Background: Maize (Zea mays L.) is one of the most important food sources in the world and has been one of the main targets of plant genetics and phenotypic research for centuries. Observation and analysis of various morphological phenotypic traits during maize growth are essential for genetic and breeding study. The generally huge number of samples produce an enormous amount of high-resolution image data. While high throughput plant phenotyping platforms are increasingly used in maize breeding trials, there is a reasonable need for software tools that can automatically identify visual phenotypic features of maize plants and implement batch processing on image datasets. Results: On the boundary between computer vision and plant science, we utilize advanced deep learning methods based on convolutional neural networks to empower the workflow of maize phenotyping analysis. This paper presents Maize-IAS (Maize Image Analysis Software), an integrated application supporting one-click analysis of maize phenotype, embedding multiple functions: (I) Projection, (II) Color Analysis, (III) Internode length, (IV) Height, (V) Stem Diameter and (VI) Leaves Counting. Taking the RGB image of maize as input, the software provides a user-friendly graphical interaction interface and rapid calculation of multiple important phenotypic characteristics, including leaf sheath points detection and leaves segmentation. In function Leaves Counting, the mean and standard deviation of difference between prediction and ground truth are 1.60 and 1.625. Conclusion: The Maize-IAS is easy-to-use and demands neither professional knowledge of computer vision nor deep learning. All functions for batch processing are incorporated, enabling automated and labor-reduced tasks of recording, measurement and quantitative analysis of maize growth traits on a large dataset. We prove the efficiency and potential capability of our techniques and software to image-based plant research, which also demonstrates the feasibility and capability of AI technology implemented in agriculture and plant science.

Visual sign language recognition is an interesting and challenging problem. To create a discriminative representation, a Hierarchical Grassmann Covariance Matrix (HGCM) model is proposed for sign description. Furthermore, a Multi-Temporal Belief Propagation (MTBP) based segmentation approach is presented for continuous sequence spotting. Concretely speaking, a sign is represented by multiple covariance matrices, followed by evaluating and selecting their most significant singular vectors. These covariance matrices are transformed into a more compact and discriminative HGCM, which is formulated on the Grassmann Manifold. Continuous sign sequences can be recognized frame-by-frame using HGCM model, before being optimized by MTBP, which is a carefully designed graphic model. The proposed method is thoroughly evaluated on isolated and synthetic and real continuous sign datasets as well as on HDM05. Extensive experimental results convincingly show the effectiveness of our proposed framework.

As a quarantine disease with a rapid spread tendency in the context of climate change, accurate detection and location of pine wilt disease (PWD) at different infection stages is critical for maintaining forest health and being highly productivity. In recent years, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based optical remote-sensing images have provided new instruments for timely and accurate PWD monitoring. Numerous corresponding analysis algorithms have been proposed for UAV-based image classification, but their applicability of detecting different PWD infection stages has not yet been evaluated under a uniform conditions and criteria. This research aims to systematically assess the performance of multi-source images for detecting different PWD infection stages, analyze effective classification algorithms, and further analyze the validity of thermal images for early detection of PWD. In this study, PWD infection was divided into four stages: healthy, chlorosis, red and gray, and UAV-based hyperspectral (HSI), multispectral (MSI), and MSI with a thermal band (MSI&TIR) datasets were used as the data sources. Spectral analysis, support vector machine (SVM), random forest (RF), two- and three-dimensional convolutional network (2D- and 3D-CNN) algorithms were applied to these datasets to compare their classification abilities. The results were as follows: (I) The classification accuracy of the healthy, red, and gray stages using the MSI dataset was close to that obtained when using the MSI&TIR dataset with the same algorithms, whereas the HSI dataset displayed no obvious advantages. (II) The RF and 3D-CNN algorithms were the most accurate for all datasets (RF: overall accuracy = 94.26%, 3D-CNN: overall accuracy = 93.31%), while the spectral analysis method is also valid for the MSI&TIR dataset. (III) Thermal band displayed significant potential in detection of the chlorosis stage, and the MSI&TIR dataset displayed the best performance for detection of all infection stages. Considering this, we suggest that the MSI&TIR dataset can essentially satisfy PWD identification requirements at various stages, and the RF algorithm provides the best choice, especially in actual forest investigations. In addition, the performance of thermal imaging in the early monitoring of PWD is worthy of further investigation. These findings are expected to provide insight into future research and actual surveys regarding the selection of both remote sensing datasets and data analysis algorithms for detection requirements of different PWD infection stages to detect the disease earlier and prevent losses.
