The chemical interaction of Sn with H2 by X‐ray diffraction methods at pressures of 180–210 GPa is studied. A previously unknown tetrahydride SnH4 with a cubic structure (fcc) exhibiting superconducting properties below TC = 72 K is obtained; the formation of a high molecular C2/m‐SnH14 superhydride and several lower hydrides, fcc SnH2, and C2‐Sn12H18, is also detected. The temperature dependence of critical current density JC(T) in SnH4 yields the superconducting gap 2Δ(0) = 21.6 meV at 180 GPa. SnH4 has unusual behavior in strong magnetic fields: B,T‐linear dependences of magnetoresistance and the upper critical magnetic field BC2(T) ∝ (TC – T). The latter contradicts the Wertheimer–Helfand–Hohenberg model developed for conventional superconductors. Along with this, the temperature dependence of electrical resistance of fcc SnH4 in non‐superconducting state exhibits a deviation from what is expected for phonon‐mediated scattering described by the Bloch‐Grüneisen model and is beyond the framework of the Fermi liquid theory. Such anomalies occur for many superhydrides, making them much closer to cuprates than previously believed.

The conditions for occurrence of the magnetoelectric, magnetoelastic, and piezomagnetic effects in crystals of the langasite family with a triangular magnetic lattice are considered on the basis of the phenomenological model. It is shown that the iron-containing langasites with a triangular magnetic lattice may have piezoelectric properties above the N\`eel temperature TN, but they are not ferroelectrics. Occurrence of either ferroelectric or both ferroelectric and piezoelectric states is possible below TN, and these crystals can be considered as multiferroics with a helicoid of magnetic moments oriented along the c axis. The observation of electric polarization pz in these crystals at T<TN is possible at sufficiently large values of piezocoefficients ezyz (class 2) or ezxx (class 3) and as a result of mechanical deformations occurring due to magnetostriction. Moreover, because of magnetoelastic interactions (appearing due to lowering symmetry P321 $\rightarrow${} P3 below TN), the electric polarization and the axis of the magnetic helicoid can both be parallel to the z axis even in the absence of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) effect. Possible ferroelastic and ferroelectric transitions are considered at T<TN. The occurrence of the magnetic helicoid with its axis in the ab plane is also discussed. It may appear due to the spin-orbit interaction (DM effect). In this case, electric polarization must appear also in the ab plane.

Change in the crystal structure of the BiFeO3 multiferroic at high pressures up to 70 GPa in a diamond anvil cell has been studied by the method of synchrotron x-ray diffraction at room temperature. The experiment has been carried out under hydrostatic conditions with helium as a pressure-transferring medium. An anomaly has been observed in the behavior of the structural parameters at pressures P c ≈ 40−50 GPa. This anomaly correlates with the effect of the magnetic collapse of iron moments revealed in this pressure range. It has been found that the bulk compression modulus is equal to B 0 = (75.5 ± 15.5) GPa in the interval 0 < P < P c and is almost quadrupled to a value of B = (292 ± 9) GPa in the interval P > P c. When the pressure decreases, the behavior of the structural parameters is completely reversible in correlation with the reversibility of the magnetic transition. The “diffuseness” of the structural transition in pressure is explained by thermal fluctuations between the high-and low-spin states of Fe3+ ions in the transition region.
