The adoption of new technologies, such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), image processing, and machine learning, is disrupting traditional concepts in agriculture, with a new range of possibilities opening in its fields of research. Plant density is one of the most important corn (Zea mays L.) yield factors, yet its precise measurement after the emergence of plants is impractical in large-scale production fields due to the amount of labor required. This letter aims to develop techniques that enable corn plant counting and the automation of this process through deep learning and computational vision, using images of several corn crops obtained using a low-cost unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) platform assembled with an RGB sensor.

Corrosion identification and repair is a vital task in aircraft maintenance to ensure continued structural integrity. Regarding fuselage lap joints, typically, visual inspections are followed by non-destructive methodologies, which are time-consuming. The visual inspection of large areas suffers not only from subjectivity but also from the variable probability of corrosion detection, which is aggravated by the multiple layers used in fuselage construction. In this paper, we propose a methodology for automatic image-based corrosion detection of aircraft structures using deep neural networks. For machine learning, we use a dataset that consists of D-Sight Aircraft Inspection System (DAIS) images from different lap joints of Boeing and Airbus aircrafts. We also employ transfer learning to overcome the shortage of aircraft corrosion images. With precision of over 93%, we demonstrate that our approach detects corrosion with a precision comparable to that of trained operators, aiding to reduce the uncertainties related to operator fatigue or inadequate training. Our results indicate that our methodology can support specialists and engineers in corrosion monitoring in the aerospace industry, potentially contributing to the automation of condition-based maintenance protocols.

One of the current challenges is to reduce collisions between vehicles and animals on roads, such accidents resulting in environmental imbalance and large expenditures in public coffers. This paper presents the components of a simple animal detection system and also a methodology for animals detection in images provided by cameras installed on the roads. This methodology allows the features extraction of regions of the image and the use of Machine Learning (ML) techniques to classify the areas into two classes: animal and non-animal. Two ML techniques were compared using synthetic images, traversing the pixels of the image using five distinctive approaches. Results show that the KNN learning model is more reliable than Random Forest to identify animals on roads accurately.

The detection of failures (DF) in coffee crops is fundamental in evaluating product quality and the optimal occupation of planted areas. The use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in precision agriculture has great potential as a tool to analyze critical parameters in cultivation, among them the detection of planting failures. This letter presents a novel methodology for DF from aerial images, obtained using a UAV capable of collecting high-resolution RGB images. The proposed approach uses mathematical morphology operators to detect failures over planted areas and returns both the individual positions of these failures and total failure length (sum of empty spaces between plants), thus facilitating decision making for further actions. Results show that the proposed DF method is reliable for accurately identifying failures over rows of planted coffee crops.
