The increasing demand of stakeholders for information on sustainability, the effects of the recent financial crisis and the role of the financial sector in sustainable development have compelled many banking institutions to provide sustainable disclosures in line with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of Agenda 2030. The purpose of this study is to examine the materiality of the banking sector disclosures. The materiality implies the identification of economic, social and environmental issues that are relevant to the organization itself but also to stakeholders. Thus, an SDG Materiality Analysis Framework (SDGs_MAF) has been developed and applied on a sample of 37 European banking institutions. This framework is based on the SDGs and scoring/benchmarking techniques to analyze the content of sustainability reports. The results show the high priority of the banking sector for SDGs regarding the promotion of economic growth and decent work, the promotion of fairness and transparent processes at all levels. In addition, it is pointed out that the rather low alignment of materiality issues with SDGs oriented to environmental matters, as well as several managerial implications in relation to its strategic planning and the communicating of sustainability disclosures.

The existence of parks is particularly important and offers many benefits both to the environment and to humans. Parks are recreational spaces, which contribute to the improvement of the microclimate, reduce atmospheric pollution and protect biodiversity. Their importance for the urban environment is even greater because they offer pure oxygen to the city and people feel close to nature in them. The aim of this study is to review studies which took place globally as well as in Greece, relying on the Contingent Valuation Method (CVM) for parks. The reason that this method is used is the valuation of non-market goods and services through the development of a hypothetical market. Additionally, a distinction is made among previous empirical studies depending on the nature of the parks and the country where the survey was conducted, while the disadvantages that must be considered from the use of Contingent Valuation Method are mentioned. According to the findings of the literature review, studies using Contingent Valuation in Greece, particularly in the case of urban parks, are limited. As far as we know, the valuation of existing urban parks has not yet been studied, so this could be a field for further research. The economic valuation of parks in a country like Greece, which suffered with the financial crisis, can lead to conclusions about the value that citizens attribute to parks and the identification of possible protest responses.

Urban parks are of great importance for the sustainability in the cities. The multiple influences that the parks and green spaces offer both to humans and to the environment have been widely recognized in the literature and include the physical and mental health of citizens. The urban parks are oxygen sources for cities, they make people feel close to nature, they contribute to the reduction of anxiety and they also offer many activities to the people. The impact of green spaces is of vital importance as they contribute to the reduction of temperature and they offer a cool environment improving the microclimate this way. The purpose of this study is to estimate the value that people attribute to urban parks applying the Contingent Valuation Method (CVM). This value is estimated through urban park visitors' willingness to pay a hypothetical entrance ticket. For the purpose of our study, a survey was conducted to visitors of the Niarchos Park in Attica, Greece from July of 2018 to February of 2019. Subsequently, the empirical analysis is based on regression models. The demographic characteristics, such as the age, the educational level, the employment and the number of household members were found to be significant prognostic factors for people's willingness to pay or not in order to use the park, as also the importance that people give to green spaces. The visitors' expenses for the park visit were also taken into consideration and they are statistically important. The differentiation that may exist between a hypothetical scenario which is presented to the park's visitors and of a real situation should be taken into account.

The paper aims to describe which barriers are encountered within the hotel sector with regards to implementing the use of renewable energy sources (RES) taking into account their expenses on energy as well as annual profits. The empirical analysis is based on binary logistic regression models employing data that influence hoteliers’ decision for investing in RES. Results support that hoteliers consider economic, institutional and human-related factors as barriers for investing on RES. Policy-makers should consider that perceived barriers towards adopting RES differ between hotels with differing financial and energy performances. These variations are very important to consider in order to effectively address the barriers preventing the diffusion of renewable energy sources so as to reduce the impact of the hotel industry in environmental degradation attributed to energy consumption.

This study’s aim is mainly to provide insights into the factors that affect sustainable tourism entrepreneurs’ behavioural intentions, employing data from Greece. Given that intention is a powerful predictor of actual behaviour, to stimulate sustainable entrepreneurial activity in the tourism sector and achieve sustainable development, it is important to study the factors that affect entrepreneur’s behavioural intentions towards sustainability. Findings through this empirical analysis support that entrepreneur’s demographics parameters and firm characteristics have distinctive effects in explaining respondents’ behaviour towards sustainable entrepreneurship and acknowledgement of sustainability options of a community. In particular, results suggest that younger entrepreneurs are probably more informed about the potential of the sustainability for the regions and are more likely to favour sustainable tourism practices. Entrepreneur’s income is also a statistical significant parameter towards sustainable entrepreneurship intentions within the tourism sector. Finally, entrepreneurs reported as important for the promotion of tourism sustainability the creation of knowledge networks and websites to focus on sustainable business and the promotion of environmental labels and certified management systems in tourism businesses.

Cultural heritage is recognised as an important asset for local development. The present study provides insights into the factors determining the residents’ perspective on the contribution of cultural assets to the local development of Sikyon. The theoretical analysis is based on the cultural and socioeconomic characteristics of the Sikyon area and the prospects of cultural and economic development through cultural tourism. The empirical analysis is based on descriptive statistical analyses and the estimation of regression models, employing data from 200 residents of Sikyon, from January 2012 to March 2012. The empirical results suggest the importance of the educational attainment of the residents with regard to culturally based local development. Statistical analysis also highlights the importance of economic incentives on the willingness to accept tourism expansion in an area with a rich cultural heritage. This study also shows the importance of information dissemination in promoting cultural tourism. Finally, results confirm that residents view cultural tourism as a means of improving the economic and cultural sustainability of a local community.

The purpose of this paper was to compose the profile of active consumers in Greece during a period of rising prices taking into account shifts in their consumption. A survey was conducted from 1 September 2008 to 21 November 2008 to collect the primary data source for the study. Questionnaires were administered to 200 consumers. To our knowledge this was the first attempt to offer insight into the characteristics of the Greek consumer in a period of economic crisis. For this purpose, econometric analysis was employed. Empirical results suggested that high‐income groups spend more for food commodities and are less likely to be active consumers. It was concluded that consumers have reduced spending for some basic and semi‐luxury products like fruits, meat, alcohol, sweets and coffee, and entertainment activities. The main factor which affected the reaction to price increases, as expected, was the monthly private income. Twenty per cent of the consumers are members of a national consumer movement organization, and support their actions against rising prices. Women, who research the market before purchasing a product, are more likely than men to participate in economic boycotts. By examining the profile of non‐active consumers and the reasons for their behaviour, we are able to propose a policy for the activation of the Greek consumer movement, which is necessary for the consumers' resistance to rising prices. Taking into consideration that Greek consumers face increased prices for food commodities and services, a policy framework to activate consumers is among the main prerequisites for maintaining consumers' well being. We suggest that the Greek Consumer Protection Institutes should regain consumers' confidence and focus on the dissemination of information about organized economic boycotts.

This paper sets out to investigate the main determinants of industrial decision-making process with respect to energy efficiency investments. Based on a survey among Greek industries, in the empirical analysis probit models are employed. The results support that an energy saving campaign should regard industries as subgroups with different needs and different managerial aspects. The importance of qualified employees is also established from this survey. An energy conservation framework would be more effective if the diffusion of information with regard to industrial energy saving investments is based on investment in human capital.

This paper develops an empirical model to investigate the main determinants of household energy conservation patterns in Greece employing cross-section data. In the empirical analysis, household energy-conserving choices models are employed, using a discrete and a latent trait variable respectively as a dependent variable. The results show that socio-economic variables such as consumers’ income and family size are suitable to explain differences towards energy conservation preferences. In addition, the results suggest that electricity expenditures and age of the respondent are negatively associated with the number of energy-conserving actions that a consumer is willing to adopt. Finally, other variables such as environmental information feedback and consciousness of energy problems are characteristics of the energy-saver consumer. By evaluating consumer's decision-making process with regards to energy conservation measures, we are able to formulate and propose an effective energy conservation framework for Greece. An energy policy framework is among the main prerequisites not only to achieve sustainable development but also to maintain consumers’ quality of life.
