The objective of this study was to examine the effectiveness of resveratrol in lowering blood glucose in the presence of standard antidiabetic treatment in patients with type 2 diabetes, in a randomized placebo-controlled double-blinded parallel clinical trial. A total of 66 subjects with type 2 diabetes were enrolled in this study and randomly assigned to intervention group which was supplemented with resveratrol at a dose 1 g/day for 45 days and control group which received placebo tablets. Body weight, blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, haemoglobin A1c, insulin, homeostatic assessments for insulin resistance, triglycerides, total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein, high density lipoprotein, and markers of liver and kidney damage were measured at baseline and after 45 days of resveratrol or placebo supplementation. Resveratrol treatment significantly decreased systolic blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, haemoglobin A1c, insulin, and insulin resistance, while HDL was significantly increased, when compared to their baseline levels. On the other hand, the placebo group had slightly increased fasting glucose and LDL when compared to their baseline levels. Liver and kidney function markers were unchanged in the intervention group. Overall, this study showed that resveratrol supplementation exerted strong antidiabetic effects in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Serum uric acid (UA) is a strong endogenous antioxidant. Since oxidative stress has been linked to osteoporosis, we examined the association between serum UA levels and bone mineral density (BMD), prevalent vertebral and nonvertebral fractures, and laboratory measures such as calcitropic hormones and bone turnover marker levels. This cross‐sectional analysis consisted of 1705 community‐dwelling men aged 70 years or over who participated in the baseline part of the Concord Health and Ageing in Men Project (CHAMP), a population‐based study of older men in Sydney, Australia. BMD at all sites was significantly higher among men with serum UA levels above the group median than among men with UA levels below the median. In multiple regression analyses adjusted for potential confounders, serum UA remained associated with BMD at all sites (β = 0.12 to 0.14, p < .001), serum calcium (β = 0.11, p = .001), parathyroid hormone (β = 0.09, p = .002), 25‐hydroxyvitamin D (β = 0.09, p = .005), and was negatively associated with urinary excretion amino‐terminal cross‐linked telopeptide of type 1 collagen (β = –0.09, p = .006). Overall, serum UA accounted for 1.0% to 1.44% of the variances in BMD (R2 = 0.10 to 0.22). In multiple logistic regression analyses, above‐median serum UA levels were associated with a lower prevalence of osteoporosis at the femoral neck [odds ratio (OR) = 0.42, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.22–0.81, p = .010) and lumbar spine (OR = 0.44, 95% CI 0.23–0.86, p = .016) and a lower prevalence of vertebral (OR = 0.62, 95% CI 0.43–0.91, p = .015) and nonvertebral (OR = 0.51, 95% CI 0.29–0.89, p = .018) fractures. In conclusion, higher serum UA levels are associated with higher BMD at all skeletal sites and with a lower prevalence of vertebral and nonvertebral fractures in older men. © 2011 American Society for Bone and Mineral Research.

Cigarette butts are the most common form of litter in the marine environment and represent potential point sources for environmental contamination. The metals leached from cigarette butts have not been studied well in the marine environment. In this study, the levels of metals (Cd, Fe, As, Ni, Cu, Zn and Mn) in cigarette butts were monitored at nine stations along the northern part of the Persian Gulf in Bushehr coastal areas in summer 2015 with a sampling time interval of 10 days. The Cd, Fe, As, Ni, Cu, Zn and Mn contents of cigarette butts were found to vary widely between 0.16 and 0.67 μg/g, 79.01 and 244.97 μg/g, 0.12 and 0.48 μg/g, 1.13 and 3.27 μg/g, 4.29 and 12.29 μg/g, 6.39 and 21.17 μg/g, and 38.29 and 123.1 μg/g, respectively. A Wilcoxon signed rank test showed that there were no significant differences between the Cd, Fe, As, Ni, Cu, Zn and Mn contents of cigarette butts at different sampling times. Considering the estimated number of cigarette butts littered annually, the results of this study indicated that considerable metals including Cd, Fe, As, Ni, Cu, Zn and Mn may enter the marine environment each year from cigarette litter alone.

Introduction Musculoskeletal disorders and cognitive diseases are prevalent, and they are significant determinants of morbidity and mortality in older adults. The aim of this study is to investigate the prevalence of musculoskeletal and cognitive diseases and their risk factors and also to assess their associations during future follow-ups. Methods and analysis Bushehr Elderly Health (BEH) programme is a population-based prospective cohort study being conducted in Bushehr, a southern province of Iran. A total of 3000 older people aged ≥60 years participated in the first stage from which 2772 were eligible to participate in the second stage, which started after 2.5 years. Data including demographic status, lifestyle factors, general healthandmedical history, and mentalandfunctional health are collected through a questionnaire. Anthropometric measures, performance testsandmuscle strength, blood pressure and and body composition measurements are done. A total 25 cc venous blood is taken, and sera are stored at –80°C for possible future analyses. Ethics and dissemination The study protocol was approved by the ethics committee of Endocrinology and Metabolism Research Institute, affiliated to Tehran University of Medical Science as well as the Research Ethics Committee of Bushehr University of Medical Sciences. A written informed consent was signed by all the participants. The study findings will show the prevalence of musculoskeletal disease, cognitive impairment and their risk factors in an elderly population. The participants will be followed during the study to measure the occurrence outcomes. This study will also have the potential to inform the development of beneficial interventions to improve the management of musculoskeletal and cognitive impairment in Iran and other countries in the Middle East. Our findings will be disseminated via scientific publication as well as presentation to stakeholders, including the patients, clinicians, the public and policymakers, via appropriate avenues.
