Despite the immense potential in environmental remediation, the translation of magnetic nanomaterials (MNMs) from laboratory innovations to practical, field-scale applications remains hindered by significant technical and environmental challenges. This is particularly evident in soil environments—which are inherently more complex than aquatic systems and have received comparatively less research attention. Beginning with an outline of the fundamental properties that make iron-based MNMs effective as adsorbents and catalysts for heavy metals and organic pollutants, this review systematically examines their core contaminant removal mechanisms. These include adsorption, catalytic degradation (e.g., via Fenton-like reactions), and magnetic recovery. However, the practical implementation of MNMs is constrained by several key limitations, such as particle agglomeration, oxidative instability, and reduced efficacy in multi-pollutant systems. More critically, major uncertainties persist regarding their long-term environmental fate and biocompatibility. In light of these challenges, we propose that future efforts should prioritize the rational design of stable, selective, and intelligent MNMs through advanced surface engineering and interdisciplinary collaboration.

In order to solve the soil problem of poor structure and low fertility after the abandoned homestead reclamation of Hollow Village in Loess Area and to improve the quality of the reclaimed soil in Hollow Village, a five-year field experiment was conducted here. In this experiment, the following seven treatments were applied: no modified material (CK), maturing agent (TM), fly ash (TF), organic fertilizer (TO), maturing agent + fly ash (TMF), maturing agent + organic fertilizer (TMO) and fly ash + organic fertilizer (TFO), and the effects of different improved materials on soil properties and crop yield were studied. The results showed that: soil organic matter (SOM) and total nitrogen contents increased significantly after the application of different improved materials, which promoted the cementation and aggregation of water-stable microaggregates (< 0.25 mm), and the water-stable macroaggregates showed an increasing trend. In the 0–0.15 m soil layer, the proportion of water-stable macroaggregates under TM, TF, TO, TMF, TMO, and TFO treatment increased by 328.2%, 130.0%, 87.8%, 81.1%, 36.7%, and 12.2% compared with CK, respectively. Meanwhile, TF, TO, TMF, TMO, TFO treatments significantly increased the mean weight diameter (MWD) and geometric mean diameter (GMD) values, reduced soil bulk density, the stable aggregate index (ELT) and fractal dimension (D) values (P < 0.05), and the stability of soil structure and the capacity of soil moisture retention has been significantly improved. The SOM content had a significant positive correlation with MWD, GMD, and > 2 mm water-stable aggregates and a significant negative correlation with the ELT, D, and water-stable microaggregates. In particular, the organic–inorganic coupling treatment of TFO showed the highest SOM content, soil moisture content, water-stable macroaggregates and maize yield, which was the most appropriate amendment for improving the reclaimed soil structure and fertility of Hollow Village in Loess Area.

Reasonable application of organic-inorganic soil conditioners can effectively improve the structure and fertility of reclaimed soil in abandoned homestead. Aggregate stability is an important indicator to evaluate soil structure and fertility, and is largely influenced by soil internal forces (van der Waals attractive force, electrostatic repulsive force, hydration repulsive force) and particle surface properties. However, there are few studies on the influence of different soil conditioners on the reclaimed soil internal forces and its relationship with the aggregate stability. Therefore, we selected six different treatments of organic fertilizer (TO), fly ash (TF), maturing agent (TM), maturing agent + organic fertilizer (TMO), fly ash + organic fertilizer (TFO) and control (CK) to conduct a 5-year field experiment to study the effects of reclaimed soil particle interaction forces and surface characteristics on aggregate stability under the treatment of different soil conditioners. The results showed that with the application of soil conditioners, the soil organic matter (SOM), specific surface area (SSA), surface charge (σ 0 ), cation exchange capacity (CEC), aggregate mean weight diameter (MWD) and Hamaker constant increased gradually, while the pH value decreased slightly. In particular, the MWD under the treatments of TFO and TMO increased by 150.3% and 65.6% respectively compared with that under the CK treatment. With the increasing application of soil conditioners, the electrostatic repulsive force and van der Waals attractive force between reclaimed soil particles increased constantly, but the net resultant force between particles decreased and the net attractive force increased continuously, thus improving the aggregate stability. Therefore, there is a significant negative correlation between the net resultant force among reclaimed soil particles and MWD and CEC. In addition, 10 −2 mol L -1 is the critical concentration that affects the reclaimed soil internal force, and the organic-inorganic treatments of TFO and TMO can improve the net resultant force better. In a word, the particle interaction forces are important factors affecting the reclaimed soil structural stability, and this study provides a scientific reference for the rational selection of soil conditioners and its interaction force mechanism in the reclaimed soil improvement.

Soil structural stability is fundamentally linked to soil functionality and sustainable productivity. Rheological properties describe the deformation and flow behavior of soil under external stress, playing a crucial role in understanding soil structure stability. Despite their importance, the studies about rheological properties of black soils in Northeast China remain limited. This study aims to assess the rheological properties of two kinds of black soil with different degrees of degradation in Northeast China. The rheological parameters of these soils under various water contents and shearing were quantified by conducting Amplitude Sweep Tests (ASTs) and Rotational Sweep Tests (RSTs). Both AST and RST results showed that as soil water content and shear rate increased, shear strength, viscosity, and hysteresis area all decreased in Keshan and Binxian black soils. The increase in soil water content reduces the friction between soil particles, leading to a decrease in soil structure stability. Additionally, the viscosity and hysteresis area of the two soils decreased with the increase in water content, making it more flowable and exhibiting shear-thinning behavior. Keshan black soil exhibited stronger recovery and shear strength compared to Binxian black soil; this is mainly due to the higher organic matter content in Keshan soil, which could increase structural stability by bonding the soil particles at the micro-level. These findings enhance our understanding about the structure stability of the black soils based on the rheological parameters via rheometer.

In order to study the effects of different organic materials on soil quality and crop yield, a seven -year, s field experiment was conducted in North China Plain. The experiment included six treatments: no organic materials (CK), compost (C), Cow Dung (PM), biogas residue (BgR), crop straw (Str), biochar (BC), all samples were separated into four aggregate-size classes by wet sieving, meanwhile we calculated the mean weight diameter (MWD), geometric mean diameter (GMD), fractal dimension (D) and unstable aggregate index (ELT ) of water-table aggregates. Compared with the CK treatment, the application of organic materials in 0~15 cm soil layer not only significantly increased MWD, GMD) of water-table aggregates (P<0.05), but also decreased the D and ELT of water-table aggregates. Also, the content of soil organic carbon (SOC) and total nitrogen (TN) increased significantly under different organic materials treatments (P <0.05), therefore, the nutrient content and structural stability of soil was significantly enhanced. The total yield of wheat and maize of C, PM, Bg, S and BC treatments increased by 75.5%, 69.7%, 108.9%, 34.1% and 1.0%. The improvement effects of aggregate stability index and soil structure of BC and Str treatments were the best, while C, BC and BgR treatments were better to increase the content of SOC and TN in bulk soil. The application of organic materials could increase the content of SOC and TN, enhance the soil water-stability aggregate stabilization and soil fertility, while increase crop yield.
