In this paper, orthogonal experiments are designed to study the sintering and smelting characteristics of the ludwigite ore. The predominant influencing factors of the optimal ratio, basicity and carbon content on different single sintering indexes, including the vertical sintering speed, yield rate, drum strength and low-temperature reduction pulverization index, are firstly explored by the range analysis method, and the main influencing factors on comprehensive indexes are obtained by a weighted scoring method based on different single index investigation. Considering the sintering characteristics, the primary and secondary influencing factors are: ordinary ore ratio, carbon content and basicity, and the optimal ore blending scheme is: basicity 1.7, ordinary ore blending ratio 60% and carbon content 5%. In terms of the smelting characteristics, the research obtains the order of the influencing factors on the softening start temperature, softening end temperature, softening zone, smelting start temperature, dripping temperature, smelting-dripping zone, maximum pressure difference and gas permeability index of the ludwigite sinters by simply considering various single smelting indexes. On this basis, considering the comprehensive softening-melting-dripping characteristics, the primary and secondary influencing factors are: carbon content, ordinary ore ratio and basicity, and the optimal ore blending scheme is: basicity 1.9, ordinary ore blending ratio 60% and a carbon content of 5.5%. Comprehensively, considering the sintering and smelting property of the ludwigite ore, the primary and secondary influencing factors are: carbon content, ordinary ore ratio and basicity, and the optimal ore blending scheme is: basicity 1.9, ordinary ore blending ratio 60% and a carbon content of 5.5%.

A novel smelting reduction process called pre-reduction in rotary kiln and total oxygen melting pool is a promising route to reduce environmental pollution from the ironmaking industry. In this paper, the process parameters and appropriate efficiency of reduction in the pre-reduction process of the rotary kiln were investigated via the detection of the metallization rate, phase composition, and internal morphology of the product combining with the analysis of the off-gas. The results indicated that the parameters of reduction temperature, reduction holding time, and coal ratio have a remarkable influence on the metallization rate. The reduction temperature has the most significant effect, followed by the reduction time and the coal ratio. Furthermore, under the condition of reduction temperature 1000 °C, holding time 30 min, coal ratio = 1, a product with a metallization rate of more than 70% can be obtained, which meets the requirements of the rotary kiln process, and its CO2/CO value of the pre-reduction endpoint is appropriate. Continue to increase the temperature, holding time, and coal ratio can raise the metallization rate of the pellets, but only a little improvement and may cause reoxidation of the product.

In recent years, a low-grade vanadiferous titanomagnetite concentrate (LVTC) produced in the northwest area of Liaoning has attracted more and more attention. However, it is difficult to recover and utilize valuable minerals such as iron, titanium, and vanadium, due to their special physical and chemical properties and complex mineral composition. Grinding and magnetic separation are two important operational units for recovering valuable metal components from vanadiferous titanomagnetite. Therefore, the grinding kinetics of the LVTC in northwestern Liaoning were first studied by means of grinding kinetics equations in this paper. The results show that the grinding process of LVTC is consistent with the grinding kinetics equation, and the sieve residues of particles approached a constant value after grinding for 30 min, resulting from equilibrium between the fragmentation and agglomeration processes. In addition, equivalent particle size (EPS) and specific surface area (SSA) were linearly proportional to the double logarithm of grinding time, and the correlation coefficients for fitted data by the Rosin–Rammler–Bennet (RRB) model were slightly higher than those by the Swebrec model, and could reflect the dispersibility and uniformity of particle size distribution (PSD) quantitatively. Then, the grinding products were separated by magnetic separation, and the influence of grinding conditions on the grade and recovery ratio of Fe and TiO2 in the LVTC was analyzed. As a result, grinding time has a significant impact on the recovery ratio and grade of Fe and TiO2 during the magnetic separation process, and the LVTC grinding duration is not as prolonged as it might be, as the optimal grinding time is 20 min. Titanomagnetite, ilmenite, and titanite are still the predominant phases in all magnetic separation products at optimal grinding time, but the intensity or content of these three minerals varies between magnetic separation products, and 232 kA/m magnetic field intensity has a higher separation efficiency than 134 kA/m magnetic field intensity.

Through thermodynamic smelting experiments, nonisothermal and isothermal kinetics experiments, the effects of CO2–containing gas injection on the smelting of chromia–bearing vanadiferous titanomagnetite ore were investigated. The experiments at 900 °C, 1000 °C, 1100 °C, 1200 °C, and 1300 °C, and CO2 concentration of 0, 10 vol.%, 20 vol.%, and 30 vol.% were studied. The samples after the kinetics experiments were analyzed through thermodynamic calculations and characterized by XRD, XRF, XPS, and SEM. The results of thermodynamic experiments show that the injection of CO2–containing gas significantly improves the softening–melting–dripping behavior during the smelting process. As the concentration of injected CO2 increased from 0 vol.% to 30 vol.%, the range of softening temperature [T40–T4] decreased from 109 °C to 97 °C, and the range of droplet temperature [Td–Ts] decreased rapidly from 196 °C to 162 °C. Moreover, when CO2 concentration was 20 vol.%, the minimum apparent activation energy of nonisothermal kinetics reached 75.58 kJ·mol−1. Combining the lowest permeability index and the fastest nonisothermal reduction rate, the optimal CO2 concentration in the fuel gas was considered to be 20 vol.%. The isothermal parameters were fitted according to 1 − (1 − α)1/3 − t (CG3 model), and the apparent activation energy was 121.93 kJ·mol−1 (less than 150 kJ·mol−1), which means that the restrictive step of the polymetallic reaction is mainly determined by diffusion. Finally, thermodynamic calculations and characterizations show that CO2–containing gas injection helps titanium stabilize in a higher valence state, which is conducive to improve the high–temperature characteristics of titanium–containing slag.

Vanadium titanomagnetite is an important mineral resource. It is a raw material for ironmaking, vanadium extraction, strategic metal titanium production, and titanium dioxide production. In this study, high chromium vanadium titanomagnetite (High-Cr VTM) and ordinary iron ore were used as raw materials for pelletizing. The effect of V2O5 on the preparation and properties of High-Cr VTM pellets was studied. The influence of V2O5 on the properties of the green pellets, the compressive strength of oxidized pellets, the reduction swelling index and reduction degree, softening-melting behavior, and the migration law of Fe, Ti, and Cr in the reduction process were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results show that with the increase in V2O5 content, the properties of the green pellets basically showed a trend of first decreasing and then increasing but all met the basic requirements of pelletizing. When the added amount of V2O5 in the pellet was 6%, the compressive strength of the oxidized pellet was the lowest at only 2565 N/pellet but it still met the quality requirements for pellets in blast furnace production. As the dosage of V2O5 increased, the reduction swelling index and reduction degree of the pellets showed a trend of first increasing and then decreasing. The addition of V2O5 can increase the softening initial temperature, softening final temperature, melting start temperature, and dripping temperature of the High-Cr VTM pellets, narrowing the softening interval, and expanding the melting dripping interval. The experimental results provided a data reference for revealing the influence of V2O5 on High-Cr VTM pellets during the blast furnace smelting process.
