensitivity, and reproducibility for detecting the resistance of clarithromycin or levofloxacin as well as CYP2C19 polymorphism, which may help to improve the clinical eradication rate of H. pylori.
