This paper presents a comprehensive and generalized analysis of the bidirectional dual active bridge (DAB) dc-dc converter using triple phase shift (TPS) control to enable closed-loop power regulation while minimizing current stress. The key new achievements are a generic analysis in terms of possible conversion ratios/converter voltage gains (i.e., Buck/Boost/Unity), per unit based equations regardless of DAB ratings, and a new simple closed-loop controller implementable in real time to meet desired power transfer regulation at minimum current stress. Per unit based analytical expressions are derived for converter ac rms current as well as power transferred. An offline particle swarm optimization (PSO) method is used to obtain an extensive set of TPS ratios for minimizing the rms current in the entire bidirectional power range of -1 to 1 per unit. The extensive set of results achieved from PSO presents a generic data pool, which is carefully analyzed to derive simple useful relations. Such relations enable a generic closed-loop controller design that can be implemented in real time avoiding the extensive computational capacity that iterative optimization techniques require. A detailed Simulink DAB switching model is used to validate the precision of the proposed closed-loop controller under various operating conditions. An experimental prototype also substantiates the results achieved.

Several papers have been published recently on TPS control of dual active bridge (DAB) converter, however, no complete study of the converter operation behaviour exists, that takes into account all switching modes in both charging and discharging (bidirectional) power transfer. In this paper, six switching modes and their complements with opposite power transfer direction are defined with their operational constraints. Exact expressions for power transferred are derived with no fundamental frequency assumptions and range of power transfer for each mode is also defined to characterize mode limitations. Detailed constraints for zero voltage switching (ZVS) are also obtained. A new definition for converter reactive power consumption is introduced. This is based on calculation of inductor apparent power which avoids fundamental frequency approximations as well as the vague negative (back flowing) power definitions in recent papers. All known DAB phase shift modulation techniques including conventional, dual and extended phase shift, represent special cases from triple phase shift, therefore the presented analysis provides a generalised theory for all phase shift based modulation techniques.

This article proposes a new active power flow controller for dc–dc multiactive bridge (MAB) converters with minimum current point tracking (MCPT) to minimize conductive losses. Unlike recent efforts in this area, the proposed controller does not require look-up table for implementation nor complex nonlinear converter modeling and is not circuit parameter dependent. The proposed control scheme is also generalized for MAB converters with any number of ports and is derived in per unit form to enable standard implementation for buck/boost/unity-gain operating modes. The proposed MCPT algorithm is based on an innovative adaptive perturb and observe tracking of the minimum current point (MCP) on the MAB converter current characteristic plane. This MCP is tracked while active power regulation is simultaneously achieved based on a new phase shift decoupler to enable direct regulation of individual port active power. Detailed design procedure of the proposed controller is presented and extensive simulation is carried out to validate the effectiveness of the proposed MCPT closed loop controller. Experimental implementation is also provided to substantiate the simulation results.

Three-phase converters based on insulated-gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) are widely used in various industrial applications. Faults in IGBTs can significantly affect the operation and safety of the power electronic equipment and loads. It is critical to accurately detect power inverter faults as soon as they occur to ensure system availability and high-power quality. This study provides a novel integration of signal and data-driven fault-diagnosis approaches for detecting open-circuit switch faults in three-phase inverters. The proposed technique uses the average root-mean-square (RMS) ratio of the phase current as the key extraction feature. This feature can be used to estimate the fault types and faulty switches (es) irrespective of changes in the running load. Ensemble-bagged machine learning classification was used to accurately predict the faulty switch of the inverter. The results demonstrate the ability of the proposed fault diagnosis technique to identify single-, double-, and triple-switch fault (s). The experimental results also attested to the simulation of multiple fault diagnosis. A unique feature of this technique is its ability to estimate faulty switches under various inverter-operating conditions.

This paper proposes a multiport DC-DC converter for EV fast-charging stations. The proposed converter is comprised of Ring-Connected Dual Active Bridge (RCDAB) DC-DC converters, where the connection point between every two adjacent DABs provides a DC port. Bypass switches are added to each DAB to eliminate unnecessary power processing stages in the event of idle ports (no EVs) (open circuit ports). The nature of the ring connection of the RCDAB theoretically allows infinite internal power flow solutions within the ring to satisfy a certain power flow scenario at the DC ports, hence, the optimal power flow solution can be selected to minimize total RMS current and losses. Single-phase shift control is applied to this optimization problem to make it simple. A novel closed-loop control scheme using Bisection optimization is developed to minimize the total RMS current. A control-hardware-in-the-loop (CHiL) validation is carried out for a 5-port network of the proposed topology to investigate the converter efficiency and fault tolerance/availability characteristics. Also, an experimental hardware validation is implemented for a 3-port network where different scenarios for power flow and faults are performed. Finally, a comparative discussion between the proposed topology and other multiport topologies in literature is presented revealing the superior performance of the RCDAB topology.

Reactive power flow increases dual active bridge (DAB) converter RMS current leading to an increase in conduction losses especially in high power applications. This paper proposes a new optimized triple phase shift (TPS) switching algorithm that minimizes the total reactive power of the converter. The algorithm iteratively searches for TPS control variables that satisfy the desired active power flow while selecting the operating mode with minimum reactive power consumption. This is valid for the whole range of converter operation. The iterative algorithm is run offline for the entire active power range (-1pu to 1pu) and the resulting data is used to train an open loop artificial neural network controller to reduce computational time and memory allocation necessary to store the data generated. To validate the accuracy of the proposed controller, a 500-MW 300kV/100kV DAB model is simulated in Matlab/Simulink, as a potential application for DAB in DC grids.
