This paper presents an approach for designing parasitic loaded superdirective antenna arrays. The array current excitation coefficients calculated based on Yaghjian method are used with the array input impedance matrix to deduce the required loads for transforming the array to a parasitic one. The proposed method's practical limitations are studied via a parametric analysis on dipole-based arrays. It is also applied to design two- and three-element arrays based on an electrically small antenna (ESA). Simulation results show a very good agreement between the fully driven array's total directivity radiation pattern and the parasitic (loaded) array's one. Simulation results also show that the array end-fire total directivity is maximal at the design frequency. Measured results are in a very good agreement with the simulated ones.

A simple and innovative method for designing a spiral folded printed quadrifilar helix antenna (S-FPQHA) for dual-band operations is presented. The axial length of a conventional PQHA is miniaturized of about 43% by meandering and turning the helix arms into the form of square spirals. Parametric studies are performed to explore the performance improvements. Based on the studies a dual band antenna working in L1/L5 GPS application is realized with a good gain and a good circular polarization. Measured results are presented to validate the concept.

A compact microstrip rat-race hybrid with a 50% bandwidth employing space-filling curves is reported in this letter. The footprint of the proposed design occupies 31% of the area of the conventional similar design. Across the frequency bandwidth, the maximum amplitude unbalance is 0.5 dB, the phase variation is plusmn5deg , the isolation is better than 25 dB and the return loss is greater than 10 dB. Moreover, the circuit is planar, easy to design, and consists of only one layer without requiring plated thru holes, slots or bonding wires.

Closed-form formulas for calculating the radiation efficiency and bandwidth of patch antennas over lossy magneto-dielectric materials are proposed by using the cavity model. These expressions agree well with simulations. It is well known that the bandwidth of microstrip antennas is enhanced when the dielectric substrate is replaced by a magnetic one. Here, we confirm more generally that not only the bandwidth, but also the radiation efficiency, can be improved when the permeability (μr) is greater than the permittivity (εr).

A broadband printed quadrifilar helical antenna employing a novel compact feeding circuit is proposed in this paper. This antenna presents an excellent axial ratio over a wide beamwidth, with a 29% bandwidth. A specific feeding circuit based on an aperture-coupled transition and including two 90° surface mount hybrids has been designed to be integrated with the quadrifilar antenna. Over the bandwidth, the measured reflection coefficient of the antenna fed by the wideband compact circuit has been found to be equal to or lower than -12 dB and the maximum gain varies between 1.5 and 2.7 dBic from 1.18 to 1.58 GHz. The half-power beamwidth is 150°, with an axial ratio below 3 dB over this range. The compactness of the feeding circuit allows small element spacing in array arrangements.

A new feeding technique is proposed for the dual polarised broadband aperture-coupled printed antenna, to optimise the port decoupling and crosspolarisation level. Experimental results are compared with those of a more classical feeding technique.
