Tourism seasonality is a major issue for regional and tourism development because it concerns the uneven distribution of tourism demand that tourism destinations have throughout the year. This phenomenon is complex and is related to sustainable tourism development to the extent that it concerns very resource-intensive tourism activities during the period of high demand, while it delivers a large volume of inactive tourism capital the rest period of the year. Within this context, this paper examines the relationship between tourism seasonality and saturation of the Greek prefectures, on data referring to overnight tourist stays for the period 1998–2018. The analysis builds on the Tourism Area Life Cycle (TALC) theory to measure tourism saturation and on operational research to compute an indicator capturing tourism seasonality, for the period being under consideration. The available variables are compared by using empirical and statistical techniques, which allow classifying the Greek prefectures into groups in accordance with their combined saturation and seasonal performance. The analysis provides insights about the relationship between tourism seasonality and saturation and allows distinguishing the geographical patterns emerging by the common consideration of these variables, for the case of Greece. The overall approach proposes a useful quantitative tool for tourism management and regional development because it allows considering in common the temporal and spatial dimensions of the tourism seasonality phenomenon.

Within the context that tourism-seasonality is a composite phenomenon described by temporal, geographical, and socio-economic aspects, this article develops a multilevel method for studying time patterns of tourism-seasonality in conjunction with its spatial dimension and socio-economic dimension. The study aims to classify the temporal patterns of seasonality into regional groups and to configure distinguishable seasonal profiles facilitating tourism policy and development. The study applies a multilevel pattern recognition approach incorporating time-series assessment, correlation, and complex network analysis based on community detection with the use of the modularity optimization algorithm, on data of overnight-stays recorded for the time-period 1998–2018. The analysis reveals four groups of seasonality, which are described by distinct seasonal, geographical, and socio-economic profiles. Overall, the analysis supports multidisciplinary and synthetic research in the modeling of tourism research and promotes complex network analysis in the study of socio-economic systems, by providing insights into the physical conceptualization that the community detection based on the modularity optimization algorithm can enjoy to the real-world applications.

This paper builds on Shift-Share analysis and aims to provide a methodological framework for studying the inequalities of Greek regions in the tourism industry. The method applied to yearly data of overnight stays, both for foreigners, and domestic visitors, for the periods 2003–2008, 2008–2013, 2013–2018, and results showing that disparities among Greek regions are generally very large for the tourism industry. The overall analysis is a useful tool for tourism management and regional policy. The paper advances Shift-Share analysis to be used as a tool of region classification, and it incorporates one-way ANOVA to examine the relationship between the inequalities concerns the policies from the last development law and tourism specialization in Greek regions.

The contribution of tourism to the local economy has proved particularly significant and led many researchers to study this multidimensional phenomenon. It is therefore appropriate to identify and analyze factors affecting tourism attractiveness, to propose the necessary policies. Since tourism plays an increasingly important role in the Greek economy, this manuscript aims to assess the tourism attractiveness of the Greek prefectures of foreign and domestic visitors. This is achieved by applying multiple linear regression and building on studentized deleted residuals and the diagnostics variables of leverage values and Cook’s distance. Prefectures with an unusual combination of values and prefectures that may have a high impact on the regression models are determined in accordance with the methodology. Overnight stays were used as the dependent variables, and measurable variables affecting tourist attractiveness were used as independent variables, according to international literature. At the end, the manuscript shows that there are major differences as regards tourism attractiveness at the level of Greek prefectures and highlights the need for developing strong policies and practices, with a view of improving regional tourism competitiveness.
