Developing understanding of the economic value that communities ascribe to improved operations and maintenance (O&M) services has emerged as a key factor in achieving financial sustainability for rural water systems. The present study elicits household willingness to pay (WTP) for improved O&M services in eight gravity-fed water schemes in Idjwi Island (Democratic Republic of the Congo, DRC). A contingent valuation survey was implemented through an open-ended format questionnaire to 1105 heads of household and a log-linear regression model was employed to assess the factors influencing higher values. Findings show an average willingness to pay of 327 Congolese Francs (CDF) per month and 36 CDF per bucket. Results also indicate a significant WTP differential among studied schemes. The analysis of the conditioning factors reveals that the level of excludability, the participation in management meetings and the time employed in fetching water from an improved source are contingent with their WTP. The findings of this study are important for development agents trying to establish acceptable, affordable and practicable tariffs that help finance reliable rural water systems in Idjwi.

In the recent decades, forest certification based on third-party external audits has gained momentum. This type of certification has been developed as a monitoring tool aimed at improving governance in corporate environmental management and differentiating products in the increasing environmentally sensitive markets. Although the scholarly literature has extensively analyzed the adoption and dissemination of forest certification, the findings of the external audits and certification practices remain under researched. On the basis of the analysis of 105 audit reports issued by accredited third-party certification bodies in Romania, this article sheds light on procedural factors that have significant influence on the characteristics of non-conformities (NCs) identified by Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) third party audits. Our research offers empirical evidence that certain procedural factors such as the type of assessment, auditing days, number of auditors, or the presence of foreign members in an audit team have a significant influence on the auditing process outcomes: number and grade of non-conformities, standard references, or methods of NC detection. The study opens interesting new lines of research—the influence of procedural or other types of contextual factors on certification outcomes—and provides indications on the effectiveness of the certification procedures and guidelines in certification process quality assurance.

Transportation Network Companies (TNCs), also referred to as ride-sharing or app-based on-demand ride services, have gained momentum. The phenomenon has created debate in the media and faced heated reactions from the traditional taxi sector. Yet surprisingly, the phenomenon is still under-researched in the specialized scholarly literature on transport systems. There is a lack of empirical evidence about the real impact of these systems on the traditional taxi sector. This article aims to fill this gap in the literature by analyzing empirically the impact of TNCs on the traditional taxi sector in Spain, a specific country-case where the phenomenon has been fiercely opposed. With this aim, a comparative analysis of the economic and financial situation of 416 traditional Spanish taxi companies is conducted. The findings show that the new competitors have had a significant negative impact on the profitability of the traditional taxi companies in Madrid and Barcelona, but have not affected other indicators and areas analyzed in the initial stage of TNCs. Implications for a set of stakeholders, including managers in the traditional sector, investors and policymakers, are discussed, together with potential avenues for further research.

This article analyses the added value of IATF 16949 – a standard for quality management in the automotive sector – with respect to ISO 9001, the most popular standard for quality management worldwide. An exploratory qualitative study was carried out based on a multiple case study. Eight companies operating at different levels of the Spanish automotive sector supply chain were analysed and 27 interviews were conducted – 17 with managers of these companies and 10 with auditors and consultants. Multiple internal and external sources of documentation were also analysed. The findings show that IATF 16949 adds value to a more flexible ISO 9001 in five main areas: market, customer service in the supply chain, operational performance, staff, and technology. Overall, IATF 16949 is seen as a ‘license to operate’ for automotive sector suppliers, for whom ISO 9001 seems to have lost its signalling value. This study sheds light on the raison d'être of sectoral standards for QMSs such as IATF 16949 and contributes to the literature on the neo-institutional approach to QMSs and explains some of the main weaknesses of ISO 9001.

The implications of OHSAS 18001 for substantive Occupational Health and Safety outcomes such, as a reduction in work accidents, have been under-researched in the scholarly literature. The impact of this standard on other aspects of performance, such as profitability and productivity, has attracted more attention. This article aims to fill this gap by shedding light on the relationship between OHSAS 18001 certification and the rates of minor, serious, and fatal accidents per employee at work experienced in certified and non-certified companies. Based on an analysis of a sample of 5,147 Spanish firms, the findings show that OHSAS 18001 certification is only loosely related with better occupational health and safety performance measured in terms of rate of accidents at work. A propensity for OHSAS 18001 certification to be found in economic sectors of activity with worse occupational health and safety outcomes in terms of rate of work-related accidents is identified. There is evidence of a negative selection-effect of the main international management standard for occupational health and safety. Potential distortions and biases that may be related to these and other findings in the scholarly literature are analyzed. Managerial implications of the main findings, implications for policy makers, and avenues for future research are discussed.

Community opposition is one of the key obstacles to the expansion of wind turbine developments. The scholarly literature has focused on public opinion on wind farms (WFs) and the level of community acceptance. The efforts of Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), to gain community acceptance has been under-researched. To fill this gap, the present study analyzes the evolution of interventions by a leading OEM to secure the acceptance of local communities for wind energy projects and the outcomes of those efforts. The fieldwork consisted of a longitudinal case study carried out from 2014 to 2017 by a leading international OEM. In depth personal interviews were also conducted with six experts in the field. The main efforts of the OEM focused on the visual impact of the developments, health and safety issues, community involvement and social investment in the community. In selecting the location for developing a WF, economic criteria usually prevail over social criteria. Although the company makes social investments in the community, different groups point out that those local communities should be taken more seriously, as they can serve as facilitators in the development of projects. Implications for stakeholders such as developers and policy makers are discussed.

In order to analyze the main reasons, the adoption process, outcomes and satisfaction obtained by the architecture firms and other actors involved in the process of adopting the ISO 14006 eco-design standard, we developed a qualitative research using a Delphi type methodology, based on the results of a previous multiple case study research conducted with nine architecture firms. Among the main results, it should be highlighted the difficulties faced by architecture firms to obtain environmental information of raw materials, the poor recognition given by the client to environmental aspects compared with costs and the limited role of government supporting eco-design adoption, increasing the level of requirements of environmental legislation, and taking into account environmental issues in public tenders. It is also noteworthy the main stakeholders involved in the adoption and certification process of the ISO 14006 have demonstrated a medium or medium-high level of satisfaction.

This article analyzes whether customers of hotels that are certified for quality management are more satisfied than the customers of non-certified hotels of similar category and location. An empirical study was carried out with a total sample of 186,769 guest ratings of 828 Spanish and Italian hotels. The findings show that quality certified hotels do not receive a statistically significantly better evaluation or rating from their customers. Indeed, the statistical analysis carried out confirms that certified hotels have a statistically significantly lower rating in terms of value for money than non-certified hotels. The implications for managers, customers and other stakeholders are discussed. The article also discusses the potential dangers in inferring directly that quality certification in the hospitality industry leads to superior customer satisfaction as is frequently suggested in both the practitioner and the scholarly literature in the field.

The ISO 14006 ecodesign standard was created in 2011 with a view to complementing the successful ISO 14001 standard for company environmental management. Although there are a lot of works in literature on the subject that have analysed the adoption process for this last-mentioned standard, the former has not actually received so much attention. To try and make a contribution to special literature, the aim of this article is to carry out an exploratory analysis of how the ISO 14006 standard has been adopted and integrated within a series of Spanish companies that have been pioneers in doing so. After analysing the main motives that have led companies to adopt the ISO 14006 standard, the study then attempts to shed light on the impact of such adoption both on an operative level and in terms of company results. A series of conclusions are also gathered in this chapter that may be of interest both to companies and to other stakeholders.

The Spanish UNE 150301 standard was used as a basic reference point in paving the way for the ISO 14006 ecodesign standard. This article aims to analyze the pioneering UNE 150301 standard, as well as its adoption process and its practical results in the lift industry. Since the UNE 150301 standard is in a very early stage of dissemination, an empirical study based on a qualitative methodology has been designed. An exploratory case study has therefore been carried out with the participation of a company from the lift industry which is, in fact, the first Spanish industrial company to have adopted the aforementioned ecodesign standard. The company subjected to analysis has integrated ecoindicators into the design process to analyze the environmental impact of its products on each stage of their life cycle. Using these ecoindicators, the company has observed that the main impact is evident in the usage stage, due to energy consumption. The company has managed to improve products by means of a continuous improvement process, with reductions in terms of both cost and environmental impact. The adoption of the standard UNE 150301 can be a useful tool in reducing the environmental impact of the products and in obtaining some competitive advantages, such as cost reduction, improvement in energy efficiency of the product, and a better adaptation to laws and regulations.

A Spanish ecodesign standard (the UNE 150301) is being used as a basic reference point in paving the way for the future ISO 14006 ecodesign standard which may foreseeably be passed in 2011. This article aims to analyze the experience regarding adoption of the UNE 150301 in Spain. Following an analysis of the standard’s structure, its objectives and scope, its real implementation process is then analyzed based on an exploratory qualitative study carried out in four Spanish companies that have been pioneers in adopting this environmental standard. The conclusion is drawn in the article that in all the cases analyzed, the greatest source of impact occurs in the phase in which the product is used and is related to energy consumption. Companies appear to be satisfied with the adoption of this standard and, in particular, point out that they have managed to reduce the environmental impact of their products. However, they draw attention to the fact that, to deal with certain instances of impact that increases in cost entail, administrative bodies need to establish mandatory regulations, as environmentally-friendly companies would otherwise lose competitiveness.
