The combustion of fossil fuels in the transport sector leads to an aggravation of the air quality along city roads and highways. Urban air quality is a serious problem nowadays as the number of vehicles increases on a yearly basis. With stricter Euro emission regulations, vehicle manufacturers are not meeting the imposed limits and are also disregarding the non-exhaust emissions. This paper highlights the relevance of non-exhaust emissions of passenger vehicles, both conventional (diesel and petrol) or electric vehicles (EV), on air quality levels in an urban environment in Belgium. An environmental life cycle assessment was carried out based on a real-world emission model for passenger cars and fuel refinery data. A cut-off was applied to the models to highlight what emissions, both from the refinery to the exhaust and electricity production for EV, do actually occur within Belgium’s borders. Results show that not much progress has been made from Euro 4 to 6 for conventional vehicles. Electric vehicles pose the best alternative solution as a more environmentally friendly means of transportation. The analysis results target policy makers with the intention that regulations and policies would be developed in the future and target the characterization of non-exhaust emissions from vehicles. These results indicate that EVs offer a valid solution for addressing the urban air quality issue and that non-exhaust emissions should be addressed in future regulatory steps as they dominate the impact spectrum.

Bone fractures often require fixation devices that frequently need to be surgically removed. These temporary implants and procedures leave the patient more prone to developing medical device-associated infections, and osteomyelitis associated with trauma is a challenging complication for orthopedists. In recent years, biodegradable materials have gained great importance as temporary medical implant devices, avoiding removal surgery. The purpose of this systematic review was to revise the literature regarding the use of biodegradable bone implants in fracture healing and its impact on the reduction of implant-associated infections. The systematic review followed the PRISMA guidelines and was conducted by searching published studies regarding the in vivo use of biodegradable bone fixation implants and its antibacterial activity. From a total of 667 references, 23 studies were included based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Biodegradable orthopedic implants of Mg-Cu, Mg-Zn, and Zn-Ag have shown antibacterial activity, especially in reducing infection burden by MRSA strains in vivo osteomyelitis models. Their ability to prevent and tackle implant-associated infections and to gradually degrade inside the body reduces the need for a second surgery for implant removal, with expectable gains regarding patients’ comfort. Further in vivo studies are mandatory to evaluate the efficiency of these antibacterial biodegradable materials.

There is a growing demand for data regarding the environmental and economic performance of additive manufacturing to establish the role of this technology in the future circular industrial economy. This paper provides a comparative analysis of direct energy deposition technology with conventional manufacturing, specifically iron casting, in the context of the repairing capabilities of the direct energy deposition system in a damaged glass bottle mold. Making use of already established methodologies for environmental and economic assessment, a life cycle assessment and a life cycle costing study was conducted on each scenario to provide a holistic perspective on the advantages and limitations of each system. With the gathered life cycle inventory, the main environmental impacts and life cycle costs were determined. The hybrid repairing scenario results show a reduction of the environmental impacts and life cycle costs by avoiding resource consumption in the production of a new mold, with underlying economic advantages identified beyond the calculated results. Through strategic integration based in life cycle approaches, it is concluded that direct energy deposition technology can play a key role in the sustainable development of tooling and manufacturing industries, especially in products with large dimensions, complex geometry, and customized design.
