Multibeam satellite communication (SatCom) with frequency reuse configuration is a promising technology to provide wide coverage and high-throughput data delivery services. However, the performance of a SatCom system is limited by the long propagation distance and potential obstructions between the satellite and ground users. To overcome the performance limitation, Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have been considered to enhance the received signal strength at the receiver and provide a virtual line-of-sight path for detouring obstacles. On the other hand, the reflection of signals at RISs brings another challenge regarding frequency reuse configuration since RISs may amplify not only the desired signal but also inter-beam interference due to the satellite antenna radiation patterns. In this paper, the impact of the frequency reuse factor on the sum rate of an RIS-aided multibeam SatCom system is analyzed. Also, to reflect a practical environment, various practical parameters such as environmental attenuation caused by rain fading and distortion noise from the hardware impairments are considered. The closed-form expression of the ergodic sum rate of an RIS-aided multibeam SatCom system is derived using asymptotic and distance-restricted approximations. Simulation results show that the ergodic sum rate obtained from our analysis closely aligns with the actual result. The results also show that the optimal frequency reuse factor can be deterministically obtained according to the available number of RIS elements and the level of hardware impairments.

Digital twin (DT) can help create a digital representation of a physical system, thereby reflecting its realtime status. The digital object, often called cyber twin (CT), facilitates real-time monitoring and control of the physical object, i.e., the so-called physical twin (PT). Owing to this ability, CTs can optimize the PTs and simulate their status, without interrupting the physical world. Given the various CT use cases, one can identify two distinct types of DT tasks: i) update tasks for PT-CT synchronization and ii) inference tasks for obtaining real-time testing responses. The diverse real-time requirements for update/inference tasks raise the task scheduling problem that has been neglected in previous studies. In this paper, the real-time DT task scheduling problem is investigated. In particular, a new approach for evaluating the performance of real-time scheduling of DT tasks is introduced considering the relationship between update/inference tasks and fairness among CTs. Moreover, offline and online DT task scheduling schemes are proposed with the goals of maximizing the DT freshness ratio and minimizing task rejections. In particular, the DT freshness ratio maximization problem is formulated as an offline task scheduling scheme. The proposed offline solution can significantly reduce the solution space without losing optimality. Furthermore, the scheduling policies for achieving the maximal DT freshness ratio are established using which an online scheduling algorithm is designed. Simulation results show that the proposed offline/online schemes increase the DT freshness ratio by at least 16% and 11%, respectively, compared to benchmarks. The results also show that the task rejection ratio of the proposed online algorithm is within 8% of the lower bound

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is a promising solution to support a large volume of data traffic and massive connectivity for future wireless mobile networks. Especially, RIS can mitigate the drawbacks in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, such as the blockage caused by obstacles and the signal processing overhead by constructively and passively reflecting the incident wave toward the destination. In this paper, we provide an asymptotic analysis of the distribution of sum rate (SR) in RIS-aided massive MIMO systems. Using the asymptotic distribution of SR, the achievable scheduling gain and the optimal number of users are determined. In addition, we examined the channel hardening effect and outage probability through the achievable scheduling gain, and the optimal number of users is utilized to develop a low-complexity scheduling algorithm. Simulation results reveal that the SR obtained from our analysis closely aligns with the actual SR. The results also show that the channel hardening effect can vanish with many users thereby achieving the multiuser diversity gain, and an RIS-aided system is more reliable than a conventional massive MIMO system in terms of the outage probability. Furthermore, the proposed scheduling algorithm is shown to reduce computational complexity compared to the conventional scheduling algorithm.

As many industrial applications require real-time and reliability communication, a variety of routing graph construction schemes were proposed to satisfy the requirements in Industrial Wireless Sensor Networks (IWSNs). Each device transmits packet through a route which is designated based on the graph. However, as existing studies consider a network consists of static devices only, they cannot cope with the network changes by movement of mobile devices considered important in the recent industrial environment. Thus, the communication requirements cannot be guaranteed because the existing path is broken by the varying network topology. The communication failure could cause critical problems such as malfunctioning equipment. The problem is caused repeatedly by continuous movement of mobile devices, even if a new graph is reconstructed for responding the changed topology. To support mobile devices exploited in various industrial environments, we propose a Hierarchical Routing Graph Construction (HRGC). The HRGC is consisted of two phases for hierarchical graph construction: In first phase, a robust graph called skeleton graph consisting only of static devices is constructed. The skeleton graph is not affected by network topology changes and does not suffer from packet loss. In second phase, the mobile devices are grafted into the skeleton graph for seamless communication. Through the grafting process, the routes are established in advance for mobile device to communicate with nearby static devices in anywhere. The simulation results show that the packet delivery ratio is improved when the graph is constructed through the HRGC.

LoRa/LoRaWAN is growing rapidly as an underlying technology for the Internet of Things because of its long-range connectivity and low power. However, its limited scalability, owing to spread spectrum-based modulation and contention-based medium access control, impedes its use in emerging massive applications. In this study, we propose a downlink transmission scheme for enhancing the scalability of LoRa networks. The proposed scheme consists of two mechanisms. First, a modulation parameter is adjusted using the different transmission power limitations between the gateways and end devices to reduce downlink duration. Second, the timing of downlink traffic is selected based on uplink traffic concentration analysis. The proposed scheme reduces the uplink failure, and consequently, allows more end devices to participate in the network. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme is superior to the standard protocol in terms of the packet delivery ratio.
