The ceramic materials industry has vast potential for use of waste from industrial processes, such as iron mining tailings. The aim of this study was to test technological use of tailings samples from the dam rupture of the Samarco S.A. Company in 2015 to produce structural ceramics. Sedimentation and flotation processes were used to improve their characteristics, analyzing their chemical and mineralogical composition and granulometry. We produced 48 samples with a mixture of soil and residues in proportions of 10, 20, and 30 wt%, with sintering at 950 °C. The results showed that co-processing of iron mining tailings can be considered viable for improving certain aspects of some technological properties. The maximum amount of residue used was 30 wt% for any of the fractions used, as above this concentration the specimens lose important characteristics.

Os espectros Mössbauer mostraram que os filmes pictóricos das pinturas vermelhas contêm hematita e que cada tonalidade diferente apresenta uma assinatura espectral Mössbauer específica.RUPESTRIAN PAINTINGS FROM THE LETREIRO DA PEDRA RISCADA ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE: Micromorphology, Chemical Composition and Ferruginous Species of the Pictorial FilmsABSTRACTIn this work, the chemical composition and ferruginous species of pictorial films of rupestrian paintings from the Letreiro da Pedra Riscada archaeological site (Domingos Mourão, Piauí, Brazil) were investigated by X-ray fluorescence and Mössbauer spectroscopy and the micromorphology was examined under stereomicroscope. Physical examinations has shown that red or yellow pictorial films appear scattered on the uneven surface of the sandstone support, usually with the accumulated paint in deeper or lesser cavities, areas in that the corresponding coloration intensifies. The chemical composition showed a high proportion of iron in the pictorial films, compared to that found in the rocky substrate, and pointed out that the mineral salts are attacking the archaeological paints and removing the iron. The Mössbauer spectra have shown that the pictorial films of the red paintings contain hematite and that each different tonality has a specific Mössbauer spectral signature. Keywords: Iron oxides; Mössbauer spectroscopy; Archaeometry

The AC magnetically induced heating characteristics of uncoated and silica-coated magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles dispersed in liquids of different viscosities were investigated. The aim was to synthesize and prepare uncoated and silica-coated nanoparticles of maghemite, and evaluate their ability to hyperthermically dissipate heat under an applied AC magnetic field when they are dispersed in liquids of different viscosities. A conceptual approach on the relative contributions of the Néel and the Brownian relaxation mechanisms to the hyperthermic heating of these suspensions is proposed. The microstructure, the physical and chemical properties of the uncoated and silica-coated nanoparticles were assessed by transmission electron microscopy; powder X-ray diffraction; 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy; Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy; zeta potential measurements; and conventional chemical analysis. Results of the Rietveld refinement of the XRD patterns and analysis of the collected Mössbauer data are well consistent with maghemite as being the only iron oxide phase. The mean diameters of the uncoated nanoparticles increased from ~6 to 7 nm, to 35 and 78 nm, for added silica coating amounts varying from 1 to 6-fold, respectively. Zeta potential measurements confirmed the efficiency of the nanoparticles sol-gel coating method. When dispersed in low viscosity media (water, triethanolamine, ethylene glycol), uncoated nanoparticles efficiently release heat via both Néel and Brown relaxation mechanisms under an applied oscillating magnetic field, achieving a temperature raise of approximately 21 °C. The silica layers tend to inhibit the Brownian motion of coated particles, making heat dissipation to be preferentially governed by the Néel relaxation of the magnetization vector. This leads to modest rises in temperature of 9 °C when they are dispersed in water or in the PVC (polyvinyl chloride). SAR tests indicate that the maghemite-silica core-shell systems might be useful for advanced technologies in medical practices based on local hyperthermia, particularly in oncology.

Titanate nano-heterostructures have been prepared by a microwave-assisted hydrothermal method and then modified by replacing the Na+ ions present in the outer walls of the nanotubes (NT) by Fe3+ ions. The structural and magnetic properties of the product have been investigated in detail. It was observed that the titanate nanostructures are decorated with anatase (An) nanoparticles of size ca. 2 nm, producing [email protected] nano-heterostructures and that substitution with Fe3+ generates β-FeOOH and α-Fe2O3 phases, furnishing [email protected] HAADF-STEM analysis revealed a complex nano-heterostructure with nanoparticles of β-FeOOH of size ca. 5 nm in the interlayer spaces and nanoparticles of α-Fe2O3 of size ca. 10–12 nm on the outer walls. Magnetic measurements at 300 K showed a ferromagnetic contribution in combination with a paramagnetic component for both the pristine and ion-exchanged samples. To the best of our knowledge, such iron-exchanged TiNT nano-heterostructures with α-Fe2O3 and β-FeOOH phases have not been reported previously. The key feature of this work is that ion-exchange of titanate nanotubes with iron ions generates a complex nano-heterostructure, the optical and magnetic properties of which are systematically modified. As titanate nanotubes and their derivatives are well known for their low toxicity and good biocompatibility, the additional magnetic behavior shown by the nanostructures reported here may make them potentially applicable in biomagnetic sensing.

It is reported an innovative though still exploratory study devoted to characterizing their structure and evaluating the response of zeolite-magnetite composites as adsorbing materials to remove Hg2+ from water. The zeolite material collected from a sampling site in Parral, Chile, was identified and structurally characterized as containing mordenite with crystallographic orthorhombic unit cell dimensions a = 18.060(1) Å; b = 20.429(2) Å and c = 7.5091(7) Å. From Mössbauer data, two paramagnetic ferric iron sites occur in its structure. This zeolite, a sample of synthetic magnetite and their two-component composites were used as adsorbers to sequester Hg2+ dissolved in water. The adsorption rate was found to reach a steady state of nearly constant Hg concentrations corresponding to 26.2; 22.1; 20.6; 17.4 and 16.7 mg Hg per g adsorber, between 24 h and 72 h reaction, for the samples zeolite only, for the composites zeolite:magnetite mass ratio 10:1; 5:1; 1:1 and for the magnetite only, respectively. These corresponding maximum adsorption capacities reduced the initial concentration of Hg2+ in water from 700 mg L−1 to an equilibrium concentration of 0; 110; 150; 240 and 250 mg L−1, respectively. Although the composites showed a lower adsorption capacity of Hg than did the sole zeolite (zeol sample), the composites contained magnetic particles, which allow the adsorbing systems to be readily removed from the aqueous medium, with a magnetic field. These combined characteristic point to the remarkable potential of such materials, particularly the mag-zeol-2, to be used to remediate natural bodies of water contaminated with Hg.

OF OCHRES AND THE SEARCH FOR ARCHAEOLOGICAL CORRELATIONS WITH THE PIGMENTS OF RUPESTRIAN PAINTINGS OF THE SITE PEDRA DO CANTAGALO IABSTRACTThis archaeometric work was devoted to the chemical-mineralogical characterization of red and yellow ochres of the archaeological site Pedra do Cantagalo I, Piripiri, Piauí. Field surveys were made in the neighboring of the rocky shelter, seeking for any apparent evidence signalizing the mineral source of such mineral pigments. The chemicalmineralogical composition of the ochres was correlated with corresponding data obtained from analyzing the nature of the minerals from the surrounding deposits and from the paint layers of the rupestrian paintings on the decorated sandstone surfaces of this archaeological site. The results for the ochres fairly show clear evidence that the ferruginous phases, as well as aluminum-containing minerals, were prepared for the enrichment in iron oxides, apparently at the expense of the removal of silicate minerals, from the material withdrawn from the deposits. Keywords: Ochres; Mössbauer spectroscopy; Archaeometry.

TMAOH-dispersed nanoparticles of magnetite were first prepared through the reduction–precipitation of ferric chloride with Na2SO3 and NH4OH. The TMAOH-dispersed (Fe3O4) magnetic nanoparticles were then surface-coated with poly(L-co-D,L lactic acid-co-trimethylene carbonate) (PLDLA-co-TMC) to obtain the corresponding hybrid system (Fe3O4/TMAOH/PLDLA-co-TMC). Samples of so prepared material were analyzed by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), magnetization measurements up to 2.5 T, and Mössbauer spectroscopy. Results indicate that this magnetic iron oxide soon after the synthesis is structurally close enough to a typically pure stoichiometric magnetite. FTIR data support clears evidences confirming the efficiency of the solvent displacement method to assure coating the TMAOH-dispersed (Fe3O4) magnetic nanoparticles with the terpolymer while preserves the main chemical structural characteristic of the nanosized magnetite.

The rural area from the municipality of Piripiri, in the state of Piauí, Northeastern Brazil, is known to contain several archaeological sites, which are essentially sandstone shelters and walls decorated with rupestrian paintings and engravings. Located in the Corrente stream margins, predominantly in the villages known as Buriti dos Cavalos, Cadoz Velho, and Jardim, the rocky monuments present high density of prehistoric inscriptions. The rupestrian paintings mainly represent abstract figures, spear throwers, human handprints, anthropomorphs and zoomorphs, in different hues of red, but also in yellow, black, gray (including greenish-gray), green-olive, white, pink, wine, dark-purple and orangish. Besides the polychromy, the ancient inscriptions exhibit frequent overlaps and recurrences of the motifs represented in the rocky supports. Eight archaeological sites are briefly presented and their main features are described.

Ferrimagnetic Fe-oxides are important soil components, which are present in most of the agricultural soils of Brazil. Distinction, origin, and assessment of the influence of these minerals on magnetism and geochemistry is a challenge for mineralogists. This study aimed to characterize mineralogically Fe-rich Rhodic Oxisols ( Latossolos Vermelhos ) originating from several mafic rocks in Brazil, and assess the implications on their magnetic and geochemical properties. We present results on magnetic measurements, chemical dissolutions, X-ray diffractometry, Rietveld refinement, Raman, and Mössbauer spectroscopies of Fe-rich Rhodic Oxisols originating from several mafic rocks. They show that magnetite is inherited from the parent material, and its oxidation leads to the formation of maghemite. In the coarse fractions (sand and silt), magnetite and maghemite coexist and are interstratified with hematite, confirmed by Raman spectroscopy. This limited the distinction between magnetite and maghemite by Mössbauer spectroscopy. Maghemite represents the only ferrimagnetic Fe oxide in the clay fraction. The influence of both ferrimagnetic minerals, magnetite and maghemite, on magnetic susceptibility and total content of trace elements is determined by the pedogenic development, even among highly weathered soils. In general, the coarse fractions contribute with most of the total trace element contents, while the clay fraction contributes to trace elements availability and magnetic susceptibility of soils.

It consists of a sandstone shelter decorated with more than 1,950 rupestrian paintings representing abstract figures, spear-throwers, human handprints, and anthropomorphic and zoomorphic figures in polychromatic patterns. In addition to the high density of prehistoric inscriptions and polychrome paintings, this site also stands out due to the recurrence of painted motifs and to the overlapping of the paintings. Ceramic materials, lithics, and ochres were found in the sediments. Residual charcoals found in remnants of well-structured hearths, as recently evidenced from excavations in this shelter were AMS (accelerator mass spectrometry) 14C-dated as being from 1,180 ± 30 years before present; in stratigraphy, ceramic materials, lithics, and red and yellow ochres were also evidenced. In this paper, the field and laboratory analytical strategies used in the investigation of this important archaeological site are reports as well as the evidence of prehistoric human activity contained within or collected from the site. The investigative techniques included physical examinations of the site, chemical-mineralogical characterization of the materials, monitoring of the environmental conditions and prospections in nearby areas.

The archaeological site Salão dos Índios is located in the municipality of Castelo do Piauí, Brazil. The site is geographically part of a larger concentration of several archaeological sites of similar rupestrian graphical characteristics, including non-figurative paintings represented in a variety of colors. The work essentially devoted to identifying the mineralogical features of the pigments from this Salão dos Índios archaeological site is reported, basing on results from microscopic examinations and from physical and chemical analyses by electronically- and X ray-induced energy dispersive spectroscopies, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction and 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy. The way by which the prehistorical painting pigments were prepared and applied over the rock wall was auxiliary investigated by examining samples under binocular lenses. Results reveal that the pigments were primarily prepared in the liquid or paste form, using iron-rich clayey materials. The Mössbauer data obtained for three samples of reddish rupestrian paintings showed that the dominant iron oxide in the pigment is hematite (αFe2O3). The range of red hues of these rupestrian paintings can be explained by the different proportions of hematite that make up the layers of these prehistoric paints, with different mean particle sizes, reflecting fractions of particles undergoing different degrees of collective magnetic excitations as it can be drawn from the Mössbauer subspectra. Other iron-bearing species rendering spectral doublets were also observed, certainly due to superparamagnetic iron (oxyhydr)oxides (likely including some goethite) in very small particles or paramagnetic iron in the crystalline structure of phyllosilicates.

If suitably prepared, hematite (αFe2O3)-based materials may be effective photocatalysts under visible light. Doping hematite with cations is assumed to improve the chemical photocatalyst performance of hematite. To check for these effects, the catalytic efficiency under visible radiation of the pure, Co-, Ni-, Cu-, or Zn-doped nanosized hematite samples was tested on the degradation of the indigo carmine dye, as a model molecule to simulate a generic organic substrate. These semiconductors with photocatalyst activity were first characterized by powder X-ray diffractometry, Mössbauer spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and by energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence. The most efficient photocalysts for the indigo carmine dye degradation were the Cu- and Zn-doped hematite samples. The relatively higher photocatalytic activity of these two samples are interpreted as being due to their relatively higher ability, among the tested semiconductors, to absorb the visible light, efficient charge separation and e−-transference.

The archaeological site Manantial Solís is located on shores of the Cardiel Lake, Santa Cruz Province, Patagonia, Argentina. The main characteristic of this site is the occurrence of 251 rupestrian paintings, namely abstract figures, anthropomorphic and zoomorphic motifs, painted in different hues of red, but also in yellow, orange, pink, violet and white; these paintings are often formed by overlapping pictorial motifs. The basaltic rock-wall supporting these graphisms has been naturally degraded and, as a consequence, covered with saline efflorescence. The chemical and mineralogical analyses of a micro-sample from a red rupestrian painting were made in the laboratory by (i) energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence; (ii) CHN elemental analysis and (iii) 57Fe transmission Mössbauer spectroscopy at 298 K and 110 K, in an effort to identify the main iron-bearing minerals composing the painting pigments. The stratigraphy of the paint layer was investigated on a polished cross-section. From the Mössbauer spectra of this red painting, two sextets assignable to hematite (α Fe2O3) were identified. The Fe3+ central doublet is assumed to be due to superparamagnetic phases, more likely as iron (oxyhydr)oxides (likely including some goethite, α FeOOH) in very small particles and paramagnetic iron in the crystalline structure of aluminosilicates. The Fe2+ doublet was interpreted as being due to the basalt rock support of this prehistoric painting.
