Biography

Prof. Dr. Kristin Verbeke graduated as a Pharmacist from KU Leuven in 1991. From 1991-2002, she was at the Laboratory of Radiopharmaceutical Chemistry of KU Leuven where she acquired extensive expertise in the development and evaluation of new and existing radiolabelled tracers to be used in Nuclear Medicine. In 2002, she was appointed to the Laboratory of Digestion and Absorption in the Faculty of Medicine of KU Leuven where she became in charge of the organization and execution of stable isotope labeled breath tests used in the clinical diagnosis of gastrointestinal disorders at the University Hospitals Leuven. In addition, she developed a new research line that is focused on the evaluation and modulation of bacterial colonic metabolism in humans and its health implications. Her research focuses on dietary strategies that modulate colonic bacterial metabolism and how these interventions might improve health. Therefore, her research is situated on the edge between gastroenterology and nutrition. She is the past secretary and past president of the Belgian Nutrition Society and vice-chair of the Prebiotic Task Force of ILSI Europe. Furthermore, she is a board member of the International Scientific Association for Probiotics and Prebiotics (ISAPP).
