This paper aims to provide a meta-analytic examination of the relationship between work-life imbalance and health and wellbeing of older workers. Five hundred forty-four records were extracted from the databases. It was found that the overall odds ratio (OR) between work-life imbalance and the health of older workers was 1.369. Five types of health-related conditions were identified, namely burnout, mental health, physical health, self-rated health and social wellbeing. The category of burnout had the highest effect size and followed by self-rated health, mental health and physical health. The category with the lowest effect size was social wellbeing. The potential moderators in the relationship between work-life imbalance and the health of older workers included gender, region, decade of publication, working class and factors of work-life imbalance. The findings of this study suggest that work-life imbalance has an impact on health and wellbeing of older workers. Policy makers and organizational stakeholders should promote sustainable human resource practices so that staff development and employee wellbeing are targeted at all age groups including older workers. Older workers should have equal access to employability enhancing practices. Older workers and supervisors should be engaged in social dialogue to foster conversations on older workers’ needs and expectations regarding work, non-work and personal fulfillment.

Today’s workers are struggling to achieve a balance between their work and personal life roles because of both specific needs and limited resources. This study explored the socioecological factors that influence work–life balance (WLB) and how they operate. The relationships between WLB, subjective wellbeing, employee wellbeing and quality time allocation were examined. A total of 1063 responses were received, using an online survey. The results show that relational, community and societal factors directly influenced the individual factors and were indirectly associated with perceived WLB. Individual factors (i.e., personal feelings, behaviours and health) were found to be the crucial determinants of an individual’s perceived WLB. It was found that WLB positively correlated with employee wellbeing and quality and quantity of personal life-time. Subjective wellbeing was found to be a significant moderator in the relationship between WLB and its outcomes. This study demonstrated the process of how workers determine their own WLB by applying the socioecological framework for categorising the determinants and suggested new avenues that improve the whole wellbeing of workers and also foster long-term development of organisations.

This paper aims to investigate impact of emotional and cognitive enhancement on improving the empathic aspects of young adults towards older adults. A sample of 90 young adults aged between 18 to 30 years was collected to test the research hypotheses. The results indicate that participants with either emotional or cognitive enhancement empathize lesser than those with both emotional and cognitive enhancement. Participants with both emotional and cognitive enhancement showed the highest level of empathy as with those without emotional, cognitive and both emotional and cognitive enhancement. These insights have important implications on the service sectors specifically towards serving and caring for an aging population in the midst of urbanization, globalisation and modernization. Young adults need to develop emphatic attitudes while providing service to the older adults as young adults are the future generation. The paper is concluded with a discussion on the findings, research implications and limitations.

This study investigates the relationships between three dimensions of competitive priorities (customer focus, product innovation and delivery) and how Asian manufacturers manage and develop their employees and the consequent effect on sustainable manufacturing performance. Three dimensions of manufacturing performance are considered in this study—quality performance, production flexibility and operations cost. This study uses 259 datasets collected from manufacturers in four Asian countries. Structural equation modeling and mediation analysis are performed to test the relationships. Results show that there is a significant positive and mediating relationship between the competitive priority of product innovation, employee management and development, quality performance, production flexibility and operation cost. However, such significant relationships do not exist with competitive priorities of customer focus and delivery. Organizations are constantly faced with the problem of determining which competitive priorities to focus on. However, different competitive priorities have different effects on how the employees are managed and developed, and ultimately, on organizational performance and competitiveness. There is a need to focus on innovation-led strategies that relate to sustainable outcomes. This is one of the first studies in Asia to understand the multilateral relationships between different competitive priorities and different performance dimensions when employee management and development intermediate.

The impacts of the work–life balance arrangement on organisational performance is a growing concern amongst researchers and practitioners. This study synthesised 202 records from 58 published papers to evaluate the relationship between the work–life balance arrangement and organisational performance by means of a meta-analysis. The organisational performance was measured based on six perspectives, including career motivation, employee attendance, employee recruitment, employee retention, organisational commitment, and productivity. The results showed a positive relationship between the work–life balance arrangement and organisational performance (OR: 1.181, 95% CI: 1.125–1.240, p < 0.001). Of the six perspectives, only career motivation, employee attendance, employee recruitment, and employee retention were significantly associated with the work–life balance arrangement. The moderators affecting the relationship between the work–life balance arrangement and organisational performance were gender, sector, and employee hierarchy. The results provide theoretical suggestions on the effectiveness of the work–life balance arrangement in terms of the six perspectives related to organisational performance.

The proliferation of technology offers potential solutions for enhancing the well-being of older adults. However, older adults often have low digital literacy and are disengaged from the digital world. With age-appropriate training, older adults are expected to acquire a wide range of technological skills and bridge the digital divide. Through the lens of social cognitive theory, this study aims to investigate the effectiveness of observational training through behavior modeling in enhancing technology acceptance in older adults. The moderating effects of model identity on training outcomes from a generational perspective are examined. An empirical training experiment was completed with 59 community-dwelling older adults. Training outcomes were measured using cognitive knowledge, affective variables, and meta-cognition. The results ascertain the effectiveness of observational training in improving their technological knowledge, self-efficacy, outcome expectations, and sense of social connectedness when using technologies. From a generational perspective, the older adult behavior model is more effective than the young or child behavior models in increasing self-efficacy and willingness to use technology. The model identity further enhances the positive outcomes of training. The results of this study contribute to designing educational interventions to bridge the digital divide.

Water plays a major role in our digestion, absorption, transportation and use of nutrients. Research has shown that inadequate water consumption can cause health risk of urinary stone disease, cancers, salivary gland functions, childhood and adolescent obesity and individuals’ overall health. Therefore, daily adequate fluid intake is an important nutrition guideline for people of all age. However, achieving such daily habit is a considerable challenge in many people and there is little data assessing the compliance for fluid intake. Although smart bottles have been introduced in the market, the existing bottles merely focus on a single aspect (fluid intake monitoring). Other aspects (medical adherence and storage compartment) have been neglected in the design. Given that medication often needs to be taken with water, it is important to incorporate fluid and medication monitoring system in the smart bottle. This study aims to explore the young bottles users’ needs and requirements of smart bottle through focus groups discussions as well as to propose a system design of smart bottle that integrates with the fluid intake monitoring system, medical adherence system and storage compartment. A sample of 14 young adults participated in the focus groups discussions. The results of focus groups discussions offer a fresh insight on three categories, namely, design, usage and technological features for smart bottle designers. A system design of a multi-functional smart bottle is also proposed. Research implications, limitations, and future research directions are also discussed.

We conceptualized security-related stress (SRS) and proposed a theoretical model linking SRS, discrete emotions, coping response, and information security policy (ISP) compliance. We used an experience sampling design, wherein 138 professionals completed surveys. We observed that SRS had a positive association with frustration and fatigue, and these negative emotions were associated with neutralization of ISP violations. Additionally, frustration and fatigue make employees more likely to follow through on their rationalizations of ISP violations by decreased ISP compliance. Our findings provide evidence that neutralization is not a completely stable phenomenon but can vary within individuals from one time point to another.

Service providers are increasingly searching for new and innovative ways of providing customers with a seamless experience in the service environment. This paper used an engineering approach to service systems development and a model of technology acceptance as a conceptual lens through which to examine hotel guests’ acceptance of a unified hotel access control system (UHACS) for seamless hotel check-in and room access. This system is the first of its kind, and this study is the first evaluation of it using two samples consisting of 100 hands-on and 120 online survey hotel guest participants. Before completing the questionnaire, hands-on survey participants were briefed and allowed to practice using the UHACS, whereas online survey participants received a flowchart that explained the concept and process of the UHACS. The data from both samples were analyzed quantitatively through partial least squares structural equation modeling and test of difference. The results showed that the ease of using and usefulness of the UHACS significantly facilitated seamless experiences in hotel check-in and room access, which in turn, significantly and positively shaped attitudes toward the UHACS, and together with its improved security features, encouraged greater intention to use the UHACS. No significant differences in evaluations were found when gender, age, and familiarity with and risk disposition to technology were considered across the two samples. The paper concludes with a discussion of the implications of the findings for theory and practice, the limitations of the study, and directions for future research.

This study investigates the impact of environmental knowledge and perceived product quality on purchasing intention and purchasing behavior of recycled products: A4 paper, mobile phones and printers. The intent is to understand how to move future generations toward more sustainable behavior, as currently unsustainable amounts of waste are generated across the Far East. Expectancy value theory and the theory of reasoned action are applied to the purchase of products with recovered and/or recycled content (n = 215). The study indicates: (1) a significant positive relationship was found between both the intention to purchase and the purchase of recycled products; (2) the perception of recycled product risk has a significant negative impact on the perception of recycled product quality and the attitude toward environmental protection; (3) perceived quality of recycled product is positively related to attitude toward environmental protection; (4) perceived quality of recycled product and attitude to environmental protection are positively related to intention to purchase recycled products; and (5) surprisingly, knowledge regarding environmental damage and pollution is unrelated to attitude toward environmental protection. This study offers new insights into the impact of education on environmental protection, purchasing of greener products and the need for environmental education to move from a goal of understanding to that of action.

The purpose of this research is to investigate the relationships between supply chain relationships/integration, innovative capabilities and manufacturing performance. The study adopts Institutional Theory and Resource-Based View Theory to assess relationships in 171 organisations drawn from three rapidly developing countries – Brazil, India and China. Data were collected using the International Manufacturing Strategy Survey (IMSS VI) and analysed using structural equation modelling. The study found that supply chain relationships and integration relate positively to both product and process innovative capabilities. The study also found that both product and process innovative capabilities relate positively to manufacturing performance. Furthermore, there was a positive relationship between product innovative capabilities and process innovative capabilities. The findings provide new insights into manufacturers in the three countries and show that the relationships they build with their customers have encouraged them to develop new innovative capabilities. These new capabilities, in turn, have enabled them to reap benefits of improved manufacturing performance.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the direct effect of external pressure on environmental outcomes and manufacturing performance and examine the mediating effect of sustainable management practice. This study draws upon institutional theory and resource-based view to understand how factors such as external pressure and sustainable management relate with environmental outcomes and manufacturing performance. The model specifies previously unexplored direct and mediating relationships between external pressure, sustainable management, environmental outcomes and manufacturing performance. The empirical analysis is based on data collected from the sixth edition of the International Manufacturing Strategy Survey. The research hypotheses are tested using structural equation modelling. Results show that while there is a significant direct and mediating relationship between external pressure, adoption of formal sustainability programmes and environmental outcomes, such significant relationships do not exist with manufacturing performance. The study shows that external pressure can influence adoption of sustainable practices but this does not necessarily lead to an improvement in manufacturing performance. As such managers need to identify the actual benefits of sustainability and weigh them up against costs of implementing such programmes. The relationship between the adoption of sustainable practices and organisational performance is a complex one. In contrast to previous studies, this study found that while external pressure and sustainable management relate positively with environmental outcomes, no such relationship exists with manufacturing performance. This raises a number of question marks over naive implementation of sustainable strategies.

This study aims to examine the direct and mediating relationships between team diversity, individual and team learning, and individual and team innovation performance. Using a sample of 266 white-collar professionals in Hong Kong, we found that team diversity plays a substantial role in improving both individual and team learning. Individual learning and team learning are independent and positively related to individual and team innovation performance. Individual learning partially mediates the relationship between team diversity and team learning. Individual innovation performance is found to be a partial mediator of team learning and team innovation performance. This study contributes in understanding the unexplored mediating effects of individual learning on team learning, and the individual innovation performance on team innovation performance. Team diversity is found to be the main enabler in the overall model. It is hoped that the research paradigm of this article will generate further development of information systems and technology literature.

The goals of this study are two-fold: (1) To develop a novel concept of a light system with the use of Near Field Communication (NFC)-enabled technology, Bluetooth and Raspberry-PI. This new system is known as NFC Light System (NLS). (2) To set up an experimental design to examine the influence of perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use on older adults’ behavioral intention to use the NLS. Our proposed system was empirically tested with 33 older adults in Malaysia. Our findings show that perceived ease of use appears to be the primary factor for the older adults to use the NLS. Interestingly, perceived usefulness was not a significant predictor of older adults’ behavioral intention to use the NLS. From the practical viewpoint, this study offers a new insight for gerontechnology manufacturer and developers to focus their design efforts on easy-to-use attribute that are desired by older adults.

This paper reports an empirical research on the service quality (SQ) of the websites of small businesses in Hong Kong. The research is based on a questionnaire survey of 124 netizens (net citizen) and a review of 30 websites in terms of 60 features related to website content. The research found that (1) about 13% of the website features are not highly expected by netizens, but most websites provide these features, (2) about 37% features are highly expected by netizens but few websites provide these features, and (3) about 50% features are in a balance, i.e. relevant expectations are provided by websites. Additionally, the research produces a ranked checklist of netizen expectations and a ranked checklist of website deliveries. The findings of this study provide valuable insights into website quality as an assessment of web site design and netizens' expectation. The implications for improving the existing websites or designing new websites for small businesses are discussed. This paper also contributes to the electronic SQ literature by employing a different approach to the dominant focus of E-S-QUAL in past studies. This paper concludes with recommendations for future research in the field of SQ in websites.

The purpose of this paper is to examine the total quality management (TQM) practices of both manufacturing and service firms in order to determine the relationship between the multidimensionality of TQM practices and role conflict of employees. Questionnaires are distributed to 433 employees of 98 different firms from manufacturing and service industries in Malaysia. The results support significant negative correlation among all TQM practices (i.e. leadership, strategic planning, customer focus, human resource focus, process management and information analysis) and role conflict. By employing multiple regression analysis, leadership, process management and information analysis are found to have significant and negative relationship with role conflict. Human resource focus is reported to have a significant and positive relationship with role conflict. This model is ideal for practical usage by managers to evaluate the perceptions of role conflict of employees in TQM‐oriented firms. The findings suggest that firms should look into ways of developing the major roles of leadership and process management as well as improving efficient use of information analysis in order to reduce the detrimental role conflict of employees. This finding may also help administrators and individuals to attain a fine‐grained understanding of different dimensions of TQM in relation to role conflict. TQM practices appear to be related to role conflict, addressing an apparent noticeable gap in the literature of TQM and the psychological well‐being of employees. This paper also lays the foundation for formation of a theoretically based model which integrates the elements of TQM and role conflict.
