COVID-19 outbreak has put the whole world in an unprecedented difficult situation bringing life around the world to a frightening halt and claiming thousands of lives. Due to COVID-19’s spread in 212 countries and territories and increasing numbers of infected cases and death tolls mounting to 5,212,172 and 334,915 (as of May 22 2020), it remains a real threat to the public health system. This paper renders a response to combat the virus through Artificial Intelligence (AI). Some Deep Learning (DL) methods have been illustrated to reach this goal, including Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), Extreme Learning Machine (ELM), and Long/Short Term Memory (LSTM). It delineates an integrated bioinformatics approach in which different aspects of information from a continuum of structured and unstructured data sources are put together to form the user-friendly platforms for physicians and researchers. The main advantage of these AI-based platforms is to accelerate the process of diagnosis and treatment of the COVID-19 disease. The most recent related publications and medical reports were investigated with the purpose of choosing inputs and targets of the network that could facilitate reaching a reliable Artificial Neural Network-based tool for challenges associated with COVID-19. Furthermore, there are some specific inputs for each platform, including various forms of the data, such as clinical data and medical imaging which can improve the performance of the introduced approaches toward the best responses in practical applications.

This paper presents an efficient particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm developed to design a near-field time delay equalizer metasurface (TDEM) for the purpose of improving directivity and radiation patterns of classical electromagnetic band gap resonator antennas (ERAs). Triple layers of conductive printed patterns in the metasurface were optimized by the PSO algorithm to systematically design the TDEM. Predicted and measured results show a significant improvement in antenna performance including 9.6 dB enhancement in antenna directivity, lower side lobes and higher gain. The measured directivity of the prototype is 21 dBi and 3 dB bandwidth is 11.8%.

A novel technique to design a low-cost frequency-selective surface (FSS) bandpass filter is presented in this article. Wideband polarization-independent FSS bandpass filters are predominantly made of multiple microwave dielectric substrates or noncommercially available composite materials with or without active components, contributing to a very high manufacturing cost. The presented FSS filter has neither microwave substrates, nor any active devices, while it has a large controllable operational frequency band, which can support all polarizations, due to its symmetrical configuration. To the best of our knowledge, such a polarization-independent wideband bandpass response has never been achieved by any low-cost fully metallic FSS filter. The proposed FSS filter is made of three thin metal sheets composed of an engineered metallic substrate (EMS) and a metallic orthogonal dipole resonator (ODR). The EMS is responsible for ensuring the mechanical integrity of the filter without imposing electromagnetic (EM) restrictions throughout the desired frequency band. The integration of EMS and ODRs realizes a fully controllable wideband bandpass verified thorough circuital and modal analyses. According to the predicted and measured results, the FSS filter has a large bandwidth of around 31%, extending from 8.76 to 11.96 GHz with sharp roll-offs for the normal incidence. Simulated and measured results show a low sensitivity of the FSS filter response to oblique angles of incidence for both TM and TE polarizations.

A simple conformal ultrawideband (UWB) antenna with monopole-like radiation patterns is proposed in this communication. To achieve the wide bandwidth, two rings are arranged concentrically around the main annular-ring circular patch antenna, in which two rectangular slots are added. The antenna has monopole-like radiation patterns generated by combining four propagation modes of TM 01 , TM 02 , TM 03 , and TM 04 throughout the operating bands. To enhance the flexibility and robustness, the proposed antenna is fabricated using conductive fabric embedded into polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) polymer. To our knowledge, this is the first flexible UWB antenna with monopole-like radiation patterns reported in the open literature. The measured results show that the antenna achieves a 10 dB return loss bandwidth from 2.85 to 8.6 GHz. Monopole-like radiation patterns are maintained throughout the frequency band, agreeing well with simulated results. This has been validated through the measured mean realized gain (MRG) pattern from 2.85 to 8.6 GHz. The fabricated antenna was bent and tested at various curvatures to verify its conformability. To evaluate suitability for UWB communications, the system-fidelity factors of the antenna are investigated using full-wave analysis in CST Microwave Studio, in both flat and bent conditions, validating its potential for UWB pulse transmission.

This paper presents an elegant yet straightforward design procedure for a compact rat-race coupler (RRC) with an extended harmonic suppression. The coupler’s conventional $\lambda $ /4 transmission lines (TLs) are replaced by a specialized TL that offers significant size reduction and harmonic elimination capabilities in the proposed approach. The design procedure is verified through the theoretical, circuit, and electromagnetic (EM) analyses, showing excellent agreement among different analyses and the measured results. The circuit and EM results show that the proposed TL replicates the same frequency behaviour of the conventional one at the design frequency of 1.8 GHz while enables harmonic suppression up to the $7^{\mathrm {th}}$ harmonic and a size reduction of 74%. According to the measured results, the RRC has a fractional bandwidth of 20%, with input insertion losses of around 0.2 dB and isolation level better than 35 dB. Furthermore, the total footprint of the proposed RRC is only 31.7 mm $\times15.9$ mm, corresponding to $0.28\,\,\lambda \times 0.14\,\,\lambda $ , where $\lambda $ is the guided wavelength at 1.8 GHz.

Electromagnetic (EM) metasurfaces are essential in a wide range of EM engineering applications, from incorporated into antenna designs to separate devices like radome. Near-field manipulators are a class of metasurfaces engineered to tailor an EM source’s radiation patterns by manipulating its near-field components. They can be made of all-dielectric, hybrid, or all-metal materials; however, simultaneously delivering a set of desired specifications by an all-metal structure is more challenging due to limitations of a substrate-less configuration. The existing near-field phase manipulators have at least one of the following limitations; expensive dielectric-based prototyping, subject to ray tracing approximation and conditions, narrowband performance, costly manufacturing, and polarization dependence. In contrast, we propose an all-metal wideband phase correcting structure (AWPCS) with none of these limitations and is designed based on the relative phase error extracted by post-processing the actual near-field distributions of any EM sources. Hence, it is applicable to any antennas, including those that cannot be accurately analyzed with ray-tracing, particularly for near-field analysis. To experimentally verify the wideband performance of the AWPCS, a shortened horn antenna with a large apex angle and a non-uniform near-field phase distribution is used as an EM source for the AWPCS. The measured results verify a significant improvement in the antenna’s aperture phase distribution in a large frequency band of 25%.
