Ultrafine-grained (UFG) structure formation in Ti alloys, by severe plastic deformation (SPD) processing and enhancement of their mechanical properties, including fatigue properties, has been demonstrated in numerous studies in the past 20 years. The present overview analyzes the fatigue properties achieved to date in Ti alloys subjected to SPD. Such aspects are examined as the effect of a UFG structure on the fatigue behavior of commercially pure (CP) Ti, two-phase Ti alloys, using the popular Ti-6Al-4V alloy as an example, as well as on the kinetics and mechanisms of fatigue failure. The prospects and problems of the practical application of UFG Ti materials in medicine and aircraft engine construction are discussed.

In this work, the strength properties and impact toughness of the ultrafine-grained (UFG) Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy produced by severe plastic deformation (SPD) in combination with upsetting were studied, depending on the direction of crack propagation. In the billets processed by equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP), the presence of anisotropy of ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and ductility was observed, conditioned by the formation of a metallographic and crystallographic texture. At the same time, the ECAP-processed UFG alloy exhibited satisfactory values of impact toughness, ~0.42 MJ/m2. An additional upsetting of the ECAP-processed billet simulated the processes of shape forming/die forging and was accompanied by the development of recovery and recrystallization. This provided the “blurring” of texture and a reduction in the anisotropy of UTS and ductility, but a difference in impact toughness in several directions of fracture was still observed. It is shown that texture evolution during upsetting provided a significant increase in the crack propagation energy. The relationship between microstructure, texture and mechanical properties in different sections of the material under study is discussed.

The authors previously used the accumulative high-pressure torsion (ACC HPT) method for the first time on steel 316, β-Ti alloy, and bulk metallic glass vit105. On low-alloyed alloys, in particular, the zirconium alloy Zr-1%Nb, the new method was not used. This alloy has a tendency to α → ω phase transformations at using simple HPT. When using ACC HPT, the α → ω transformation can be influenced to a greater extent. This article studies the sliding effect and accumulation of shear strain in Zr-1%Nb alloy at various stages of high-pressure torsion (HPT). The degree of shear deformation at different stages of HPT was estimated. The influence of various high-pressure torsion conditions on the micro-hardness and phase composition by X-ray diffraction (XRD) of Zr-1%Nb was analyzed. It is shown that at high-pressure torsion revolutions of n = 2, anvils and the specimen significantly slip, which is a result of material strengthening. It was found that despite sliding, regular high-pressure torsion resulted in the high strengthening of Zr-1%Nb alloy (micro-hardness more than doubled), and after high-pressure torsion n = 10, up to 97% of the high-pressure ω-phase was formed in it (as in papers of other researchers). Accumulative high-pressure torsion deformation leads to the strongest transformation of the Zr-1%Nb structure and Hv and, therefore, to a higher real strain of the material due to composition by upsetting and torsion in strain cycles.

In this paper, the superplastic behavior of the two-phase titanium alloy VT6 with an ultrafine-grained (UFG) structure produced by equal-channel angular pressing is examined. The deformation of specimens with a UFG structure was performed by upsetting in a temperature range of 650–750 °C and strain rate range of 1 × 10−4–5 × 10−1 s−1. Under these conditions, an increased strain-rate sensitivity coefficient m was observed. The calculation of apparent activation energy showed values in a range of 160–200 kJ/mol while the superplastic flow of the VT6 alloy was occurring. When superplastic behavior (SPB) was impeded, the energy Q grew considerably, indicating a change in mechanism from grain-boundary sliding (GBS) to bulk diffusion. A change in temperature and strain rate influenced the development of superplastic flow and the balance of relaxation processes. Microstructural analysis shows that the UFG state is preserved at upsetting temperatures of 650 and 700 °C. A decrease in strain rate and/or an increase in upsetting temperature promoted a more active development of recrystallization and grain growth, as well as α2-phase formation. In a certain temperature and strain-rate range of the UFG VT6 alloy, α2-phase plates were found, the formation of which was controlled by diffusion. The effect of the α2-phase on the alloy’s mechanical behavior is discussed.

The study is aimed to virtually miniaturize medical implants produced of the biocompatible Ti with improved mechanical performance. The results on the simulation-driven design of medical implants fabricated of nanostructured commercially pure Ti with significantly enhanced mechanical properties are presented. The microstructure of initially coarse-grained Ti has been refined to ultrafine grain size by severe plastic deformation. The ultrafine-grained (UFG) Ti exhibits remarkably high static and cyclic strength, allowing to design new dental and surgical implants with miniaturized geometry. The possibilities to reduce the implant dimensions via virtual fatigue tests for the digital twins of two particular medical devices (a dental implant and a maxillofacial surgery plate) are explored with the help of finite element modeling. Additionally, the effect of variation in loading direction and the fixation methods for the tested implants are studied in order to investigate the sensitivity of the fatigue test results to the testing conditions. It is shown that the UFG materials are promising for the design of a new generation of medical products.

Grain reduction in a widely used Ti-6Al-4V alloy increases its endurance limit at room temperature. In this work, the behavior of the ultrafine-grained alloy under cyclic load at the temperature of 625 K is considered. Research was conducted to examine the fatigue life in a low-cycle area of the ultrafine-grained Ti-6Al-4V alloy produced by equal-channel angular pressing. Tensile and fatigue testing of the Ti-6Al-4V samples with coarse-grained (CG) and ultrafine-grained (UFG) structures were carried out at 293 and 625 K. The alloy demonstrated an enhanced strength and fatigue life at both temperatures. The representative features of the microstructural evolution and the fracture features in the UFG and CG alloys after fatigue tests are described in detail. The prospects for the use of the UFG Ti-6Al-4V alloy for engineering applications, such as in the production of critical gas-turbine engine parts, is discussed.
