The facial expressions are a mirror of the elusive emotion hidden in the mind, and thus, capturing expressions is a crucial way of merging the inward world and virtual world. However, typical facial expression recognition (FER) systems are restricted by environments where faces must be clearly seen for computer vision, or rigid devices that are not suitable for the time-dynamic, curvilinear faces. Here, we present a robust, highly wearable FER system that is based on deep-learning-assisted, soft epidermal electronics. The epidermal electronics that can fully conform on faces enable high-fidelity biosignal acquisition without hindering spontaneous facial expressions, releasing the constraint of movement, space, and light. The deep learning method can significantly enhance the recognition accuracy of facial expression types and intensities based on a small sample. The proposed wearable FER system is superior for wide applicability and high accuracy. The FER system is suitable for the individual and shows essential robustness to different light, occlusion, and various face poses. It is totally different from but complementary to the computer vision technology that is merely suitable for simultaneous FER of multiple individuals in a specific place. This wearable FER system is successfully applied to human-avatar emotion interaction and verbal communication disambiguation in a real-life environment, enabling promising human-computer interaction applications.

Background: Parkinson’s disease is primarily characterized by the degeneration of motor neurons, leading to significant impairments in movement. Initially, physical therapy was predominantly employed to address these motor issues through targeted rehabilitation exercises. However, recent research has indicated that cognitive training can enhance the quality of life for patients with Parkinson’s. Consequently, some researchers have posited that the simultaneous engagement in computer-assisted motor and cognitive dual-task (CADT) may yield superior therapeutic outcomes. Methods: A comprehensive literature search was performed across various databases, and studies were selected following PRISMA guidelines, focusing on CADT rehabilitation interventions. Results: Dual-task training enhances Parkinson’s disease (PD) rehabilitation by automating movements and minimizing secondary task interference. The inclusion of a sensor system provides real-time feedback to help patients make immediate adjustments during training. Furthermore, CADT promotes more vigorous participation and commitment to training exercises, especially those that are repetitive and can lead to patient boredom and demotivation. Virtual reality-tailored tasks, closely mirroring everyday challenges, facilitate more efficient patient adaptation post-rehabilitation. Conclusions: Although the current studies are limited by small sample sizes and low levels, CADT rehabilitation presents as a significant, effective, and potential strategy for PD.

Multi-user locomotion in VR has grown increasingly common, posing numerous challenges. A key factor contributing to these challenges is the gaps in experience between active and passive users during co-locomotion. Yet, there remains a limited understanding of how and to what extent these experiential gaps manifest in diverse multi-user co-locomotion scenarios. This paper systematically explores the gaps in physiological and psychological experience indicators between active and passive users across various locomotion situations. Such situations include when active users walk, fly by joystick, or teleport, and passive users stand still or look around. We also assess the impact of factors such as sub-locomotion type, speed/teleport-interval, motion sickness susceptibility, etc. Accordingly, we delineate acceptability disparities between active and passive users, offering insights into leveraging notable experimental findings to mitigate discomfort during co-locomotion through avoidance or intervention.

Sketching in Virtual Reality (VR) is challenging mainly due to the absence of physical surface support and virtual depth perception cues, which induce high cognitive and sensorimotor load. This paper presents WieldingCanvas, an interactive VR sketching platform that integrates canvas manipulations to draw lines and curves in 3D. Informed by real-life examples of two-handed creative activities, WieldingCanvas interprets users’ spatial gestures to move, swing, rotate, transform, or fold a virtual canvas, whereby users simply draw primitive strokes on the canvas, which are turned into finer and more sophisticated shapes via the manipulation of the canvas. We evaluated the capability and user experience of WieldingCanvas with two studies where participants were asked to sketch target shapes. A set of freehand sketches of high aesthetic qualities were created, and the results demonstrated that WieldingCanvas can assist users with creating 3D sketches.
