With the prevalence of social media that promote interactivity among people, more organisations rely on Key Opinion Leader (KOL) to interact with potential customers in various social media for brand building. This study explores how KOL’s characteristics affect the KOL effectiveness and the outcome of brand image building of skincare products. We also examine the contingent conditions when KOL is more effective in brand image building based on the skincare consciousness of the consumer and whether the consumer is affected by his/her social groups. The knowledge transferred through this study reshape the management models in Enterprise Information Systems.

Purpose This study applies self-determination theory to investigate how motivations to participate in LinkedIn would influence a professional's intention to leave an organization for professional advancement (ILPA). Design/methodology/approach The authors randomly sampled 5810 professionals who are actively participating in LinkedIn for at least six months and collected 379 completed questionnaires. Findings This study examines the effect of motivation to participate in LinkedIn on ILPA. Perceived autonomy support, perceived competence support and perceived relatedness support have positive influences on intrinsic motivation. Introjected regulation is positively influenced by perceived autonomy and competence support but unaffected by perceived relatedness support. External regulation is positively influenced by perceived autonomy and competence support but has no relationship with perceived relatedness support. ILPA from using LinkedIn is positively influenced by intrinsic motivation, introjected and external regulations. Research limitations/implications Future research should consider other professional network sites as well as longitudinal research designs to address external validity and causality issues. Practical implications Organizations should understand that professional network sites play an important role for professional advancement. The motivations to participate in professional network sites are supports on autonomy and competence. For platform designers, it is vital to enhance supports on autonomy and competence to sustain users' participation in professional network sites. Originality/value This study extends the scope of self-determination theory to understand the motivations to participate in professional network sites, which will have impacts on professionals' ILPA.

Why would employees adopt bring your own device (BYOD)? Would employees feel risk-taking to perform their work by using their own devices? Would peer pressure and company policy help encourage their employees to BYOD and how? Using the Technology Threat Avoidance Theory (TTAT), we hypothesize the intention of adopting BYOD is due to the accessing of security policy by threat and coping appraisal. Moreover, we predict perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, social influence, organizational commitment and job security are essential for formulating the adoption intention. In this study, 450 random employees were surveyed on their adoption perception of BYOD in their respective companies. The results support most of our hypotheses. We uncover perceived cost and privacy protection within the TTAT framework reflect no significance while organizational commitment and job security posit the strongest influences on employees’ BYOD adoption intention. This finding suggested that in order to roll out a successful and sustainable adoption intention on BYOD, organizations must consider measurements to build up employees’ job security as well as generate a strong sense of organization commitment. Specifically, our analyses show adoption intention is also affected by gender, age, and education level.

The influence of electronic word of mouth (eWOM) has been heavily investigated in relation to online ratings. However, only a few studies examined the content of eWOM. From the perspective of the consideration sets model, consumers formulate an awareness set, a consideration set and a choice set before making a purchase. We argue that the formulation of these sets is influenced by eWOM based on its volume, valance and content relating to product attributes such as value for money, product sophistication and experiential feeling. In this study, the content of posts relating to Shure professional earphones in the online forum Mingo (www.mingo-hmw.com/forum) was captured and annotated. During the data collection period, Mingo was the sole online forum relating to professional earphones. Without much interference from other online forums, the circumstances of this study closely approximate a laboratory setting. In addition, we collected the actual sales, marketing costs, fault rates and number of retail stores selling the Shure professional earphones for 126 weeks. Our findings show that the weekly volume of posts, their relative number of positive (negative) comments, especially regarding value for money and sound quality, and those posts from the earlier week impinged strongly on weekly sales of Shure products. From the regression models, the explained variance in sales jumps from 0.236 to 0.732 due to the influence of eWOM.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effectiveness of mobile messaging for the purposes of information sharing and social networking based on the types of social ties involved. The authors identify two psychological traits in the model: perceived time shortages (TSs) and anxiety trait. These traits can influence individuals’ mobile-messaging usage by facilitating users’ connections to different social ties in modern urban life. Design/methodology/approach – The authors distributed questionnaires at random on the streets of certain densely populated areas in Hong Kong to young urbanites, who are the dominant users of technological social media. The authors collected 492 valid responses, which the authors analysed via multivariate regression analysis. Findings – Mobile messages are more effectively used to share information within strongly tied groups rather than weakly tied groups. However, there is little difference between weakly and strongly connected groups in terms of the perceived effectiveness of mobile messages used for social networking. Anxious people are more inclined to send mobile messages to individuals with whom they have weak ties, and people who perceived TSs send more mobile messages to individuals with whom they have strong ties. Research limitations/implications – The rapid nature of information and communication technology has enabled new “richer” forms of mobile media. For instance, WhatsApp allows people to attach images and other multimedia files to their messages, and WeChat provides a location-sharing service that enables users to meet new people based on their friendship preferences. Future studies should examine this trend. Originality/value – This study contributes to the literature by elaborating the mobile-messaging behaviour of urban citizens who are anxious and perceive TSs within strongly and weakly connected social groups.

Upon the technological advancement of production flexibility, supply chain agility, and customer behavioral tracking, many online businesses now develop their customization strategies. In this regard, this study proposes an integrative framework for customization of product information, transaction handling, product attribute, and sales’ service. We are interested in how these customizations affect customer satisfaction. From our web-based survey on a renowned online jewelry company in China, we collected 1383 responses from its customer database. Our findings showed that information, product and sales’ service customizations have significant influence on customer satisfaction. Moreover, ordinary members as compared with VIP members feel more satisfied once they receive customized services.

Software as a Service (SaaS), which offers the possibility to cover both core and non-core business operations of a company, has profoundly transformed traditional outsourcing approaches. As SaaS represents promising solutions for a variety of business processes, it is important to identify a theoretical framework to evaluate SaaS adoption for these two types of operations. We propose an integrative framework to evaluate SaaS adoption by including four perspectives–economic savings, strategic influences, management attitudes toward ownership and vendor’s service quality; and formulate hypotheses to predict the difference in SaaS adoption for core and non-core business operations. We validate our framework using data from 269 companies across different industries in Hong Kong. The results support the integrative framework. Perceived cost advantage has a positive influence on SaaS adoption for non-core business operations, whereas a gap in IT capabilities has a positive influence on SaaS adoption for core business operations. Furthermore, perceived service quality has a positive influence, and management attitude toward ownership and control has a negative influence on SaaS adoption for both types of operations.

The single machine scheduling problem with multi-rate-modifying activities under a time-dependent deterioration to minimize makespan is studied. After examining the characteristics of the problem, a number of properties and a lower bound are proposed. A branch and bound algorithm and a heuristic algorithm are used in the solution, and two special cases are also examined. The computational experiments show that, for the situation with a rate-modifying activity, the proposed branch and bound algorithm can solve situations with 50 jobs within a reasonable time, and the heuristic algorithm can obtain the near-optimal solution with an error percentage less than 0.053 in a very short time. In situations with multi-rate-modifying activities, the proposed branch and bound algorithm can solve the case with 15 jobs within a reasonable time, and the heuristic algorithm can obtain the near-optimal with an error percentage less than 0.070 in a very short time. The branch and bound algorithm and the heuristic algorithm are both shown to be efficient and effective.

The paper considers the due-date assignment problem with a non-linear deterioration in which the due dates are determined by the equal slack method. Here, the processing time of a job is defined by a non-linear function of total normal processing time of jobs in front of it in the sequence. The objective is to minimize the total tardiness penalties. According to the needs from the real world, the problem is divided into two cases, i.e., allowing with early jobs and no early jobs respectively. The related lemma, corollary and theorems for the problems are proposed and proved. At the same time, it shows that the problems in this paper can be solved in the polynomial times.

In the past few years consumers have enjoyed consuming video content on a growing number of devices including the traditional television, personal computers, mobile phone and tablets. Each device has its own technical attributes and associated consumption characteristics. This research examines the differential effects of user experience on engagement during video consumption in the mobile and desktop environments. We have experimented with different situations related to the genre, the sequence of playing, the extent of interruption, the timing of the interruption, and length of the video clips. Our model was quantitatively tested, with 270 users taking part in a between subject experiment. In the mobile environment, our results provide evidence that sensory experience is a significant factor for enjoyment and engagement with the video, while emotional response is not. The reverse is true for the desktop environment. Learning curve factors work differently in the two environments. User enjoyment and engagement are significantly moderated by learning curve factors in the mobile environment only. The result is robust as it is true for both previous learning (usage experience with the device), and on-the-go experience (sequencing of video clips). Attention span only affects engagement and enjoyment in the desktop environment. Outside interruption only affects engagement and enjoyment in the mobile environment. Our findings can inform commercial practices on the video design and user interface, and also enhance our understanding of the contextual dependency of the theoretical concept of engagement in mobile entertainment.Department of Management and MarketingDepartment of Industrial and Systems Engineerin

The aircraft ground service is a key ring to guarantee flight safety and normal operation. In the case of the traveling time of service crew from one aircraft parking place to another to be nonignorable, the scheduling optimization problem of ground service can be described as a vehicle routing problem with time windows of multiply nonidentical vehicles. To solve the problem, we propose a genetic algorithm with a hybrid encoding scheme. The encoding scheme describes the bit of a chromosome as a positive real number. Its integer part stands for the assigned crew of a flight and its decimal part for the position in job sequence by percent. The encoding scheme integrates assignment and sequence information in one number. Thus, it can be conveniently processed by all genetic operations of crossover, mutation, selection, and reproduction. A greedy heuristic is embedded as the sequencing initialization and reinitialization tool in the genetic algorithm procedure. The genetic algorithm is used to solve a lot of examples from a practical aircraft service company. The achieved results show that the algorithm is efficient.

Purpose: Given the increasing influence and importance of professionals in modern society, this study aims to investigate the influence of organizational commitment and professional commitment on professionals' intention to leave their organizations for professional advancement (ILPA). Design/methodology/approach: A total of 500 members of a large Hong Kong association of computer specialists were drawn randomly from the membership list. E-mails were sent directly to those 500 members through a web-based survey, which is an effective way to collect confidential information and potentially reduced the resistance due to the survey sensitivity. After two follow-ups via e-mail, a total of 265 responses were collected with a response rate of 53 percent. Findings: The study found that organizational affective commitment (OAC) would be more effective for reducing ILPA. For the interactions between different commitment components, there is a substitution effect of professional affective commitment (PAC) and professional continuance component (PCC) toward their impacts on ILPA. Research limitations/implications: The findings would be explained by the self-justification process due to cognitive dissonance on the professional's continuance commitment and his/her affective commitment in an organization. Moreover, there would be a complementary relationship between organizational and professional commitment. Originality/value: This study would answer the question on how to effectively avoid a professional leaving an organization.Department of Management and Marketin

E-Learning tools have profoundly transformed modern pedagogical approaches. Vendors provide different types of systems, such as self-paced (SP) and instructor–student interactive (ISI) e-Learning tools. Although both types of tools represent promising solutions to facilitate the learning process, it is important to theoretically identify a framework to evaluate the success of these tools and assess whether one type of tool is more effective than another. Toward this end, we (1) propose a model to evaluate e-Learning tools’ success by extending and contextualizing Seddon’s information systems (IS) success model for the e-Learning environment and (2) formulate four hypotheses to predict the differences in the success factors between SP and ISI tools. We test the model and hypotheses using data from 783 students across seven higher education institutions in Hong Kong. The results support the proposed e-Learning tool success model and three of the four hypotheses. ISI tools outperform SP tools in terms of system quality, perceived usefulness, satisfaction, and learning outcome.

Small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are facing great challenges in their information systems (IS) outsourcing relationship management, especially with customized software outsourcing under conditions of technological uncertainty and transaction-specific investments. The problem may be even critical for Chinese SMEs in emerging economies characterized by institutional instability. This article draws on multiple theories to examine antecedents and consequences of the effectiveness of three important interorganizational governance mechanisms, namely, contractual-based and relational-based governance and vendor-specific investments. The results of a survey on 83 software outsourcing projects indicate some interesting patterns that Chinese SMEs use to manage their outsourcing relationships. We found that contractual governance is found to be the only effective mechanism when the outsourcing firm (client) perceives technological uncertainty. On the other hand, with the transaction-specific investments, relational governance, and reciprocal-specific investments by IS vendor would be preferred as effective mechanisms by the outsourcing firm. Our analyses also show that Chinese SMEs in emerging economies would rely on multiple governance mechanisms to enhance outsourcing success. Overall, the findings are in line with the studies stressing the importance of building partnership-style relationships and seeking reciprocal actions in sourcing exchanges.

Why would people use Short Message Service (SMS) to say something they would not say in person? There is a trend that SMS is becoming more and more popular because it facilitates more extended modes of communications. Using technology acceptance model, we hypothesize the attitude of SMS would be influenced by its perceived effectiveness for communications, perceived ease of use, and subjective norm. Besides the special aspects of communications, conflict avoidance and privacy protection will enforce the impact of perceived effectiveness of SMS for communication. We investigated 953 SMS users and the results support most of our hypotheses. Furthermore, our analyses also show there are differences between females and males on the influence mechanism behind their attitude towards SMS.Department of Management and Marketin
