Polyurethanes are of undoubted interest for the scientific community and the industry. Their outstanding versatility from tailor-made structures turns them into major polymers for use in a wide range of different applications. As with other polymers, new, emerging molecules and monomers with specific attributes can provide new functions and capabilities to polyurethanes. Natural and synthetic coumarin and its derivatives are characterised by interesting biological, photophysical and photochemical properties. Then, the polyurethanes can exploit those features of many coumarins which are present in their composition to achieve new functions and performances. This article reviews the developments in the proper use of the special properties of coumarins in polyurethanes to produce functional and smart materials that can be suitable for new specific applications.

The current concerns of both society and the materials industries about the environmental impact of thermoset composites, as well as new legislation, have led the scientific sector to search for more sustainable alternatives to reduce the environmental impact of thermoset composites. Until now, to a large extent, sustainable reinforcements have been used to manufacture more sustainable composites and thus contribute to the reduction of pollutants. However, in recent years, new alternatives have been developed, such as thermosetting resins with bio-based content and/or systems such as recyclable amines and vitrimers that enable recycling/reuse. Throughout this review, some new bio-based thermoset systems as well as new recyclable systems and sustainable reinforcements are described, and a brief overview of the biocomposites market and its impact is shown. By way of conclusion, it should be noted that although significant improvements have been achieved, other alternatives ought to be researched.

A series of coumarin-containing branched polyurethanes based on polycaprolactones, hexamethylene diisocyanate and a monohydroxylated coumarin monomer with 5 and 10% content by weight of coumarin units were successfully prepared. Chain architecture was controlled by combination of polycaprolactone (PCL) triol or tetrol with PCL diol. Terminal coumarin units segregated from the polyurethane matrix as measured by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Photo-dimerization with 313 nm lamps presented an anomalous behavior in two steps with high irreversibility at high conversions. Photo-dimerization/photo-cleavage reactions showed an increase in irreversibility with the increase in cycles. It was demonstrated that conversion measured by Raman spectroscopy gave the same results than conversion measured by ultraviolet (UV) spectroscopy. Photo-dimerization produced an elastomeric material with much better mechanical properties than non-irradiated material as a consequence of the crosslinking produced. Photo-cleavage decreased the mechanical properties and repeated photo-dimerization increased mechanical properties again

Coumarin derivatives are a class of compounds with a pronounced wide range of applications, especially in biological activities, in the medicine, pharmacology, cosmetics, coatings and food industry. Their potential applications are highly dependent on the nature of the substituents attached to their nucleus. These substituents modulate their photochemical and photophysical properties, as well as their interactions in their crystalline form, which largely determines the final field of application. Therefore, in this work a series of mono and dihydroxylated coumarin derivatives with different chemical substituents were synthesized and characterized by UV-Visible spectroscopy, thermal analysis (differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and TGA), 1H NMR and X-Ray Diffraction to identify limitations and possibilities as a function of the molecular structure for expanding their applications in polymer science.
