The changes observed in the school context demand new practices and impose new challenges to the operational assistants that, due to their relevant role in the educational environment, must be prepared and endowed with knowledge and skills to conduct their profession in a fully useful way. This is only possible through the promotion of their training and capacitation in a real work context. Through the European project entitled “Innovative Plans to Combat School Failure” which was implemented in Portugal, we assess the impacts of a training-capacitation action directed to operational assistants and explore the dynamics and influences underlying the learning process put in practice in the schools of the county of Sintra. This assessment conducted by a higher education institution (Iscte-University Institute of Lisbon) mobilized a mixed methodology-survey and focus groups with operational assistants and interviews conducted to school directors. We verified that a training activity conducted in the real working context potentiates the performance of these professionals, namely in terms of autonomy and adaptation to different contexts and duties, conflict management and cooperation, whose effects reflected on the organizational dynamics of the school institutions of the county of Sintra.

During the international financial crisis, Portugal found itself in a very difficult and vulnerable socioeconomic situation that has led to an increase in social inequalities. This article seeks to understand two things: firstly, how much the impacts of the crisis contributed to a general perception that people's social position has gone backwards, compared to their pre-crisis situations; secondly, whether it is possible to link this generalized perception that living conditions have gone downhill to an increase in and diversification of collective action practices. The authors analyse data from a 2014 survey of 1,500 residents of the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, which they use to measure how far the level of collective action practices has increased and varied in accordance with a set of social inequality indicators, such as resource and educational inequalities.

Europe is currently a highly unequal social space. The marked inequalities we find today in Europe as a whole may seem unexpected given the convergence objectives the European institutions have set over the last half century. However, contrary to expectations, they are substantial and have troubling implications. This chapter briefly presents a set of contributions to the characterisation of the inequality structure that has arisen in today’s Europe. Like most of the important theoretical references on the subject in sociology, our analysis adopts a multidimensional concept of inequality, looking primarily at the dimensions linked to the distributional inequalities of economic and educational resources, and the categorical inequalities between nation states and between social classes.

O inquérito internacional European Social Survey (2012) é a referência empírica central.Palavras-chave: Desigualdades educativas; mobilidade social; Europa do Sul; contexto europeu ABSTRACT With the widespread expansion of educational processes in Europe, some approaches that have been proposed argue that the educational dimension has been weakened as a factor involved in social mobility processes and as a structural element in social opportunities and inequalities. This paper discusses these proposals, contradicting them through alternative theoretical positions and a solid empirical base. The developed analysis envisages educational inequalities and their impacts on social mobility and inequality in targeted manner in Southern Europe and in the European context. This perspective was also sustained by a comparison between countries and recognized over time (last 60 years). Some questions were developed, empirically sustained, particularly concerning the importance of socio-educational backgrounds in the socio-education and socio-occupational destinations and the identification of patterns of social fluidity and educational inequalities, drawing matches with different educational transitions in national terms. We used as central database the European Social Survey (2012).Keywords: Educational inequalities; social mobility; Southern Europe; European context

This article analyzes the dispositions towards collective action, especially in regards to the local and individual scales. We focus mainly on the plurality of the individual situations, paying attention to the role of the local contexts to the greater or lesser incorporation of aradical habitus. In depth interviews were done to 15 individuals belonging to nine households living in three municipalities of the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, from which were built profiles and sociological portraits which salient the relevance of socializations, sociability and the involvement in collective actors in the dispositions for the collective action.

The aim of this article is to present some contributions to the understanding of social inequality in Europe today. We analyse the distributional inequalities of economic and educational resources as well as the categorical inequalities between nation states and between social classes. The source of the empirical data was the European Social Survey 2012. We were able to calculate European income deciles, build a matrix of class-country segments, and analyse the intersections of this structural matrix with the distributions of income and schooling. The results reveal high degrees of distributional inequality in Europe. They also show the structural configurations assumed in Europe by the intersection of distributive and categorical inequalities.

This paper seeks to understand the way in which social capital resources are incorporated, appropriated and distributed by different social classes in Europe. Its main goal is to produce a conceptual framework by linking the concepts of social capital with the different theoretical assessments made by the sociology of social classes. We use multivariate analysis to work a set of quantitative indicators from the European Social Survey 2008 in order to assess the relationship between these concepts. Our methodological approach combines transnational levels, i.e., it is not an international comparison between European countries but an analysis of individual people and their belonging to social classes.
