Mladen Pešić finished Bachelor and Master Studies, and PhD Studies at the Faculty of Architecture, University of Belgrade. In his researches he is focusing his study on visual display, spatial representation and memory, and since then he is doing his research on relationship between exhibitions and architecture especially in the context of socialist Yugoslavia. At this moment he is conducting a close research of relationship between Modern architecture, exhibitions and contemporary curating strategies concerning this subject. Besides that he is actively taking part in architectural and design competition individually and as a team member. As a part of scholarship he was involved in scientific projects organized by Faculty of Architecture and Ministry of Education, Science and Technological development of Republic of Serbia. Mladen Pešić has published articles, conference papers and book chapters as author or co-author and he is currently employed as teaching assistant at Faculty of Architecture in Belgrade.
The paper addresses the shift in architectural education regarding the need to develop new approaches in teaching methodology, improve curricula, and make advancements in new learning arenas and digital environments. The research is based on the assumption that online workshops could offer a unique learning experience for students in higher education. Accordingly, workshops are considered an essential element in teaching emergency design. As a result, this can produce broader and more innovative solutions to COVID-19 challenges regarding social distancing, limited movements, regulated use of public space, and suspended daily activities. The theoretical notions of emergency design and education for sustainable design enabled the identification of research perspectives and spatial levels to be taken as a starting point of the workshop “COVID-19 Challenges: Architecture of Pandemic” that was conducted by the University of Belgrade—Faculty of Architecture in April 2020. The critical review of the workshop’s procedural and substantial aspects led to identifying four main COVID-19 design challenges perceived in performance, innovation, alteration, and inclusion. Additionally, the paper’s findings concern the identification of learning potentials and limitations arising from a current topic affecting global society, for which neither solutions nor adequate answers in the field of architecture and urbanism have been found.

The main research subject is forming optimal local models of the architectural and technological intervention in rural areas of the Republic of Serbia, as a way of climate change adaptation, as well as their feasibility study on the West Pomoravlje area. Each region has its own unique features. Thus, in the territory of the Republic of Serbia can be defined zones with the same local characteristics, using the following criteria of physical and human geography: geo-physiognomic characteristics, climatic characteristics, economic development, and level of urbanity. These criteria are defined as the most important. They are the primary determinants for choosing the architectural and technological interventions within the local model as a way of climate change adaptation. The first part of research deals with the zoning of the Republic of Serbia and defining the zones with the same local characteristics. Atlas of villages, providing their current types and possible future models, will be created. The second part is based on the case study of one of the zones - West Pomoravlje zone. Villages and households within the zone will be analysed and sorted into the types and groups. Further research will be based on the examination of possibilities of transforming the existing villages into the eco-villages, mapping the most appropriate positions for new eco-villages and forming a potential eco-village network.

By examining the role of exhibition pavilions with a particular focus on the World Fairs and the Venice Biennale (including visual arts and architecture), questions arise as to the nature and importance of the pavilions as a specific type of architectural objects. Having in mind that contemporary pavilions could be considered as architecture items or installations, boundaries between these two are questioned within this research. At what exact moment does something cease to be an architectural space in the classical sense of the term to become an art project? Pavilions are examined both as exhibition spaces hosting the content, and the content itself. Most probably the answer is somewhere in between and the pavilions are both exhibition spaces and the exhibits per se. They are very often small scale in size but are very important in idea.

Within this research, the exhibitions are considered primarily as institutions, and as a place of interaction among different identities through choice of exhibits, their presentation, spatial layout and the selection and use of the accompanying texts. The context of the research thus put into place will attempt to answer the question of how it is possible to construct a history of the exhibitions-which are forgotten, often without sufficient documentation or records about them. In addition, it will be reconsidered in which manner the exhibitions helped to create and promote the idea of architecture during the 20th century, overlapping with the shifting of discourses, broader philosophical debates and technological innovations.
