Gastric cancer (GC) is one of the most commonly occurring cancers, and metabolism-related genes (MRGs) are associated with its development. Transcriptome data and the relevant clinical data were downloaded from The Cancer Genome Atlas and Gene Expression Omnibus databases, and we identified 194 MRGs differentially expressed between GC and adjacent nontumor tissues. Through univariate Cox and lasso regression analyses we identified 13 potential prognostic differentially expressed MRGs (PDEMRGs). These PDEMRGs (CKMT2, ME1, GSTA2, ASAH1, GGT5, RDH12, NNMT, POLR1A, ACYP1, GLA, OPLAH, DCK, and POLD3) were used to build a Cox regression risk model to predict the prognosis of GC patients. Further univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses showed that this model could serve as an independent prognostic parameter. Gene Set Enrichment Analysis showed significant enrichment pathways that could potentially contribute to pathogenesis. This model also revealed the probability of genetic alterations of PDEMRGs. We have thus identified a valuable metabolic model for predicting the prognosis of GC patients. The PDEMRGs in this model reflect the dysregulated metabolic microenvironment of GC and provide useful noninvasive biomarkers.

Sparganii rhizoma (SL) has potential therapeutic effects on gastric cancer (GC), but its main active ingredients and possible anticancer mechanism are still unclear. In this study, we used HPLC-Q-TOF–MS/MS to comprehensively analyse the chemical components of the aqueous extract of SL. On this basis, a network pharmacology method incorporating target prediction, gene function annotation, and molecular docking was performed to analyse the identified compounds, thereby determining the main active ingredients and hub genes of SL in the treatment of GC. Finally, the mRNA and protein expression levels of the hub genes of GC patients were further analysed by the Oncomine, GEPIA, and HPA databases. A total of 41 compounds were identified from the aqueous extract of SL. Through network analysis, we identified seven main active ingredients and ten hub genes: acacetin, sanleng acid, ferulic acid, methyl 3,6-dihydroxy-2-[(2-hydroxyphenyl) ethynyl]benzoate, caffeic acid, adenine nucleoside, azelaic acid and PIK3R1, PIK3CA, SRC, MAPK1, AKT1, HSP90AA1, HRAS, STAT3, FYN, and RHOA. The results indicated that SL might play a role in GC treatment by controlling the PI3K-Akt and other signalling pathways to regulate biological processes such as proliferation, apoptosis, migration, and angiogenesis in tumour cells. In conclusion, this study used HPLC-Q-TOF–MS/MS combined with a network pharmacology approach to provide an essential reference for identifying the chemical components of SL and its mechanism of action in the treatment of GC.

Pyroptosis, a highly regulated form of cell death, could hold the key to revolutionizing cancer treatment. With cancer posing a significant global health challenge due to its high morbidity and mortality rates, exploring unconventional therapeutic approaches becomes imperative. Chinese medicine, renowned for its holistic principles, presents intriguing possibilities for treating gastric cancer (GC). Notably, baicalin, a prominent component found in the traditional Chinese herb Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi, has shown promising clinical potential in gastric cancer treatment. To shed light on this intriguing phenomenon, a multidisciplinary approach was undertaken, combining systems biology, bioinformatics, and in vitro studies. The primary objective was to unravel the intricate workings underlying baicalein's ability to promote gastric cancer cell pyroptosis. The findings from this comprehensive study unveiled an essential signaling axis involving NF-κB-NLRP3, which plays a pivotal role in the process of baicalein-induced pyroptosis in gastric cancer cells. As the investigation progressed, it became evident that baicalein exhibited a remarkable capability to reverse the effects of the NLRP3 inhibitor, MCC950 Sodium. Excitingly, the efficacy of cell pyroptosis induction by baicalein demonstrated a discernible dose-dependent relationship, showcasing its potential as a valuable therapeutic agent. The complex nature of these findings underscores the intricate interplay between baicalein, NF-κB-NLRP3 signaling, and gastric cancer cell pyroptosis. As the scientific community delves deeper into the world of Pyroptosis and its therapeutic implications, baicalein's potential as a game-changer in the fight against gastric cancer becomes increasingly evident.

The UN’s 2030 Agenda defined 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In order to ensure the implementation of this global agenda, the UN proposed a systematic follow-up and review through indicator-based tracking and reporting of the progress with statistical and geospatial information toward SDGs at national, regional, and global levels. This has posed many technical and institutional challenges. Although international communities have devoted great attention to this hot topic, most of their work has focused on the conceptual design and preliminary testing. There are very few good practices for a comprehensive measurement and assessment of progress toward SDGs with the integration of statistical and geospatial information at national or local levels. This paper presents the methodology and results of a pioneer project which measured the progress toward SDGs at a local level in China (i.e., Deqing County) by integrating statistical and geospatial information. In this study, a number of technical/institutional issues have been tackled, such as the adoption of appropriate indicators at a local level, availability and acquisition of reliable data sets, and spatiotemporal analysis with a geographical perspective, interaction between SDGs and cross-sector coordination. The major conclusions are (a) the comprehensive progress toward SDGs in Deqing can be most appropriately measured and assessed by integrating geospatial and statistical information; (b) Deqing has made significant economic and social advances while maintaining a good ecological environment over the past few years. The results were released at the first United Nations World Geospatial Information Congress as a good practice and a live example to stimulate discussions.

Purpose: This study aims to comprehensively compare and analyze the burden of gastric cancer and attributable risk factors in China and Group of Twenty (G20) countries from 1990 to 2021, based on the latest the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2021 study. It also predicts the trends in gastric cancer incidence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) in China and G20 countries over the next 19 years. Methods: This observational longitudinal study utilizes data from the GBD 2021 study, employing indicators that include incidence, mortality, DALYs, age-standardized rates, and attributable risk factors to assess gastric cancer trends. The joinpoint regression model was used to calculate the annual average percentage change to determine long-term trends of significant changes in gastric cancer occurrence in China and G20 countries. The autoregressive integrated moving average model was employed to predict the burden trends of gastric cancer in China and G20 countries from 2021 to 2040. Results: In 2021, the age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR), age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR), and age-standardized DALYs rate (ASDR) (95% uncertainty interval) for gastric cancer in China were 29.053 (22.423–36.2), 21.509 (16.663–26.611), and 501.26 (387.291–627.976) respectively, indicating a decrease compared to 1990. The ASIR, ASMR, and ASDR for G20 countries in 1990 and 2021 were substantially lower than those of China during the same periods. Joinpoint regression analysis demonstrated a significant overall decline in the APC of gastric cancer in China and G20 countries from 1990 to 2021, although a short-term upward trend was observed in China from 1998 to 2004. Predictions indicate a downward trend in ASIR, ASMR, and ASDR for both China and G20 countries over the next 19 years. However, in terms of risk factors, the proportion of DALYs due to smoking and high sodium diets in China ranked first among G20 countries in 2021. Conclusion: Due to the implementation of preventive strategies, advancements in healthcare, and improved economic conditions, the incidence, mortality, and DALYs of gastric cancer in China have decreased. However, there remains a certain gap compared to G20 countries at the same time. In the future, China should develop more detailed prevention and control strategies targeting risk factors, tailored to men, women, and different age groups.
