As traffic lifelines of modern cities, subways are being rapidly developed in China. With this development, an increasing number of subway interchange stations will be built at deep soft soil areas. Because of the absence of data on the effects of pit construction on existing subway stations, no theory is available to predict deformation of a subway station caused by adjacent pit construction. The proposed Line 10 subway station intersects with the operating Line 4 subway station at Hailun Road, Shanghai, China, where the underlying stratum is composed of several different sandy-silt layers and two confined aquifers. The double-layered confined water meets at the south end well of the proposed subway station. With such complicated hydrogeological conditions, the development of technology that can control the effects of groundwater and guarantee the safe operation of Line 4 during pit construction is essential. In this article, the effects of dewatering and pit excavation on the Line 4 subway stati...

The seismic performance of a two-story building was investigated through a small-scaled quasi-static test. The test results show that the bolt-assembled PC panel building system can present reliable structural integrity, including transferring shear action and performing deformation ability. Based on the results, the failure mode and force-transfer mechanisms of the system were discussed and a modified design model was proposed to calculate the resistant capacity of bolt joints based on the current design code. The paper pointed out that the drift limits suggested in the current code may not suitable for evaluating the damage state of the system.

Due to poor geologic conditions, unreasonable design principles, or construction method, many quality defects often occur during prestressed pipe piles’ field construction, which will greatly influence pipe piles’ normal service or result in engineering accident. To acquire some treatment measures of the defective pipe piles, we have carried out some theoretical researches on this type of pipe pile. First, the types of defective prestressed pipe piles were summarized. Then, we explored the force and deformation characteristics of the defective pipe piles and brought forward the relationship between pile-top displacement and residual bearing capacity. Finally, we offered some treatment measures for the defective pipe piles. The results show that the main performance of the defective prestressed pipe piles includes pile deviation, incline, and breakage. The residual bearing capacity of the incline pipe piles is less than half of the designed bearing capacity, and the top displacement of the incline pipe pile is positively correlated with the square of the sliding depth. Some treatment measures such as foundation adjustment, adding piles, splicing pile, and filling core can improve defective pipe piles. The research results can provide some references for similar engineering.

Chinese traditional poetry, a special language art, is also consistent with “There are a thousand Hamlets in a thousand people’s eyes”. Most research subjectively analyzes the teaching and learning of Chinese traditional poetry, but few adopt the methods of natural science to explore the mental process of Chinese traditional poetry learning. This paper first explores the individual differences in reading Chinese traditional poetry by hidden Markov models. Here, we use eye-tracking to obtain visual attention during reading. The experimental results show there are temporary and spatial feature differences when different prior knowledge people read Chinese traditional poetry. This study might contribute to constructing the learning theory of Chinese traditional poetry.

The transmitting boundary (TB) is very important for seismic analysis of the structure-foundation. In this paper, the transmitting boundary in the finite element model for seismic analysis of the structure-foundation is studied. First, the modified viscous boundary is developed to address the non-plane wave behavior of the structure-foundation. Then, the seismic analysis of the model for the structure-foundation is formulated, where a potential earthquake is defined by the incoming waves, and the truncated boundary is imposed with the transmitting boundary conditions. Further, the tied boundary model and the transmitting-layer boundary model are set up to address the radiated waves in the model of the structure-foundation. Finally, the transmitting-layer boundary model has been extended for the structure-foundation subject to obliquely and horizontally incoming seismic waves. In comparison with the various schemes of TBs, the proposed transmitting boundaries have advantages of efficiency, convenience and versatility. The research is of great significance for the dynamic response analysis of structural-foundation.
