Pulmonary nodule is one of the lung diseases and its early diagnosis and treatment are essential to cure the patient. This paper introduces a deep learning framework to support the automated detection of lung nodules in computed tomography (CT) images. The proposed framework employs VGG-SegNet supported nodule mining and pre-trained DL-based classification to support automated lung nodule detection. The classification of lung CT images is implemented using the attained deep features, and then these features are serially concatenated with the handcrafted features, such as the Grey Level Co-Occurrence Matrix (GLCM), Local-Binary-Pattern (LBP) and Pyramid Histogram of Oriented Gradients (PHOG) to enhance the disease detection accuracy. The images used for experiments are collected from the LIDC-IDRI and Lung-PET-CT-Dx datasets. The experimental results attained show that the VGG19 architecture with concatenated deep and handcrafted features can achieve an accuracy of 97.83% with the SVM-RBF classifier.

Medical images play a fundamental role in disease screening, and automated evaluation of these images is widely preferred in hospitals. Recently, Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) supported medical data assessment is widely adopted to inspect a set of medical imaging modalities. Extraction of the leukocyte section from a thin blood smear image is one of the essential procedures during the preliminary disease screening process. The conventional segmentation needs complex/hybrid procedures to extract the necessary section and the results achieved with conventional methods sometime tender poor results. Hence, this research aims to implement the CNN-assisted image segmentation scheme to extract the leukocyte section from the RGB scaled hematological images. The proposed work employs various CNN-based segmentation schemes, such as SegNet, U-Net, and VGG-UNet. We used the images from the Leukocyte Images for Segmentation and Classification (LISC) database. In this work, five classes of the leukocytes are considered, and each CNN segmentation scheme is separately implemented and evaluated with the ground-truth image. The experimental outcome of the proposed work confirms that the overall results accomplished with the VGG-UNet are better (Jaccard-Index = 91.5124%, Dice-Coefficient = 94.4080%, and Accuracy = 97.7316%) than those of the SegNet and U-Net schemes Finally, the merit of the proposed scheme is also confirmed using other similar image datasets, such as Blood Cell Count and Detection (BCCD) database and ALL-IDB2. The attained result confirms that the proposed scheme works well on hematological images and offers better performance measure values.

The emergence of mobile computing provides the ability to access information at any time and place. However, as mobile computing environments have inherent factors like power, storage, asymmetric communication cost, and bandwidth limitations, efficient query processing and minimum query response time are definitely of great interest. This survey groups a variety of query optimization and processing mechanisms in mobile databases into two main categories, namely: (i) query processing strategy, and (ii) caching management strategy. Query processing includes both pull and push operations (broadcast mechanisms). We further classify push operation into on-demand broadcast and periodic broadcast. Push operation (on-demand broadcast) relates to designing techniques that enable the server to accommodate multiple requests so that the request can be processed efficiently. Push operation (periodic broadcast) corresponds to data dissemination strategies. In this scheme, several techniques to improve the query performance by broadcasting data to a population of mobile users are described. A caching management strategy defines a number of methods for maintaining cached data items in clients' local storage. This strategy considers critical caching issues such as caching granularity, caching coherence strategy and caching replacement policy. Finally, this survey concludes with several open issues relating to mobile query optimization and processing strategy.
