Thermal conductivity of three high purity synthetic single crystalline diamonds has been measured with high accuracy at temperatures from 6 to 410 K. The crystals grown by chemical vapor deposition and by high-pressure high-temperature technique demonstrate almost identical temperature dependencies κ(T) and high values of thermal conductivity, up to 24 Wcm−1K−1 at room temperature. At conductivity maximum near 63 K, the magnitude of thermal conductivity reaches 285 Wcm−1K−1, the highest value ever measured for diamonds with the natural carbon isotope composition. Experimental data were fitted with the classical Callaway model for the lattice thermal conductivity. A set of expressions for the anharmonic phonon scattering processes (normal and umklapp) has been proposed which gives an excellent fit to the experimental κ(T) data over almost the whole temperature range explored. The model provides the strong isotope effect, nearly 45%, and the high thermal conductivity (>24 Wcm−1K−1) for the defect-free diamond with the natural isotopic abundance at room temperature.

Thermal conductivity κ ( T ) of single crystal aluminum nitride grown by physical vapor transport has been measured at temperatures T from 5 to 410 K. The samples exhibit high thermal conductivity with a value of up to 316 W m − 1 K − 1 at room temperature and about 2800 W m − 1 K − 1 at a peak of 66 K. At lowest temperatures, κ ( T ) approaches the conductivity limited by the diffuse phonon scattering from sample surfaces. The peculiarities in measured κ ( T ) suggest that the phonon scattering from point defects contributes essentially to the total phonon scattering in samples under investigation at low temperatures. The phonon interaction with electrons and holes bound to neutral donor and acceptor centers is suggested, adding substantially to thermal resistivity near and below the peak in κ ( T ) .

In this work, the substrate holders of three principal geometries (flat, pocket, and pedestal) were designed based on E-field simulations. They were fabricated and then tested in microwave plasma-assisted chemical vapor deposition process with the purpose of the homogeneous growth of 100-μm-thick, low-stress polycrystalline diamond film over 2-inch Si substrates with a thickness of 0.35 mm. The effectiveness of each holder design was estimated by the criteria of the PCD film quality, its homogeneity, stress, and the curvature of the resulting “diamond-on-Si” plates. The structure and phase composition of the synthesized samples were studied with scanning electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy, the curvature was measured using white light interferometry, and the thermal conductivity was measured using the laser flash technique. The proposed pedestal design of the substrate holder could reduce the stress of the thick PCD film down to 1.1–1.4 GPa, which resulted in an extremely low value of displacement for the resulting “diamond-on-Si” plate of Δh = 50 μm. The obtained results may be used for the improvement of already existing, and the design of the novel-type, MPCVD reactors aimed at the growth of large-area thick homogeneous PCD layers and plates for electronic applications.

A conformal metamaterial absorber with simultaneous optical transparency and broadband absorption is proposed in this paper. The absorptance above 90% over a wide frequency range of 5.3–15 GHz can be achieved through topology optimization combined with a genetic algorithm (GA). The broadband absorption can be kept at incident angles within 45° and 70° for TE mode and TM mode, respectively. In the meantime, by employing transparent substrates, including polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET), good optical transmittance and flexibility can be obtained simultaneously. The experimental results agree well with the numerical simulations, which further validates the reliability of our design and theoretical analysis. With its visible-wavelength transparency, flexibility, broadband absorption, low profile, excellent angle stability and polarization insensitivity, the proposed absorber is highly favored for practical applications in microwave engineering, such as electromagnetic interference and stealth technology. Moreover, the proposed design method of topology optimization can be extended to design the absorber quickly and efficiently, according to specific engineering requirements.
