Short Biography

Christina Diakaki is Adjunct Professor at the Hellenic Open University, Greece, and the European University Cyprus. She holds a Diploma in Production and Management Engineering (1991), and a PhD in Decision Systems and Operations Research (2000) from the Technical University of Crete, Greece, and a M.Sc. in Operations Management (1993) from the Victoria University of Manchester, U.K. Since 1991, she has participated in numerous projects sponsored by the European Commission, and other organizations, while since 1999, she has also been teaching at several universities. Her research interests include decision analysis and operations research, and systems’ analysis, modelling, simulation, and optimization with applications in the fields of transportation, energy and environment, and management. She serves as reviewer for several journals and conferences, she is Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the IET (Institute of Engineering and Technology) Intelligent Transport Systems journal and author/co-author of numerous research reports and papers in scientific and technical journals, and conference proceedings.

Improving energy efficiency in buildings is a major priority and challenge worldwide. The employed measures vary in nature, and the decision analyst, who is typically the architect, the engineer, or the building expert that has undertaken the task to suggest energy efficient solutions, faces a complex decision problem comprising numerous decision variables and multiple, usually competitive objectives. The solution of such multi-objective problems typically involves some sort of objectives aggregation, which reflects the preferences of the involved final decision maker that is the building’s user, occupant, and/or owner. The preferences elicitation, however, is a difficult task, and this paper aims to provide an interactive framework that will allow their consideration in a relatively easy manner. More specifically, a mathematical programming approach is proposed herein, which allows the elicitation and incorporation of the decision maker’s preferences in the decision model via the assessment of his/her utility function with the assistance of the multicriteria decision aid method UTASTAR. To study the feasibility and efficiency of the proposed approach, the case of a simple building is examined as an application example. The study results suggest that the proposed approach is capable of helping the decision analyst to suggest energy measures that satisfy, as much as possible, the decision maker’s preferences, without having to precisely prescribe them beforehand.

Day ahead electricity price forecasting is an extensively studied problem, and several statistical, intelligence-based, and other techniques have been proposed in literature to address it. However, the liberalization of the electricity market taking place during the last decades and the market coupling pursued within the European Union reshape the problem and create the need to confirm the effectiveness and/or revise existing methods and solution techniques, and/or invent new approaches. Given that complete integration has not achieved yet, both relevant data and studies of forecasting considering integration are still rather sparse. It has thus been the aim of this chapter to contribute to filling this gap by focusing on and studying the market integration effects in day ahead electricity price forecasting. To this end, an artificial neural network has been developed and used under several, with respect to inputs, forecasting scenarios considering the Italian electricity market.

Due to their limited access to resources, experts, and integrated business tools, the SMEs, which comprise the major part of the agro-food sector, struggle to start and develop their business in the highly competitive environment of our days. A recent survey suggested a need for support with respect to information, learning, networking and use of business tools. Such support can be offered via online tools and services, and has been the aim of the work presented in this chapter to search and provide a relevant review. Since such services and tools are typically provided by business support agents such as incubators, accelerators and innovation/entrepreneurship centers, a literature review of these agents and the business services they offer is also provided. The reviews reveal that there is a number of online platforms offering services and tools along the aforementioned four axes of interest, but no platform exists to fully cover all the expressed needs, being also specialized in the agro-food sector. This lack reveals a hidden potential for the sector, which can be elaborated through the development of online business platforms and tools tailored to its special requirements and needs.

TUC (Traffic-responsive Urban Control), a strategy aiming at providing coordinated traffic-responsive signal control in large-scale urban networks, has demonstrated high efficiency, especially under saturated conditions. Nevertheless, as TUC adopts common cycle times for all junctions at any time, some green time waste may occur at links with low or strongly varying alternative demand, which could be mitigated by enabling local actuation. It is the aim of this paper to investigate potential benefits to TUC performance emerging from such local actuation. Actuation may be performed in various ways: by relocating unused green time to stages serving high demand; or by preserving TUC-ordered offsets; or by combining as much as possible both of these features. To study and compare the performance and efficiency of these alternative ways to actuation under realistic traffic conditions, the AIMSUN microscopic simulation model of the road network of the city center of Chania, Greece, was used. Simulation investigations indicated relocating unused green time to stages serving high demand as the most promising way towards a TUC-coordinated locally-actuated control scheme. However, improvements over the TUC strategy by adopting this approach to actuation were moderate. As the simulation results may be due to the signal control setup at the particular network under study and/or the examined demand scenarios, further investigations, including tests with other road networks and/or demand patterns are necessary before reaching any final conclusions concerning the best way to locally actuate the TUC-decided signal control plans.

Recently, signal control strategies with decentralised logic have been developed to tackle the traffic congestion problems of urban road networks. Such strategies aim at network-wide traffic flow efficiency improvement via local actions, thus low design effort and infrastructure investment. This study presents, compares, and evaluates two such innovative approaches: the job scheduling algorithm comprising the local control component of the scalable urban traffic control (SURTRAC) system and the max- or back-pressure algorithm. The approaches are also compared against traffic-responsive urban control (TUC), a well-established strategy with centralised logic. Evaluation is based on the AIMSUN simulation model of the city centre of Chania, Greece. The study results indicate that the TUC and max-pressure retain performance independently of the prevailing traffic conditions, while also being computationally simpler than job scheduling. Both decentralised approaches require frequent (high-resolution) and relatively accurate measurements; on the other hand, TUC, although less demanding in this respect, calls for communication lines between the junction controllers and the central computer. Finally, compared with both decentralised approaches, the TUC provides a signal plan sequence with less excessive differences between each other, thus fewer disturbances to the common network users. Nevertheless, for more comprehensive conclusions, more investigations, including field trials, would be needed.

During the last decade, there has been a significant effort to develop a variety of Vehicle Automation and Communication Systems (VACS). These are expected to revolutionise the features and capabilities of individual vehicles within the next decades. The introduction of VACS brings along the (sometimes ignored) necessity and continuously growing opportunities for accordingly adapted or utterly new Traffic Management (TM) actions and strategies. This calls for a new era of freeway TM research and practice, which is indispensable in order to accompany, complement and exploit the evolving VACS deployment. Specifically, the development of new traffic flow modelling and control approaches should become a priority in the years to come.

In the years to come, public transport (PT) will be called to play a significant role towards achieving the sustainable transport system objective set for the future in Europe and beyond. To this end, the quality, accessibility and reliability of its operations should be improved. In this context, the favourable treatment of PT means within the road network may have, among others, a significant contribution. Such treatment can be derived as a result of an appropriate design of the road network facilities and/or the employed signal control at the network junctions. To this end, several approaches have been proposed, and it is the aim of this study to review the state-of-the-art and -practice in such approaches, focusing mainly on those attempting to provide priority via appropriate adjustment, in real time, of the junctions' signal control.

The fulfilment of the targets set by the European policy for sustainable waste management, imposes to the involved actors various difficulties, not only due to the inefficiencies of the existing infrastructure, but also due to the necessity for consideration of public involvement and social aspects. To assist the involved actors in planning an optimal municipal solid waste management scheme, an innovative decision support system has been developed, focusing in the Balkan Region countries. The system integrates an automated process, to assist in the formulation of alternative waste management scenarios with material flow analysis for their evaluation, and a PROMETHEE II-based multi-criteria analysis to assist in the selection of the scenario that best satisfies the preferences of the involved actors. This paper presents the structure and functionality of the decision support system, as well as an application of the system to a real case study concerning the region of Attiki, Greece.

The waterborne sector faces nowadays significant challenges due to several environmental, financial and other concerns. Such challenges may be addressed, among others, by optimizing voyage plans, and diagnosing as early as possible engine failures that may lead to performance degradation. These two procedures require a continuous stream of information acquired from a number of diverse sensors. Frequently, beside central storage and transmission of such information, it is necessary to provide an agile and robust infrastructure which will allow local storage and ad hoc input and manipulation of information, via a user-friendly interface. Our proposed intelligent data acquisition and transmission platform provides an efficient, scalable and low-cost approach.

The traditional diet of Cretan people in the 1960s is the basis of the Mediterranean dietary model. This article investigates the potential of this model to inspire proposals of meals by food-serving businesses, and suggests a methodology for the development of a quality management system, which will certify the delivery of food service according to this dietary model. The proposed methodology is built upon the principles and structure of the ISO 9001:2008 quality standard to enable integration with other quality, environmental, and food safety management systems.

This chapter aims to review and discuss multiobjective optimization genetic algorithms (GA) based approaches to the problem of improving energy efficiency in buildings, and to demonstrate, through a simple example case study, how a GA could be applied to this problem. The chapter is structured into four sections. The first section provides the state‐of‐the‐art review of the application of GAs to the multiobjective improvement of energy efficiency in buildings. The second section presents the example case study and the development of a related multiobjective decision problem. The third section describes the development of a GA for the defined decision problem, and the solution of the problem through the developed GA. The last section summaries the conclusions and main findings of the chapter.

Improving energy efficiency in buildings is a major priority worldwide. The measures employed to save energy vary in nature, and the decision maker is required to establish an optimal solution, taking into account multiple and usually competitive objectives such as energy consumption, financial costs, environmental performance, etc. In other words, the decision maker is facing the challenge to solve a multi-objective optimization problem, although the common practice usually employs other methods like simulation and multiple criteria decision analysis techniques that exploit possibly many but in any case limited alternative options. The multi-objective decision model, presented herein, aims to overcome this limitation by allowing the examination of a potentially infinite number of alternative measures, evaluated according to a set of criteria, which include the annual primary energy consumption of the building, the annual carbon dioxide emissions and the initial investment cost. These criteria are adjusted to the decision maker’s preferences and are optimized with the aid of compromise programming, which is a well-established multi-objective solution methodology. A simple case study is used to demonstrate the functionality of the proposed decision model. The results verify the feasibility of the approach, thus encouraging further improvements and extensions.

The aim of the present chapter is to analyse the decision support processes towards energy efficiency and improvement of the environmental quality in buildings. The main criteria in the decision analysis of buildings are categorized. The decision alternatives which may formulate specific actions, or group of actions (strategies) for buildings’ sustainability are analysed. The decision methodologies presented are separated to online (based on real-time operation of buildings) and offline decision approaches. Both approaches are supported by simulation, multi-objective programming optimization techniques, multi-criteria decision analysis techniques and their combinations in order to reach optimum solution, rank alternatives or provide trade-offs between the criteria. The advantages and drawbacks of the various methods are discussed and analysed.

The paper summarizes the results of a study concerning the operation of industrial plants and their effects to the environment. It also addresses, shortly, the consequences to the quality of human life and proposes potential measures that may contribute to the reduction of the negative environmental impacts. The relatively small organized Industrial Area of Alexandroupolis (Greece) is examined as a case study. In particular, the activities of its major industrial facilities are presented and their emissions to the environment are examined. In addition, the socio-economic aspects of the operation of the Industrial Area are studied. The results of the study showed that the operation of the Industrial Area has specific negative effects in the natural environment of the region and in the quality of life of the residents. Methodological and legislative tools, such as control systems for the environmental pollution, the green chemistry, and the environmental management systems, may be employed to assist the prevention and confrontation of environmental problems.
