Mesoscale eddies are important to ocean circulation due to their roles in the transport of mass, energy, and heat. This study employs a combination of data sources to initiate a statistical analysis of eddy spatiotemporal characteristics in the Bay of Bengal (BOB) to elucidate the sea surface and vertical structures of the eddies and their impacts on sea surface chlorophyll (Chl) distributions. The results suggest that 1237 cyclonic eddies (CEs) and 1121 anticyclonic eddies (AEs) were detected in 26 years. The number of two eddy polarities was almost the same, and most of them spread to the west or southwest direction. The vertical change of temperature (T) and salinity (S) caused by the eddies is studied and the anomalous eddies, i.e., a CE (AE) eddy with warm (cold) water at the center, are mainly distributed on the northeast side of the Island of Sri Lanka. Furthermore, CEs are found to increase Chl concentration in the surrounding sea by approximately 11.15%, while AEs decrease concentrations also by approximately 11.25%. Changes in Chl concentrations occur most rapidly during the mature and intensification eddy phases. Observations also indicate that the strong local current and wind fields are the primary mechanisms in eddy generation.
River islands are sandbars formed by scouring and silting. Their evolution is affected by several factors, among which are runoff and sediment discharge. The spatial-temporal evolution of seven river islands in the Nanjing Section of the Yangtze River of China was examined using TM (Thematic Mapper) and ETM (Enhanced Thematic Mapper)+ images from 1985 to 2015 at five year intervals. The following approaches were applied in this study: the threshold value method, binarization model, image registration, image cropping, convolution and cluster analysis. Annual runoff and sediment discharge data as measured at the Datong hydrological station upstream of Nanjing section were also used to determine the roles and impacts of various factors. The results indicated that: (1) TM/ETM+ images met the criteria of information extraction of river islands; (2) generally, the total area of these islands in this section and their changing rate decreased over time; (3) sediment and river discharge were the most significant factors in island evolution. They directly affect river islands through silting or erosion. Additionally, anthropocentric influences could play increasingly important roles.
Marine heatwaves (MHWs) are persistent, discrete, extreme high-temperature events in the ocean, which can destructively affect marine ecosystems. Using satellite remote sensing data and reanalysis data from 1982 to 2021, we find that six indices characterizing the MHWs are in a remarkable increasing trend in the Japan/East Sea (JES), which shows that the most severe MHW events take place in the East Korean Bay (EKB) in the summer of 2021. Based on this finding, the present study focuses on the characteristics and mechanisms of the MHWs in the EKB and its adjacent areas from June to August 2021. The analysis reveals that the total days and mean intensity of MHWs that occur in the EKB are 1.84 and 1.47 times more than those averaged in the JES, respectively. It is shown that mechanisms for the occurrences of the MHWs in the summer of 2021 are caused by the atmospheric high-pressure system moving to the EKB area. Other reasons also decrease the water cooling: the net positive lateral heat fluxes across open boundaries, and the weak sea surface wind over the EKB area. Other possible reasons which cause the summer MHW events in 2021 need the oceanic numerical models to further investigate the issue.
The quasi-linear or nonlinear interactions among different ocean motions dominate the system internal structure and appearance feature presented in spatial and temporal evolution. However, deficiency of the characteristics set computation model for internal wavenumber spectra proves to be a serious barrier to derive interaction mechanisms of internal waves with large or small scale ocean motions. In this study, a characteristics set computation model for internal wavenumber spectra is proposed for complicated offshore environments. The refraction of current shear instability, bottom topography and the reflection at surface and bottom are attentively considered in the complicated characteristics inlaid scheme. Model results are validated with MODIS retrieved internal wave parameters in the Sulu Sea and Celebes Sea. This original characteristics set computation model for internal wavenumber spectra can be used widely and can further improve the understandings of generation, dissipation, nonlinear wave-wave interaction and mixing process of internal waves.
