The present study reported a facile method for the determination of melamine in milk powder products based on the aggregation of reactant-free 5 nm gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). The strong electrostatic attraction between the positively charged exocyclic amine groups present in the melamine molecule and the negatively charged ions bound to the AuNPs induced aggregation of the AuNPs, resulting in visible color changes that could be seen with the naked eye and monitored by ultraviolet–visible (UV–Vis) absorbance spectra. The method shows high sensitivity with detection limits of 1 × 10−9 M for visual detection and 1 × 10−11 M for UV–Vis analysis, which is far below the safety limit of melamine ingestion in infant formula (1 ppm = 7.9 × 10−6 M) and the detection limit acquired by most AuNP-based melamine detection methods. Good recoveries were obtained over the range of 94.7–95.5% with a relative standard deviation of mean recovery (RSD) ranging from 1.40 to 5.81. The method provides a simple, feasible, fast and real-time detection of melamine adulterants in infant formula by the naked eye, without the aid of advanced instruments.

Modern technology has been evolving towards nanotechnology due to the materials that can be transformed and manipulated on micro and nanoscales. In terms of detection, nanomaterials offer substantial sensing advantages, particularly in terms of enhanced sensitivity, synergistic effect, stability and selectivity. The immobilization of nanoparticles could alter the physicochemical properties of the electrode’s surface depending on the type of materials synthesized and employed. This research examined the synthesis of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and chitosan (CS), as well as the immobilization of Prussian blue (PB) on the surface of a bare gold electrode (AuE). These materials have been reported to have strong electrical conductivity and nanomaterial compatibility. In contrast, aluminum has been described as a replacement for traditional water quality treatment processes, such as chlorination and ozonation. Aluminum concentrations must be monitored despite the use of chemical treatment for water quality. Hence, excessive levels of exposure frequently result in neurotoxic effects including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disorders. In this experiment, the optimal conditions for f-MWCNTs, CS, PB, and AuE for the detection of Al3+ are phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) (0.1 M, pH 2) with 5 mM Prussian Blue; scan rate = 0.25 Vs−1; accumulation duration = 25 s; and volume = 10 mL (ratio of 4:6). The performance of f-MWCNTs, CS, PB, and AuE was measured between 0.2 and 1 ppm with a correlation coefficient of R2 = 0.9853 (y = 0.0387x + 0.0748). The limit of detection (LOD) of the modified electrode was determined to be 0.002 ppm, with a recovery of 98.66–99.56%. The application of nanoparticles resulted in various advantages, including high conductivity, a simple, less time-consuming preparation technique, and enhanced sensitivity and stability for detecting the lowest concentration of Al3+ in drinking water.

Infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) is an enveloped, positive-sense, single-stranded RNA virus belonging to the genus Gammacoronavirus. It primarily infects avian species, causing respiratory and renal disease and irreversible damage to the oviduct, which can lead to high mortality rates in chickens. The lack of rapid and reliable diagnostic tools for on-farm IBV detection hampers timely disease management and control measures. The introduction of DNA biosensors offers a promising approach for the sensitive and specific detection of IBV, facilitating rapid identification and intervention. In this study, an electrochemical DNA biosensor with a multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)-modified gold electrode was developed for IBV detection. The biosensor targeted the target-specific 5′ untranslated region (5′-UTR) of the IBV genome. Under optimal conditions, the immobilization and hybridization efficiencies were evaluated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), with methylene blue as a redox indicator. The developed DNA biosensor demonstrated a dynamic detection range from 2.0 × 10−12 to 2.0 × 10−5 mol L−1, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 2.6 nM and a limit of quantification (LOQ) of 0.79 nM. Validation using a small subset of clinical samples, including crude complementary DNA, and polymerase chain reaction products, showed high recovery rates ranging from 95.41% to 99.55%. While these findings highlight the potential of the proposed DNA biosensor as an innovative diagnostic tool for IBV detection, this study remains a proof of concept. However, further validation using a large number of clinical samples is essential to assess its feasibility, robustness, and practical application in a real-world farm setting

Forty-two (42) Etlingera species are found in Borneo, commonly known as wild ginger. Of these, 36 species are indigenous to the region, while six species—including Etlingera coccinea, Etlingera crispata, Etlingera elatior, Etlingera foetens, Etlingera megalocheilos, and Etlingera metriocheilos—are also found beyond Borneo. Eight species hold significant value for local communities, serving roles in traditional medicine, crop production, cosmetics, and personal care. Scientific studies have confirmed six key pharmacological properties in Etlingera species: anticancer, antidiabetic, antibacterial, antioxidant, pest control, and nephroprotective activities. These bioactivities are attributed to the presence of key bioactive compounds such as β-pinene, 1,7-bis(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)heptan-3-yl acetate (etlingerin), curcumin, α-thujene, cyclododecane, and estragole. In modern applications, Etlingera species are utilized in contemporary cuisine, ornamental horticulture, cosmetics, personal care products, and as natural colorants. This overview underscores the importance of Etlingera species to local communities and highlights their relevance in contemporary applications, offering a foundation for identifying species with medicinal and commercial potential in the Borneo region.
