As one of the most principal meteorological factors to affect global climate change and human sustainable development, temperature plays an important role in biogeochemical and hydrosphere cycle. To date, there are a wide range of temperature data sources and only a detailed understanding of the reliability of these datasets can help us carry out related research. In this study, the hourly and daily near-surface air temperature observations collected at national automatic weather stations (NAWS) in China were used to compare with the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) Land Data Assimilation System (CLDAS) and the Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS), both of which were developed by using the advanced multi-source data fusion technology. Results are as follows. (1) The spatial and temporal variations of the near-surface air temperature agree well between CLDAS and GLDAS over major land of China, except that spatial details in high mountainous areas were not sufficiently displayed in GLDAS; (2) The near-surface air temperature of CLDAS were more significantly correlated with observations than that of GLDAS, but more caution is necessary when using the data in mountain areas as the accuracy of the datasets gradually decreases with increasing altitude; (3) CLDAS can better illustrate the distribution of areas of daily maximum above 35 °C and help to monitor high temperature weather. The main conclusion of this study is that CLDAS near-surface air temperature has a higher reliability in China, which is very important for the study of climate change and sustainable development in East Asia.

Near-surface wind data are particularly important for Hainan Island and the South China Sea, and there is a wide range of wind data sources. A detailed understanding of the reliability of these datasets can help us to carry out related research. In this study, the hourly near-surface wind data from the High-Resolution China Meteorological Administration (CMA) Land Data Assimilation System (HRCLDAS) and the fifth-generation ECMWF atmospheric reanalysis data (ERA5) were evaluated by comparison with the ground automatic meteorological observation data for Hainan Island and the South China Sea. The results are as follows: (1) the HRCLDAS and ERA5 near-surface wind data trend was basically the same as the observation data trend, but there was a smaller bias, smaller root-mean-square errors, and higher correlation coefficients between the near-surface wind data from HRCLDAS and the observations; (2) the quality of HRCLDAS and ERA5 near-surface wind data was better over the islands of the South China Sea than over Hainan Island land. However, over the coastal areas of Hainan Island and island stations near Sansha, the quality of the HRCLDAS near-surface wind data was better than that of ERA5; (3) the quality of HRCLDAS near-surface wind data was better than that of ERA5 over different types of landforms. The deviation of ERA5 and HRCLDAS wind speed was the largest along the coast, and the quality of the ERA5 wind direction data was poorest over the mountains, whereas that of HRCLDAS was poorest over hilly areas; (4) the accuracy of HRCLDAS at all wind levels was higher than that of ERA5. ERA5 significantly overestimated low-grade winds and underestimated high-grade winds. The accuracy of HRCLDAS wind ratings over the islands of the South China Sea was significantly higher than that over Hainan Island land, especially for the higher wind ratings; and (5) in the typhoon process, the simulation of wind by HRCLDAS was closer to the observations, and its simulation of higher wind speeds was more accurate than the ERA5 simulations.

Temperature is one of the most important meteorological variables for global climate change and human sustainable development. It plays an important role in agroclimatic regionalization and crop production. To date, temperature data have come from a wide range of sources. A detailed understanding of the reliability and applicability of these data will help us to better carry out research in crop modelling, agricultural ecology and irrigation. In this study, temperature reanalysis products produced by the China Meteorological Administration Land Data Assimilation System (CLDAS), the U.S. Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS) and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) Reanalysis version5 (ERA5)-Land are verified against hourly observations collected from 2265 national automatic weather stations (NAWS) in China for the period 2017–2019. The above three reanalysis systems are advanced and widely used multi-source data fusion and re-analysis systems at present. The station observations have gone through data Quality Control (QC) and are taken as “true values” in the present study. The three reanalysis temperature datasets were spatial interpolated using the bi-linear interpolation method to station locations at each time. By calculating the statistical metrics, the accuracy of the gridded datasets can be evaluated. The conclusions are as follows. (1) Based on the evaluation of temporal variability and spatial distribution as well as correlation and bias analysis, all the three reanalysis products are reasonable in China. (2) Statistically, the CLDAS product has the highest accuracy with the root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.83 °C. The RMSEs of the other two reanalysis datasets produced by ERA5-Land and GLDAS are 2.72 °C and 2.91 °C, respectively. This result indicates that the CLDAS performs better than ERA5-Land and GLDAS, while ERA5-Land performs better than GLDAS. (3) The accuracy of the data decreases with increasing elevation, which is common for all of the three products. This implies that more caution is needed when using the three reanalysis temperature data in mountainous regions with complex terrain. The major conclusion of this study is that the CLDAS product demonstrates a relatively high reliability, which is of great significance for the study of climate change and forcing crop models.

Surface air temperature is a critical element in the surface–atmosphere interaction, energy exchange, and water cycle. Multi-source fusion reanalysis products (hereafter referred to as reanalysis) have spatiotemporal continuity and broad applicability that can provide key data support for various studies such as glacier melting, soil freeze-thaw and desertification, ecosystem, and climate change in the alpine region of the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau (QTP). Surface air temperature observations collected at 17 weather stations in the High-cold region Observation and Research Network for Land Surface Process and Environment of China (HORN) over the period of 2017–2018 are implemented to evaluate the advanced and widely used surface air temperature reanalysis datasets, which include the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) Fifth Generation Land Surface Reanalysis (ERA5L), the U.S. Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS), and China Meteorological Administration Land Data Assimilation System (CLDAS). Results are as follows: (1) Evaluation results of temporal changes and spatial distribution characteristics indicate that the three reanalysis datasets are consistent with in-situ observations in the alpine region of the QTP. CLDAS is more consistent with observations and can better describe details of temperature distribution and variation than ERA5L and GLDAS. (2) For the evaluation period, CLDAS is 0.53 °C higher than the in-situ observation, while ERA5L and GLDAS are lower than the in-situ observation by −3.45 °C and −1.40 °C, respectively. (3) The accuracy of CLDAS is better than ERA5L and GLDAS under different elevations and land covers. We resampled three reanalysis datasets with a spatial resolution of 0.25° and used the two most common interpolation methods to analyze the impact of spatial resolution and different interpolation methods on the evaluation results. We found that the impact is small. In summary, the three reanalysis datasets all have certain applicability in the alpine region of the QTP, and the accuracy of CLDAS is significantly higher than ERA5L and GLDAS. The results of the present paper have important implications for the selection of reanalysis data in the studies of climate, ecosystem, and sustainable development in the QTP.

High-resolution gridded 2 m air temperature datasets are important input data for global and regional climate change studies, agrohydrologic model simulations and numerical weather predictions, etc. In this study, the digital elevation model (DEM) is used to correct temperature forecasts produced by ECMWF. The multi-grid variation formulation method is then used to fuse the data from corrected temperature forecasts and ground automatic station observations. The fused dataset covers the area over (0–60°N, 70–140°S), where different underlying surfaces exist, such as plains, basins, plateaus, and mountains. The spatial and temporal resolutions are 1 km and 1 h, respectively. The comparison of the fusion data with the verification observations, including 2400 weather stations, indicates that the accuracy of the gridded temperature is superior to European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) data. This is because a more significant number of stations and high-resolution terrain data are used to generate the fusion data than are utilized in the ECMWF. The obtained dataset can describe the temperature feature of peaks and valleys more precisely. Due to its continuous temporal coverage and consistent quality, the fusion dataset is one of China’s most widely used temperature datasets. However, data uncertainty will increase for areas with sparse observations and high mountains, and we must be cautious when using data from these areas.

Near-surface air temperature is important for climate change, agriculture, animal husbandry, and ecosystems undergoing climate warming in Inner Mongolia. Land surface reanalysis products feature finer spatial and temporal resolutions, that can provide important data support for the determination of crop growth limits, grassland biomass growth, and desertification research in Inner Mongolia. In this study, 119 in situ observed sites were collected to compare and evaluate the performance of near-surface air temperature in three reanalysis products from 2018 to 2020 in Inner Mongolia. The three reanalysis products included three widely used products derived from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) Fifth Generation Land Surface Reanalysis (ERA5-Land), and U.S. Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS), as well as the latest reanalysis product from the High-Resolution Land Data Assimilation System reanalysis product by the China Meteorological Administration (HRCLDAS). Results are as follows: (1) The three reanalysis temperature products all reasonably reflect the characteristics of spatial and temporal changes in surface temperature in Inner Mongolia. Compared with ERA5L and GLDAS, HRCLDAS is more consistent with the observed results. (2) For the evaluation period, HRCLDAS has a certain underestimation of temperature, while ERA5-Land and GLDAS have a significant overestimation of temperature. (3) During high-temperature processes, HRCLDAS is more accurate in simulating higher temperatures than ERA5-LNAD and can demonstrate the changes in high-temperature drop zones. The major conclusion of this study is that the HRCLDAS product demonstrates a relatively high reliability, which is of great significance for the study of climate, ecosystem, and sustainable development.
