The development of Green Transport Corridors (GTCs) is an important strategy to help a region achieve more sustainable solutions. When such GTCs are implemented, multimodal supply chains and environmentally-friendly alternatives for freight transportation through economically relevant hubs and long-distance routes can be facilitated. Based on previous efforts for evaluating single routes, this paper aimed to propose a single multi-criteria Logistics Composite Index (LCI), constructed based on a set of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), to evaluate the efficiency of GTCs considering the integration of multiple transport modes (highways, railways, and waterways). This approach consists of a dual-step procedure, applying a Network Equilibrium Model (NEM) and Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). It was applied to Brazilian agricultural bulk transport export corridors, considering the existing and planned infrastructure in the harvest year of 2018/2019. In general, the best indexes were those from corridors considering planned railways. Specifically, the best index was from a corridor from the Northeast region. The second was from the South. The third was from the North (Amazon), and was one of the few corridors with adequate waterways. This approach is useful for decision-makers to determine the most efficient corridors as well as for policy-makers to guide infrastructure investments and address public policies.

The study reports the CO2 emissions from diesel combustion in the following stages of the Brazilian ethanol supply chain: (a) agricultural operations (management), (b) sugarcane transportation to the mill, and (c) biofuel transportation to the destination. To assess the sensitivity of the results to different origins, five regions representative of ethanol production were selected, and the final destination was the port of Santos. The transportation stage from the mill to the port included the possible effects of using multimodal alternatives, such as road–rail and road–pipeline. The results indicate that diesel consumption varies greatly by region of origin, and agricultural management, such as tilling, planting, and harvesting operations, accounts for about 70% of total diesel emissions to the ethanol supply chain. Rail and pipeline transportation are ultimately important for mitigating emissions from fuel consumption in logistics corridors for exporting ethanol. It is a valuable contribution to supporting private actions and public policies related to the mitigation of emissions in the logistic stages of bioethanol, especially related to the optimization of the agricultural management process and improvement of the multimodal transport infrastructure, respectively. It is also a lesson to countries intending to produce ethanol from sugarcane.

Recentemente foi lançado pelo governo brasileiro o programa Renovabio, visando ampliar a participação do etanol na demanda por combustíveis para veículos leves e contribuir para o cumprimento das metas de redução de emissão de gases causadores do efeito estufa (GEE) firmadas no Acordo de Paris. O sucesso desse projeto pode ser favorecido por um sistema dutoviário que está sendo implantado e deve proporcionar uma alternativa logística de menor custo e com baixíssima emissão de GEE. Tendo em vista esse contexto, esse artigo propõe o desenvolvimento de um modelo de programação linear para otimizar os fluxos de transporte de etanol com o objetivo de mensurar as emissões de CO2 geradas pelas operações de transporte de etanol, assim como, para avaliar o impacto decorrente da implantação desse projeto dutoviário na mitigação das emissões de CO2 e na redução do custo de transporte. Os resultados indicam que a implantação plena dessa alternativa logística apresenta potencial para reduzir em 14% as emissões de CO2 e gerar uma economia de R$ 136 milhões por ano, no custo de transporte de etanol. O ferramental desenvolvido contribui para avaliar o impacto econômico e a mitigação de GEE causada por novas infraestruturas de transporte.

Transport policies and infrastructure investments diverge across countries, but the actions to improve transportation performance and simultaneously to reduce its CO2 emissions have gained importance around the world. In Brazil, the infrastructure bottlenecks and the low productivity of transport have increasing freight costs and simultaneously the CO2 emissions. Aiming to reduce the impacts of the transport sector inefficiency the Federal Government announced a public-private partnership program to increase investment in new railways. We propose a dual-step procedure to evaluate the expected economic and environmental impacts lead to the inclusion of new railways to the transportation network: i) apply a Network Equilibrium Model to simulate the interregional transportation flows of Brazilian soybean and corn production and evaluate the benefits, measured in terms of reduced transportation costs and CO2 emissions, caused by the new railways; ii) use a cost-effective analysis to rank the investments in the railways according to their economic and environmental contributions. We found that the implementation of the Brazilian planned railways could reduce 17% the total freight cost and 20% the total CO2 emissions of corn and soybean transportation. Three railway projects presented important economic and environmental gains and showed be attractive to private funding.

Understanding the effects of water, energy, and food (WEF) consumption and production on socio-economic and environmental indicators has become a strategic issue for all countries, especially the developing ones, that depend on natural resources to promote economic growth. Our main objective with this study is to quantify and understand the interconnections (Nexus) of WEF production and consumption with regional economic growth and social development in Brazil. We use a multi input-output approach based on a Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) model to calculate efficiency indicators over time for various municipalities in Brazil. We assume that a high input-output efficiency level indicates that a certain municipality can reach larger output benefits with less WEF consumption. The time-based approach using the Malmquist Index model enables us determining whether cities’ WEF input-output efficiencies have been rising or declining over time. The time-spatial analysis is appropriate to indicate the level of interdependence between WEF-Nexus and the demographic, economic, and environmental systems in Brazil. We expect that our results can help policymakers establishing regional and city-level policies that can benefit a more efficient use of WEF resources.

Goal: To evaluate the potential of strategies to promote green corridors of soybean exports from Brazil to China. Design / Methodology / Approach: The best transportation corridors are evaluated in terms of minimum transportation cost and minimum CO2 emissions in transport. This problem was modelled as a linear programming problem and was solved by GAMS. It involves transporting soybeans from the producing farms in the Brazilian Center-West to the main Brazilian export ports and, subsequently, to China, through the various logistical infrastructures available. Results: In general, strategies aimed to reduce CO2 emissions in the Brazilian soybean exports to China, and also promote the reduction of transport costs, as presented in the results of the different scenarios. Since the greatest impact on both indicators came from the use of Capesize ships, the study suggests that investments in port infrastructure to increase its vessel berthing capacity generate positive impacts, both in terms of lower transportation costs and CO2 emissions. Limitations of the investigation: The producing regions were divided in mesoregions. The road distance considered is between the centroid of the producing region to the destination. Practical implications: Especially in the scenarios of unrestricted transport infrastructure, the study suggests the configuration of optimum soybean flows, as well as the respective level of utilization of multimodal terminals. From the findings of the study, agents involved in the logistics of exporting soy to China can identify the investments in rail and port terminals necessary to a greener logistics. Originality / Value: This work will contribute to the literature in the Green Supply Chain Management field of study, especially in a Brazilian perspective.

Este artigo tem como principal objetivo mensurar as perdas físicas e econômicas observadas na cadeia de suprimentos das moageiras de trigo do Rio Grande do Sul (RS). A partir da aplicação de questionário com representativos agentes do setor, a cadeia logística do trigo no RS foi caracterizada e as perdas do produto em cada etapa da cadeia foram quantificadas. Para os fluxos de transporte característicos de mercado interno, as perdas representam 11,41% da quantidade total de trigo em grão oriundos das fazendas. Destacam-se, neste contexto, as perdas na colheita e na armazenagem junto às cooperativas (93,55% das perdas totais). A monetização de perdas físicas decorrentes totaliza um valor de R$ 119,4 milhões. Baseado nos resultados obtidos, são sugeridas estratégias para mitigação das perdas de trigo nos diferentes elos da cadeia logística. Palavras-chave: Cadeia logística. Perdas no pós-colheita. ResumoO objetivo deste trabalho é avaliar e quantificar o potencial de mitigação de CO2 no transporte rodoviário de cargas decorrente da adoção de medidas e tecnologias voltadas para promover (a) a redução do consumo de combustível, bem como (b) a substituição gradativa do diesel pelo biodiesel. Em cada caso, foi estimada a emissão do cenário base e, em seguida, foram feitas simulações que permitiram construir a curva de emissão em função de avanços tecnológicos voltados para aumentar a eficiência energética ou substituir diesel por biodiesel. Os principais parâmetros utilizados para mensurar as emissões dizem respeito à distância percorrida, quantidade de carga transportada e consumo de combustível. Foram coletados dados primários junto a diversas transportadoras, compondo uma amostra de 145 veículos. Os principais resultados indicam que um aumento de 0,5 km/l na eficiência energética da frota leva a uma redução de cerca de 20% nas emissões de GEE. Entretanto, o potencial de mitigação das emissões através do aumento do teor de biodiesel não é tão promissor, devido, em grande parte, à queda do rendimento do veículo e consequente aumento do consumo. Neste sentido, os resultados apontam que esforços que busquem reduzir consumo de combustível da frota podem contribuir de forma mais efetiva para redução das emissões de GEE que a substituição de percentuais cada vez maiores de diesel por biodiesel.

This study evaluates the impacts of Brazilian highway conditions on fuel consumption and, consequently, on carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. For the purpose of this study, highway conditions refer to the level of highway maintenance: the incidence of large potholes, large surface cracks, uneven sections, and debris. Primary computer collected data related to the fuel consumption of three types of trucks were analyzed. The data were derived from 88 trips taken over six routes, each route representative of one of two highway conditions: better or worse. Study results are initially presented for each type of truck being monitored. The results are then aggregated to approximate the entire Brazilian highway network. In all cases, results confirmed environmental benefits resulting from travel over the better routes. There was found to be an increase in energy efficiency from traveling better roads, which resulted in lower fuel consumption and lower CO2 emissions. Statistical analysis of the results suggests that, in general, fuel consumption data were significant at *P < 0.05, rejecting the null hypothesis that average fuel consumption from traveling the better routes is statistically equal to average fuel consumption from traveling the worse routes. Improved Brazilian road conditions would generate economic benefits, reduce dependency on and consumption of fossil fuels (due to the increase in energy efficiency), and reduce CO2 emissions. These findings may have additional relevancy if Brazil needs to reduce carbon dioxide emissions to reach future Kyoto Protocol's emissions targets, which should take effect in January 2013.

Devido à importância do modal rodoviário para a economia brasileira no que diz respeito à sua participação na matriz de transporte de cargas, à elevada participação no consumo de combustíveis fósseis (óleo diesel) e nas emissões de CO2, este artigo avalia se rodovias em melhores estados de conservação implicam benefícios econômicos e ambientais. Os benefícios econômicos disseram respeito à avaliação dos seguintes parâmetros: consumo de combustível, tempo de viagem e gasto com manutenção do veículo. Já os benefícios ambientais referiram-se às reduções das externalidades negativas resultantes da diminuição nas emissões de CO2. Foram realizadas coletas de dados primários relacionados ao desempenho observado em caminhões (dotados de computadores de bordo para auxiliar na coleta dos dados) em rodovias com diferentes condições de infra-estrutura. Num total de 20 viagens realizadas, foram observados o consumo de combustível e o perfil das velocidades em duas rotas em diferentes estados de conservação (Campo Grande a Santos e Rondonópolis a Campo Grande). Os resultados indicaram a existência de benefícios econômicos e ambientais para as rotas em melhor estado de conservação.
