Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was used to explore the effects of graphene modifier on the microstructure of asphalt. The morphologies of the before- and after-aged base asphalt and modified asphalt were performed and compared with analysis. The formation mechanism of asphaltic “bee structures” and the influence mechanism of graphene on asphalt were discussed from the classical theory of material science (phase transformation theory and diffusion theory). The results show that graphene facilitates the nucleation of “bee structures”, resulting in an increasing number and decreasing volume of “bee structures” in modified asphalt. Additionally, the anti-aging performance of the modified asphalt improved significantly because of graphene incorporation.

CuCo2O4 decoration carbon nanofibers (CNFs) as an enzyme-free glucose sensor were fabricated via electrospinning technology and carbonization treatment. The CNFs with advantages of abundant nitrogen amounts, porosity, large surface area, and superior electrical conductivity were used as an ideal matrix for CuCo2O4 decoration. The resultant CuCo2O4–CNF hybrids possessed favorable properties of unique three-dimensional architecture and good crystallinity, accompanied by the CuCo2O4 nanoparticles uniformly growing on the CNF skeleton. To further enhance the selective molecular recognition capacity of the developed sensor, a conductive film was synthesized through the electropolymerization of thiophene and thiophene-3-boronic acid (TBA). Based on the synergistic effects of the performances of CNFs, CuCo2O4 nanoparticles, and boronic acid-decorated polythiophene layer, the obtained poly(thiophene-3-boronic acid) (PTBA)/CuCo2O4–CNF-modified electrodes (PTBA/CuCo2O4–CNFs/glassy carbon electrode (GCE)) displayed prominent electrocatalytic activity toward electro-oxidation of glucose. The fabricated sensor presented an outstanding performance in the two linear ranges of 0.01–0.5 mM and 0.5–1.5 mM, with high selectivity of 2932 and 708 μA·mM−1·cm−2, respectively. The composite nanofibers also possessed good stability, repeatability, and excellent anti-interference selectivity toward the common interferences. All these results demonstrate that the proposed composite nanofibers hold great potential in the application of constructing an enzyme-free glucose sensing platform.

In order to systematically study and develop a type of gussasphalt (GA) mix with superior performance, namely GA-10; the effect of Qingchuan Rock Asphalt (QRA) and Trinidad Lake asphalt (TLA) on the GA-10 mix was assessed based on the study of composite natural asphalt modified gussasphalt (CNAMGA) binder. Various analytical tests were used to evaluate the engineering properties, thermal stability and microstructure of CNAMGA mix. The results indicate that the stability of QRA modified binder and TLA modified binder in the normal temperature range and the high temperature range have been improved, and the temperature susceptibility is reduced. The optimal asphalt–aggregate ratio of the GA mix is determined to be 9.7%, which has good high-temperature stability, low-temperature crack resistance and construction workability. The QRA mix has better high-temperature stability than the TLA mix, whereas the low-temperature cracking resistance of the TLA mix is better than that of the QRA mix. The two kinds of GA-10 mix have similar construction workability. The fact that the abundant fine aggregates wrapped in binder fill the coarse aggregates surface contributes to the better adhesion of the GA asphalt concrete. The distribution of aggregate and binder is relatively uniform with fewer pores, and the overall proportion of the binder is greater than that of aggregate.

Polyester (PET) fibers are widely used to reinforce asphalt materials; however, their smooth and hydrophobic surfaces limit interfacial bonding and restrict their reinforcing efficiency. This study develops an eco-friendly surface modification method based on the chemical modification of gallic acid (GA) and aminosilane (KH792) to enhance the compatibility between PET fibers and asphalt. Modified fibers with various molar ratios of GA/KH792 were prepared and incorporated into asphalt mastic. Their performance was evaluated using softening point, cone penetration, dynamic shear rheometer (DSR), multiple stress creep recovery (MSCR), linear amplitude sweep (LAS), and bending beam rheometer (BBR) tests, combined with interfacial interaction analysis and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results show that surface modification significantly improves the reinforcing effect of PET fibers. In particular, the co-modified fiber with a GA/KH792 ratio of 1:1 exhibits the best performance, with increases of 27% in softening point and 105% in shear strength, as well as notable improvements in rutting resistance, fatigue performance, and temperature stability. Interfacial indices and SEM observations confirm enhanced adhesion, dispersion, and load transfer capacity. However, the improvement in low-temperature performance is limited. Overall, GA/KH792 chemical modification effectively enhances fiber asphalt interfacial interaction and provides a simple and sustainable approach for developing high-performance asphalt materials.

To improve the rutting resistance and low-temperature cracking performance of polymer-modified asphalt under extreme conditions, hierarchically structured ZnO-loaded porous activated carbon (ZnO/PAC) nanosheets were introduced as a synergistic reinforcing agent for SBS-modified asphalt. The ZnO/PAC hybrids were synthesized via template-assisted carbonization followed by hydrothermal growth, and their effects were evaluated by microscopic characterization and rheological tests, including temperature sweeps, multiple stress creep and recovery (MSCR), and bending beam rheometer (BBR) analyses. ZnO was successfully anchored onto the PAC, forming a three-dimensional flower-like nanostructure. Among the investigated samples, ZPS3 with 3 wt.% ZnO/PAC showed the best overall performance. At 64 °C, the rutting factor increased from 4.2 kPa for the SBS-modified asphalt to 6.8 kPa for ZPS3, representing a ~62% enhancement and indicating markedly improved high-temperature deformation resistance. MSCR results further confirmed the superior rutting resistance of ZPS3, which exhibited the highest recovery and the lowest non-recoverable creep compliance. In addition, BBR results showed that the low-temperature performance grade improved from −12 °C for conventional the SBS-modified asphalt to −18 °C for the ZnO/PAC-modified system. These results demonstrate that ZnO/PAC nanosheets can effectively enhance both the high-temperature rutting resistance and low-temperature cracking resistance of SBS-modified asphalt.

The long-term exposure of asphalt pavement to ultraviolet radiation causes significant performance degradation and reduces its service life. To enhance the UV resistance of asphalt, nanocomposite modifiers have been incorporated through mechanical blending. However, their effectiveness has been largely limited by poor component uniformity. To address this issue, UV-resistant antioxidant nano-TiO2 was employed to modify the UV-shielding of layered porous carbon (PC), resulting in the synthesis of nano-TiO2 intercalated PC (TiO2/PC). The PC nanosheet was modified by TiO2 nanoparticles via in situ growth, significantly improving the dispersion homogeneity of TiO2. Comprehensive characterization (SEM/EDS/FT-IR/XPS) confirmed the successful synthesis of TiO2/PC with well-defined interfacial bonding. Compared to control samples (PC, TiO2, and TiO2 + PC), the asphalt modified by TiO2/PC-2 composite demonstrated superior UV aging resistance, lower physical aging indices and reduced rheological aging parameters. Moreover, TiO2/PC modifier prominently suppressed the formation of oxidative groups (C=O/S=O), improved the colloidal stability, and delayed the sol–gel transition of the modified asphalt. The synergistic UV shielding mechanism was attributed to the enhanced UV absorption of TiO2, multi-reflection and scattering within the PC matrix, and the radical scavenging capabilities of both components. These results provide new design insights for developing anti-UV aging modifiers for asphalt pavements.
