In this paper, a multimode design method is proposed for motor design under multiple operation conditions. Based on the driving cycles in electric vehicles, five typical operation conditions and the corresponding five driving modes are determined for the multimode design. To investigate the method conveniently, a flux controllable stator permanent magnet (SPM) memory motor is selected and taken as a design example. In the design process, by using the sensitivity analysis method, the significance of the parameters in various driving modes are evaluated effectively. Based on the motor driving demands, the whole optimization design is divided into three steps, where different optimization method is applied in each step. To verify the feasibility of the multimode design method, the operation performances of the motor in different driving modes are investigated in detail. Finally, a prototype motor is built and tested. Both the simulation and experimental results reveal that the proposed design method can offer an effective design optimization for the flux-controllable SPM memory motor, where multimode operations are indispensable.

An active disturbance rejection control (ADRC) controller using phase-locking loop observer (PLLO) is proposed in this paper to improve the disturbance rejection property of speed control system. Firstly, to simplify the comparison with other controllers, a universal speed controller design method based on disturbance estimation is employed, and a unified expression for different controllers is presented. Then, several common speed controllers are compared with each other, and two PLLO based ADRC controllers are presented. After that, considering the variations of load inertia, robustness of the proposed ADRC system to inertia variation is analysed. Finally, to improve the tracking performance for sinusoidal speed-reference, an adaptive speed control system using identified inertia is presented. Simulation and experimental results verified the effectiveness of the proposed method.

This paper investigates a novel 3-phase doubly salient permanent magnet (DSPM) motor. Because of the adoption of ⊓-shaped stator iron core segments, the asymmetrical magnetic circuit among different phases occurring in conventional DSPM motors with E-shaped stator iron core segments can be avoided, so that balanced and sinusoidal 3-phase PM flux linkage and no-load EMF can be achieved. Firstly, based on a 12/7 stator/rotor pole combination, the operation principle of ⊓-core DSPM motor is discussed using the least magnetic reluctance principle. Then the general airgap field modulation theory (AFMT) is extended to the ⊓-core DSPM motor for explaining its operation principle further and armature winding connection. The finite element analysis is used to validate theoretical analysis, as well as to calculate its electromagnetic performances. The results show that the 12/7-pole ⊓-core DSPM motor possesses higher average torque output capability and lower torque ripple compared with the 12/8-pole E-core counterpart. Finally, a 12/7-pole ⊓-core DSPM motor is built and tested so as to experimentally verify the theoretical analysis.

This tutorial paper presents the mathematics behind the widely observed air-gap field modulation phenomena in electrical machines and derives the duality between electrical machines and switching converters. A bibliometric analysis of the existing research on various machine types is presented to show the historical development of electrical machines from the perspective of the number of publications, showing the necessity and urgency of unifying the analysis of operating principles/torque production mechanisms before the development of the general air-gap field modulation theory in 2017. The theoretical framework and its applications are reviewed. Detailed examples of how to use the developed theory to analyze the operating principle/torque production, conduct the quantitative analysis of parameters and basic performance, and make innovations from topologies of typical electrical machines are also included for verification as well as self-study.

This article proposes a new partitioned stator hybrid excited (PS-HE) machine with dc-biased sinusoidal current. On the inner stator, the consequent pole permanent magnets (PMs) are employed as the PM excitation. On the outer stator, a set of integrated dual three-phase winding is adopted to produce the wound and armature fields at the same time by injecting the sinusoidal current with dc bias. So, the flexible flux regulation can be realized by controlling the dc bias component. The rotor composed of segmented iron cores is sandwiched between two stators. By employing the air-gap field modulation theory, the air-gap magnetic field harmonics are analyzed to explain the operating and flux regulation principle. Furthermore, a design optimization and the electromagnetic performances of the proposed machine are investigated by finite element analysis. When compared with the existing series and parallel PS-HE machines, the proposed machine can avoid the disadvantage of low torque density of PARALLEL HE machine, and it can solve the problem of the poor flux regulation ability of series HE machine as well, which is mainly contributed by the reasonable space allocation of PMs and field winding excitations. Finally, a prototype is built and tested to verify the theoretical analyses.

In this paper, a new linear primary permanent magnet vernier (LPPMV) machine is developed for direct‐drive wave energy conversion. Owing to the magnetic gearing effect, the LPPMV machine possesses the advantages of high thrust force and low speed motion. After describing the machine structure, the operation principle of the machine is analysed and compared using two methods, namely, the magnetic gearing principle and the straightforward magnetic path. Then the characteristics are analysed by using the finite element method. Considering the unbalance of the no‐load flux linkage and the inductance among the three phases, the mathematical model of the proposed machine is established, which is significantly different to that of the traditional permanent magnet machine. Finally, the machine is prototyped and tested so as to experimentally verify the theoretical analysis.
