The large-scale accumulation and pollution of solid mining waste is an urgent issue. Coal gangue is a prominent type of solid waste, and shows promise for use in high value-added products due to its content of many important compounds, including SiO2 and Al2O3. This study proposed the preparation of highly porous ceramics from coal gangue, coal slime, and coconut palm fibers. The ceramics were produced at a sintering temperature of 950°C with a fiber content of 6 wt%, which led to the formation of porous ceramics with a porosity of 66.93%, volume density of 1.0329 g/cm3 , compressive strength of 1.1025 MPa, and thermal conductivity is 0.3919 K(W/mk). A finite element model of the porous ceramics was established using the Abaqus module in ANSYS software, where the stress distribution and compressive strength were simulated. Further, the relationship between porosity and compressive strength was analyzed. The thermal properties of the porous ceramics were analyzed using the Fluent module, where the simulated changes in porosity under various sintering temperatures were consistent with the experimental data. The preparation of this highly porous ceramic from solid waste coal gangue shows promise for the minimizing the impact of waste gas and wastewater pollution in the future.

With the advancement of industrial production and urban modernization, pollution from heavy metal ions and the accumulation of solid waste have become critical global environmental challenges. Establishing an effective recycling system for solid waste and removing heavy metals from wastewater is essential. Coal gangue was used in this study as the primary material for the synthesis of a fully coal gangue-based phosphorus-silicon-aluminum (SAPO-5) molecular sieve through a hydrothermal process. The SAPO-5 molecular sieve was characterized through several methods, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), BET surface analysis, Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), to examine its mineral phases, microstructure, pore characteristics, and material structure. Adsorption performance towards wastewater with Cd2+ and Pb2+ ions was investigated. It was found that the adsorption processes of these ions are well described by both the pseudo-second-order model and the Langmuir isotherm. According to the Langmuir model, the coal gangue-based SAPO-5 molecular sieve exhibited maximum adsorption capacities of 93.63 mg·g−1 for Cd2+ and 157.73 mg·g−1 for Pb2+. After five cycles, the SAPO-5 molecular sieve retained strong stability in adsorbing Cd2+ and Pb2+, with residual adsorption capacities of 77.03 mg·g−1 for Cd2+ and 138.21 mg·g−1 for Pb2+. The excellent adsorption performance of the fully solid waste coal gangue-based SAPO-5 molecular sieve is mainly attributed to its mesoporous channel effects, the complexation of -OH functional groups, and electrostatic attraction.

Composite materials that combine the unique properties of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) can give rise to novel applications. Here, ZIF-8/CNT composites were successfully prepared with and without the addition of an agent template. The size of the ZIF-8 crystals in the composite materials was controlled by varying the template, feeding order, and concentration of reactants. Thus, ZIF-8 crystals with a wide variety of sizes (from nano- to micrometer size, which is range that differs by a factor of 10) were obtained, depending on the conditions. This size-controllable synthesis of ZIF-8 was achieved by modifying the number of nucleation sites on the CNTs, as revealed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This work provides an efficient method for preparing ZIF-8/CNT composites with controllable size and can pave the way for the synthesis of other metal-organic framework (MOF)/CNT composite materials.

The resource and large-scale utilization of waste ceramic materials, magnesium slag, and coal gangue are one of the important ways for the sustainable development in metallurgy, coal, and other related enterprises. In this paper, waste ceramic materials were used as aggregates; coal gangue and magnesium slag were used as mixed binder; and the all solid-waste-based permeable bricks with excellent performance were prepared by forming pressure at 5 MPa. The mechanical properties and water permeability of the all-solid-waste-based permeable bricks were evaluated. The results proved that the porous channel of permeable brick is mainly composed of waste ceramic materials with a particle size of 2–3 mm. Pore structures below 200 μm were mainly composed of fine aggregate and mixed binder. Using 60% coarse aggregate, 20% fine aggregate, 10% coal gangue, and 10% magnesium slag as raw materials, the all-solid-waste-based permeable bricks were obtained by pressing at 6 MPa and sintering at 1200 °C, which exhibited the best performance, and its water permeability, compressive strength, and apparent porosity were 1.56 × 10−2 cm/s, 35.45 MPa, and 13.15%, respectively. Excellent water permeability, compressive strength, and apparent porosity of the all solid-waste-based permeable bricks were ascribed to the high content of connecting open pores, and closely adhesive force were ascribed to the porous microstructure constructed by the grading of waste ceramic materials and the tight conjoined points of the liquid phases in coal gangue and magnesium slag at a high sintering temperature.
