In this paper, fault diagnosis and tolerant control strategies have been studied comprehensively for dual-three phase PMSM drives to improve the reliability. Based on direct torque control (DTC) with space vector modulation (SVM), a series of diagnostic and tolerant control methods have been proposed for five types of faults, namely speed-sensor fault, DC-link voltage-sensor fault, current-sensor fault, open-phase fault and open-switch fault. Firstly, diagnosis and tolerant schemes are proposed for speed-sensor fault by estimating the rotor angle speed with the rotating speed of stator flux. Secondly, diagnosis and tolerant schemes are proposed for DC-link voltage-sensor fault by combining the current model based stator flux observer with the voltage model based stator flux observer. Thirdly, a three-step method is designed to diagnose three types of faults related to current signals, namely current-sensor fault, open-phase fault and open-switch fault simultaneously. A vector space decomposition (VSD) based current estimation method is proposed to achieve fault-tolerant control for the current-sensor fault, and the voltage compensation based fault-tolerant control is presented for both open-phase fault and open-switch fault. The experiments have been taken on a laboratory prototype to verify the effectiveness of the proposed fault diagnosis and tolerance schemes.

Linear induction motors (LIMs) have been extensively adopted in urban railway transportation given their non-adhesion thrust and simple stator structure. However, these LIMs undergo unfavorable power factor and efficiency considering the copper and eddy losses of them. Recently, linear flux-switching permanent-magnet motors (LFSPMs) have attracted the attention of researchers due to their high power density, simple structure, easy heat dissipation, high efficiency and high power factor. However, so far, no quantitative comparison exists between LFSPMs and LIMs in the size of 1:1 to prove the feasibility for LFSPMs to be used in railway transit systems. Therefore, a comparative analysis between the two motors is also conducted. First, this study investigates the LIMs for railway transit using finite element method (FEM). Second, the LFSPMs for railway transit is designed and optimized. Third, the electromagnetic performance of the two motors are compared and analyzed through the FEM. Finally, a prototype of the LFSPMs is constructed in a small size to validate the FEM results. It is concluded that LFSPMs offer a favorable thrust force, have high efficiency, and high power factor but have large normal force and force ripple. Therefore, applying LFSPM requires reliable supporting device and shock absorber.

Flux-switching permanent magnet machine typically suffers from relatively high cogging torque due to its special doubly salient structure and high air-gap flux density, causing undesired torque ripples, as well as acoustic noise and vibration, especially at low speeds. In this paper, an analytical expression of cogging torque is derived based on a magnetomotive force-permeance model, through which the optimal design parameters and dimensions, such as combinations of stator slots and rotor poles, skewing angle, stator tooth width, rotor tooth width, and magnet thickness, can be determined. Based on the derived analytical model, two novel approaches for cogging torque reduction are proposed, i.e., asymmetric magnetomotive force and asymmetric permeance, respectively, and consequently, the optimal designs are also acquired analytically. However, it is also found that the optimal choice of the proposed techniques depends on the combinations of stator slots and rotor poles of the machines. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed approaches is verified by both finite element analytical predictions and experimental results.

The paper presents a number of advanced solutions on electric machines and machine-based systems for the powertrain of electric vehicles (EVs). Two types of systems are considered, namely the drive systems designated to the EV propulsion and the power split devices utilized in the popular series-parallel hybrid electric vehicle architecture. After reviewing the main requirements for the electric drive systems, the paper illustrates advanced electric machine topologies, including a stator permanent magnet (stator-PM) motor, a hybrid-excitation motor, a flux memory motor and a redundant motor structure. Then, it illustrates advanced electric drive systems, such as the magnetic-geared in-wheel drive and the integrated starter generator (ISG). Finally, three machine-based implementations of the power split devices are expounded, built up around the dual-rotor PM machine, the dual-stator PM brushless machine and the magnetic-geared dual-rotor machine. As a conclusion, the development trends in the field of electric machines and machine-based systems for EVs are summarized.

In this paper, an airgap-harmonic-orientated design method is proposed, where the airgap harmonics are newly acted as the effective bridge between the three key elements of permanent magnet sources, modulators, or armature windings and the motor performances. And in the proposed design method, the airgap harmonics play couple of roles of design objectives and variables, which are not only served as the design variables for the motor performances, but also considered as the objectives for design parameters. For extensive investigation, a V-shape flux-modulated permanent-magnet (V-FMPM) motor is selected as a design example, which has a potential application for the electrical vehicles. In the optimization process, the sensitivity analysis of different airgap harmonics on the torque performance is conducted to select the leading airgap harmonics. Meanwhile, the sensitivity degrees of the design parameters on the leading harmonics are calculated to pick out the sensitive design parameters. Then, the performances of the V-FMPM motor are evaluated for validating airgap-harmonic-orientated design method. Finally, a prototype motor is built and tested. Both the theoretical analysis and experimental results verify the effectiveness and reasonability of the proposed design method and the V-FMPM motor.

This paper models a huge family of electrical machines featuring simple salient poles in a unified way based on the general airgap field modulation theory. The modulation principle is analyzed by introducing the magnetomotive force (MMF) modulation operator, which characterizes the influence of variable reluctance block on the primitive magnetizing MMF distribution established by field winding. Popular machine topologies are investigated in detail from the perspective of airgap field modulation mechanism. The iron core magnetic potential drop due to the finite slot opening depth and the impact of iron saturation on the parameters are considered by proper theoretical indication. In addition, the modulation effect of salient poles highly depend on the slot-opening-width- to-pole-pitch ratio $\epsilon$. The effect can be neglected when $\epsilon$<0.3 and the best modulation results will be achieved when $\epsilon$=0.5. It is also found that mainly three different harmonics parts modulated by salient poles contribute on airgap flux density and torque production. Straightforward relations between the frequency-domain or amplitude information of performances indexes and topological parameters can be obtained obviously by certain analytical expressions without heavy finite-element analysis (FEA). Analytical results are verified by 2D FEA and experiments measurements.
