With the development of satellite and remote sensing techniques, more and more image data from airborne/satellite sensors have become available. Multi-sensor image fusion seeks to combine information from different images to obtain more inferences than can be derived from a single sensor. In image-based application fields, image fusion has emerged as a promising research area since the end of the last century. The paper presents an overview of recent advances in multi-sensor satellite image fusion. Firstly, the most popular existing fusion algorithms are introduced, with emphasis on their recent improvements. Advances in main applications fields in remote sensing, including object identification, classification, change detection and maneuvering targets tracking, are described. Both advantages and limitations of those applications are then discussed. Recommendations are addressed, including: (1) Improvements of fusion algorithms; (2) Development of “algorithm fusion” methods; (3) Establishment of an automatic quality assessment scheme.

The air quality in China, particularly the PM2.5 (particles less than 2.5 μm in aerodynamic diameter) level, has become an increasing public concern because of its relation to health risks. The distribution of PM2.5 concentrations has a close relationship with multiple geographic and socioeconomic factors, but the lack of reliable data has been the main obstacle to studying this topic. Based on the newly published Annual Average PM2.5 gridded data, together with land use data, gridded population data and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) data, this paper explored the spatial-temporal characteristics of PM2.5 concentrations and the factors impacting those concentrations in China for the years of 2001–2010. The contributions of urban areas, high population and economic development to PM2.5 concentrations were analyzed using the Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) model. The results indicated that the spatial pattern of PM2.5 concentrations in China remained stable during the period 2001–2010; high concentrations of PM2.5 are mostly found in regions with high populations and rapid urban expansion, including the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region in North China, East China (including the Shandong, Anhui and Jiangsu provinces) and Henan province. Increasing populations, local economic growth and urban expansion are the three main driving forces impacting PM2.5 concentrations.

Crop above-ground biomass (AGB) is a key parameter used for monitoring crop growth and predicting yield in precision agriculture. Estimating the crop AGB at a field scale through the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is promising for agronomic application, but the robustness of the methods used for estimation needs to be balanced with practical application. In this study, three UAV remote sensing flight missions (using a multiSPEC-4C multispectral camera, a Micasense RedEdge-M multispectral camera, and an Alpha Series AL3-32 Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) sensor onboard three different UAV platforms) were conducted above three long-term experimental plots with different tillage treatments in 2018. We investigated the performances of the multi-source UAV-based 3D point clouds at multi-spatial scales using the traditional multi-variable linear regression model (OLS), random forest (RF), backpropagation neural network (BP), and support vector machine (SVM) methods for accurate AGB estimation. Results showed that crop height (CH) was a robust proxy for AGB estimation, and that high spatial resolution in CH datasets helps to improve maize AGB estimation. Furthermore, the OLS, RF, BP, and SVM methods all maintained an acceptable accuracy for AGB estimation; however, the SVM and RF methods performed slightly more robustly. This study is expected to optimize UAV systems and algorithms for specific agronomic applications.

Solar energy is the most clean renewable energy source and has good prospects for future sustainable development. Installation of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems on building rooftops has been the most widely applied method for using solar energy resources. In this study, we developed an approach to simulate the monthly and annual solar radiation on rooftops at an hourly time step to estimate the solar PV potential, based on rooftop feature retrieval from remote sensing images. The rooftop features included 2D rooftop outlines and 3D rooftop parameters retrieved from high-resolution remote sensing image data (obtained from Google Maps) and digital surface model (DSM, generated from the Pleiades satellite), respectively. We developed the building features calculation method for five rooftop types: flat rooftops, shed rooftops, hipped rooftops, gable rooftops and mansard rooftops. The parameters of the PV modules derived from the building features were then combined with solar radiation data to evaluate solar photovoltaic potential. The proposed method was applied in the Chao Yang District of Beijing, China. The results were that the number of rooftops available for PV systems was 743, the available rooftop area was 678,805 m2, and the annual PV electricity potential was 63.78 GWh/year in the study area, which has great solar PV potential. The method to perform precise calculation of specific rooftop solar PV potential developed in this study will guide the formulation of energy policy for solar PV in the future.

The Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellite provides a new method for terrestrial hydrology research, which can be used for improving the monitoring result of the spatial and temporal changes of water cycle at large scale quickly. The paper presents a review of recent applications of GRACE data in terrestrial hydrology monitoring. Firstly, the scientific GRACE dataset is briefly introduced. Recently main applications of GRACE data in terrestrial hydrological monitoring at large scale, including terrestrial water storage change evaluation, hydrological components of groundwater and evapotranspiration (ET) retrieving, droughts analysis, and glacier response of global change, are described. Both advantages and limitations of GRACE data applications are then discussed. Recommendations for further research of the terrestrial water monitoring based on GRACE data are also proposed.

Global changes, such as human activities and climate change, increase the odds of worsening drought. The Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellite provides an opportunity to monitor drought levels by the total amount of water, instead of using a small finite set of water cycle elements or indirect indicators. The potential gap lies in the insufficient size of the GRACE record. The database does not meet the requirements of a stationary annual cycle calculated over a relatively long period as recommended by the IPCC, and the disturbance from long-term global changes is often not considered. In this work, a GRACE-based modulated water deficit (GRACE-MWD) process for drought monitoring under the modulated annual cycle (MAC) reference frame in southwest China was proposed. GRACE-MWD achieved a higher ratio of agreement with the standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index at a time scale of 3 months (SPEI03): it ranged from 0.48 to 0.84, while the GRACE-based drought severity index (GRACE-DSI) ranged from 0.48 to 0.68. Compared with remote sensing datasets widely used in drought monitoring, GRACE-MWD data are less affected by seasonality from land-cover categories, which benefit from the MAC reference frame. The ratio-of-agreement metric for the study area showed that GRACE-MWD had a time scale between 7 and 11 months in reference to SPEI and the standardized precipitation index (SPI). The stability of the MAC reference frame to GRACE-MWD was further discussed when GRACE records were extended and was more stable than that of the stationary annual cycle. GRACE-MWD meets global changes via an adaptive reference frame, which is worthy of generalizing to global applications.
