The increase in environmental temperature due to global warming is a critical threat to plant growth and productivity. Heat stress can cause impairment in several biochemical and physiological processes. Plants sense and respond to this adverse environmental condition by activating a plethora of defense systems. Among them, the heat stress response (HSR) involves an intricate network of heat shock factors (HSFs) and heat shock proteins (HSPs). However, a growing amount of evidence suggests that reactive oxygen species (ROS), besides potentially being responsible for cellular oxidative damage, can act as signal molecules in HSR, leading to adaptative responses. The role of ROS as toxic or signal molecules depends on the fine balance between their production and scavenging. Enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants represent the first line of defense against oxidative damage and their activity is critical to maintaining an optimal redox environment. However, the HS-dependent ROS burst temporarily oxidizes the cellular environment, triggering redox-dependent signaling cascades. This review provides an overview of the redox-activated mechanisms that participate in the HSR.

In this paper volatile organic compounds (VOCs) fromTuber magnatumfruiting bodies were analyzed using a PTR-TOF-MS instrument. The aim was to characterize the VOC's profile of the fruiting bodies and identify if any VOCs were specific to a season and geographical areas. Multiple factorial analysis (MFA) was carried out on the signals obtained by MS. Experiments using ITS region sequencing proved that theT. magnatumlife cycle includes the formation of fruiting bodies at two different times of the year. The VOCs profiles diverge when different seasonal and geographical productions are considered. Using PTR-TOF-MS, compounds present at levels as low pptv were detected. This made it possible to determine both the origin of fruiting bodies (Alba and San Miniato) and the two biological phases of fruiting bodies formation in San Miniato truffles.

Biometric and physiological analyses of salt stress responses were performed in two time-course experiments on giant reed (Arundo donax L). Experiment I evaluated biomass production in plants exposed to 128, 256, 512 mM NaCl for 84 days. For Experiment II, plants grown under 256 mM NaCl were further assessed for chlorophyll a fluorescence, ionic partitioning, and proline content at 14 and 49 days after treatment (DAT). Biomass allocation was affected with all the concentrations of NaCl used from 28 DAT onward. Proline biosynthesis in leaves was more stimulated than that in roots after salt stress. Photosynthetic efficiency of photosystem II (PSII) was not affected by salt stress up to 42 DAT, while 49 DAT plants exhibited a significant reduction of both potential (ΦPSII) and maximal (Fv/Fm) PSII quantum yield. A. donax resulted a moderately sensitive species in response to 256 and 512 mM NaCl, concentrations that are however higher than that commonly found in most marginal lands (such as 128 mM or lower), where the biomass yield is appreciable, especially in short-term cultivation (56 DAT here). Altogether, this study indicates that A. donax can be considered as a promising and valuable energy crop for exploiting the Mediterranean marginal land.

Legumes maintain soil fertility thanks to their associated microbiota but are threatened by climate change that causes soil microbial community structural and functional modifications. The core microbiome associated with different chickpea and lentil genotypes was described after an unexpected climatic event. Results showed that chickpea and lentil bulk soil microbiomes varied significantly between two sampling time points, the first immediately after the rainfall and the second 2 weeks later. Rhizobia were associated with the soil of the more productive chickpea genotypes in terms of flower and fruit number. The root‐associated bacteria and fungi were surveyed in lentil genotypes, considering that several parcels showed disease symptoms. The metabarcoding analysis revealed that reads related to fungal pathogens were significantly associated with one lentil genotype. A lentil core prokaryotic community common to all genotypes was identified as well as a genotype‐specific one. A higher number of specific bacterial taxa and an enhanced tolerance to fungal diseases characterized a lentil landrace compared to the commercial varieties. This outcome supported the hypothesis that locally adapted landraces might have a high recruiting efficiency of beneficial soil microbes.
