This study presents a novel approach for unsupervised change detection in multitemporal remotely sensed images. This method addresses the problem of the analysis of the difference image by proposing a novel and robust semi-supervised fuzzy C-means (RSFCM) clustering algorithm. The advantage of the RSFCM is to further introduce the pseudolabels from the difference image compared with the existing change detection methods; these methods, mainly use difference intensity levels and spatial context. First, the patterns with a high probability of belonging to the changed or unchanged class are identified by selectively thresholding the difference image histogram. Second, the pseudolabels of these nearly certain pixel-patterns are jointly exploited with the intensity levels and spatial information in the properly defined RSFCM classifier in order to discriminate the changed pixels from the unchanged pixels. Specifically, labeling knowledge is used to guide the RSFCM clustering process to enhance the change information and obtain a more accurate membership; information on spatial context helps to lower the effect of noise and outliers by modifying the membership. RSFCM can detect more changes and provide noise immunity by the synergistic exploitation of pseudolabels and spatial context. The two main contributions of this study are as follows: (1) it proposes the idea of combining the three information types from the difference image, namely, (a) intensity levels, (b) labels, and (c) spatial context; and (2) it develops the novel RSFCM algorithm for image segmentation and forms the proposed change detection framework. The proposed method is effective and efficient for change detection as confirmed by six experimental results of this study.

Object extraction from remote sensing images is critical for a wide range of applications, and object-oriented accuracy assessment plays a vital role in guaranteeing its quality. To evaluate object extraction accuracy, this paper presents several novel accuracy measures that differ from the norm. First, area-based and object number-based accuracy assessment measures are given based on a confusion matrix. Second, different accuracy assessment measures are provided by combining the similarities of multiple features. Third, to improve the reliability of the object extraction accuracy assessment results, two accuracy assessment measures based on object detail differences are designed. In contrast to existing measures, the presented method synergizes the feature similarity and distance difference, which considerably improves the reliability of object extraction evaluation. Encouraging results on two QuickBird images indicate the potential for further use of the presented algorithm.

This letter proposed an advanced superpixel-based Markov random field (MRF) model for unsupervised change detection. First, simple linear iterative clustering was implemented to the difference image to get a superpixel map. The initial change map is then obtained using fuzzy c-means by clustering the superpixel map. Finally, the initial change map of superpixel is iteratively refined by improved superpixel-based MRF that incorporated the spatial attraction model. It considers the spatial information of adjacent superpixels to complete the miss-detection superpixels and eliminate false-alarm superpixels. The experimental results over two data sets demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Underground coal fires can increase surface temperature, cause surface cracks and collapse, and release poisonous and harmful gases, which significantly harm the ecological environment and humans. Traditional methods of extracting coal fires, such as global threshold, K-mean and active contour model, usually produce many false alarms. Therefore, this paper proposes an improved active contour model by introducing the distinguishing energies of coal fires and others into the traditional active contour model. Taking Urumqi, Xinjiang, China as the research area, coal fires are detected from Landsat-8 satellite and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) data. The results show that the proposed method can eliminate many false alarms compared with some traditional methods, and achieve detection of small-area coal fires by referring field survey data. More importantly, the results obtained from UAV data can help identify not only burning coal fires but also potential underground coal fires. This paper provides an efficient method for high-precision coal fire detection and strong technical support for reducing environmental pollution and coal energy use.
