As one of the most principal meteorological factors to affect global climate change and human sustainable development, temperature plays an important role in biogeochemical and hydrosphere cycle. To date, there are a wide range of temperature data sources and only a detailed understanding of the reliability of these datasets can help us carry out related research. In this study, the hourly and daily near-surface air temperature observations collected at national automatic weather stations (NAWS) in China were used to compare with the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) Land Data Assimilation System (CLDAS) and the Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS), both of which were developed by using the advanced multi-source data fusion technology. Results are as follows. (1) The spatial and temporal variations of the near-surface air temperature agree well between CLDAS and GLDAS over major land of China, except that spatial details in high mountainous areas were not sufficiently displayed in GLDAS; (2) The near-surface air temperature of CLDAS were more significantly correlated with observations than that of GLDAS, but more caution is necessary when using the data in mountain areas as the accuracy of the datasets gradually decreases with increasing altitude; (3) CLDAS can better illustrate the distribution of areas of daily maximum above 35 °C and help to monitor high temperature weather. The main conclusion of this study is that CLDAS near-surface air temperature has a higher reliability in China, which is very important for the study of climate change and sustainable development in East Asia.

Amplifying landslide hazards in the backdrop of warming climate and intensifying human activities calls for an integrated framework for accurately evaluating landslide susceptibility at fine spatiotemporal resolutions, which is critical for the mitigation of increasingly high landslide disaster risks. Yet, dynamic landslide susceptibility mapping is still lacking. Using high-quality data, from 14,435 landslides and non-landslides, we developed an efficient holistic framework for evaluating landslide susceptibility, considering landslide-relevant internal and external factors based on cloud computing platform and algorithmic models, which enables dynamic updating of a landslide susceptibility map at the regional scale, particularly in regions with highly complicated topographical features such as the Hengduan Mountains, as considered in this study. We compared Classification and Regression Trees (CART), Support Vector Machines (SVM), and Random Forest (RF) classifiers to screen out the best portfolio model for landslide susceptibility mapping on the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform. We found that the Random Forest (RF) classifier integrated with synergy mode had the best modeling performance, with 90.48% and 89.24% accuracy and precision, respectively. We also found that forests and grasslands had the controlling effect on the occurrence of landslides, while human activities had a notable inducing effect on the occurrence of landslides within the Hengduan Mountains. This study highlights the performance of the holistic landslide susceptibility evaluation framework proposed in this study and provides a viable technique for landslide susceptibility evaluation in other regions of the globe.

High temporal resolution and spatially complete (seamless) land surface temperature (LST) play a crucial role in numerous geoscientific aspects. This paper proposes a data fusion method for producing hourly seamless LST from Himawari-8 Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI) data. First, the high-quality hourly clear-sky LST was retrieved from AHI data by an improved temperature and emissivity separation algorithm; then, the hourly spatially complete China Land Data Assimilation System (CLDAS) LST was calibrated by a bias correction method. Finally, the strengths of the retrieved AHI LST and bias-corrected CLDAS LST were combined by the multiresolution Kalman filter (MKF) algorithm to generate hourly seamless LST at different spatial scales. Validation results showed the bias and root mean square error (RMSE) of the fused LST at a finer scale (0.02°) were −0.65 K and 3.38 K under cloudy sky conditions, the values were −0.55 K and 3.03 K for all sky conditions, respectively. The bias and RMSE of the fused LST at the coarse scale (0.06°) are −0.46 K and 3.11 K, respectively. This accuracy is comparable to the accuracy of all-weather LST derived by various methods reported in the published literature. In addition, we obtained the consistent LST images across different scales. The seamless finer LST data over East Asia can not only reflect the spatial distribution characteristics of LST during different seasons, but also exactly present the diurnal variation of the LST. With the proposed method, we have produced a 0.02° seamless LST dataset from 2016 through 2021 that is freely available at the National Tibetan Plateau Data Center. It is the first time that we can obtain the hourly seamless LST data from AHI.

Precipitation serves as a crucial factor in the study of hydrometeorology, ecology, and the atmosphere. Gridded precipitation data are available from a multitude of sources including precipitation retrieved by satellites, radar, the output of numerical weather prediction models, and extrapolation by ground rain gauge data. Evaluating different types of products in ungauged regions with complex terrain will not only help researchers in applying scientific data, but also provide useful information that can be used to improve gridded precipitation products. The present study aims to evaluate comprehensively 12 precipitation datasets made by raw retrieved products, blended with rain gauge data, and blended multiple source datasets in multi-temporal scales in order to develop a suitable method for creating gridded precipitation data in regions with snow-dominated regions with complex terrain. The results show that the Multi-Source Weighted-Ensemble Precipitation (MSWEP), Global Satellite Mapping of Precipitation with Gauge Adjusted (GSMaP_GAUGE), Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM_3B42), Climate Prediction Center Morphing Technique blended with Chinese observations (CMORPH_SUN), and Climate Hazards Group Infrared Precipitation with Stations (CHIRPS) can represent the spatial pattern of precipitation in arid/semi-arid and humid/semi-humid areas of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau on a climatological spatial pattern. On interannual, seasonal, and monthly scales, the TRMM_3B42, GSMaP_GAUGE, CMORPH_SUN, and MSWEP outperformed the other products. In general, the Precipitation Estimation from Remotely Sensed Information using Artificial Neural Networks-Cloud Classification System (PERSIANN_CCS) has poor performance in basins of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Most products overestimated the extreme indices of the 99th percentile of precipitation (R99), the maximal of daily precipitation in a year (Rmax), and the maximal of pentad accumulation of precipitation in a year (R5dmax). They were underestimated by the extreme index of the total number of days with daily precipitation less than 1 mm (dry day, DD). Compared to products blended with rain gauge data only, MSWEP blended with more data sources, and outperformed the other products. Therefore, multi-sources of blended precipitation should be the hotspot of regional and global precipitation research in the future.

The spatiotemporal pattern of precipitation is significantly changing with global climate change. Snowfall is a solid phase of precipitation and an important water resource. With two gridded data sets of APHRO (Asia Precipitation‐Highly‐Resolved Observational Data Integration Towards Evaluation of Water Resources) and CN05.1, this study analyses the changes in the spatiotemporal pattern of snowfall in a snow‐dominant region of China from 1961 to 2015. The results indicate the significant increasing trend of winter snowfall in horizontal and altitude dimension in snow‐dominant regions, but the winter snowing season length shortened. For the frequency of snowfall intensity level, light, and heavy snowfall and snowstorms increased, but moderate snowfall showed no change. However, the intensity of extreme snowfall in once‐in‐a‐century was decreasing in all of the snow‐dominant regions. In the altitude dimension, the increasing trend in snow‐dominant conditions was not uniform, which may be related to change in air temperature and water vapour through the vertical atmospheric levels. The upwards trend in snowfall may be caused by the increase of atmospheric water content rather than the change of snowy weather conditions. In addition, the change values of climate indices can also contribute to snowfall increasing in snow‐dominant regions.

High-resolution gridded 2 m air temperature datasets are important input data for global and regional climate change studies, agrohydrologic model simulations and numerical weather predictions, etc. In this study, the digital elevation model (DEM) is used to correct temperature forecasts produced by ECMWF. The multi-grid variation formulation method is then used to fuse the data from corrected temperature forecasts and ground automatic station observations. The fused dataset covers the area over (0–60°N, 70–140°S), where different underlying surfaces exist, such as plains, basins, plateaus, and mountains. The spatial and temporal resolutions are 1 km and 1 h, respectively. The comparison of the fusion data with the verification observations, including 2400 weather stations, indicates that the accuracy of the gridded temperature is superior to European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) data. This is because a more significant number of stations and high-resolution terrain data are used to generate the fusion data than are utilized in the ECMWF. The obtained dataset can describe the temperature feature of peaks and valleys more precisely. Due to its continuous temporal coverage and consistent quality, the fusion dataset is one of China’s most widely used temperature datasets. However, data uncertainty will increase for areas with sparse observations and high mountains, and we must be cautious when using data from these areas.
