Background: Salinity is one of the most challenging abiotic stresses restricting the growth of plants. In vitroscreening will increase the efficiency and speed of salinity tolerant genotypes identifications. The response of four tomato cultivars under salinity was analyzedin vitroto evaluate the seedlings growth, biochemical, and gene expression responses as well as the effect of nano zinc and iron on callus induction and plant regeneration. Results: The results showed that an increase in salinity stress in the medium decreased the germination percentage, fresh and dry weight of shoot, root length, chlorophyll a, b and carotenoids content, K and Ca content, and on the other hand, Na content was increased. MDA content (‘Nora’, ‘PS-10’, ‘Peto’ and ‘Roma’: 1.71, 1.78, 1.66 and 2.16 folds, respectively), electrolyte leakage (‘PS-10’: 33.33%; ‘Roma’: 56.33%), were increased with salinity of 100 mM compared to control. Proline content was increased in 50 mM NaCl (10.8 fold). The most activity of antioxidant enzymes including CAT, SOD, APX, GPX, and GR was observed in the ‘PS-10’ cultivar, and the lowest activity of these enzymes was observed in ‘Roma’ under salinity stress. The AsA and GSH were decreased and DHA and GSSG were increased with the increased intensity of salinity. The relative expression ofSOD,APX, andGRgenes varied in different cultivars at different salinity concentrations. The most percentage of callus induction was observed with applying iron oxide nanoparticles, and the most regeneration rate was recorded using zinc oxide nanoparticles. Conclusion: The results showed that salt-tolerant cultivars such as ‘PS-10’ with better osmotic adjustment, are suitable candidates for the future production and breeding programs. The use of nutrient nanoparticles under salinity stress for different tomato cultivars increased their performance.

Salinity is one of the most important abiotic stresses that reduce plant growth and performance by changing physiological and biochemical processes. In addition to improving the crop, using nanomaterials in agriculture can reduce the harmful effects of environmental stresses, particularly salinity. A factorial experiment was conducted in the form of a completely randomized design with two factors including salt stress at three levels (0, 50, and 100 mM NaCl) and chitosan-salicylic acid nanocomposite at three levels (0, 0.1, and 0.5 mM). The results showed reductions in chlorophylls (a, b, and total), carotenoids, and nutrient elements (excluding sodium) while proline, hydrogen peroxide, malondialdehyde, total soluble protein, soluble carbohydrate, total antioxidant, and antioxidant enzymes activity increased with treatment chitosan-salicylic acid nanocomposite (CS-SA NCs) under different level NaCl. Salinity stress reduced Fm', Fm, and Fv/Fm by damage to photosynthetic systems, but treatment with CS-SA NCs improved these indices during salinity stress. In stress-free conditions, applying the CS-SA NCs improved the grapes' physiological, biochemical, and nutrient elemental balance traits. CS-SA NCs at 0.5 mM had a better effect on the studied traits of grapes under salinity stress. The CS-SA nanoparticle is a biostimulant that can be effectively used to improve the grape plant yield under salinity stress.

Grapes are sensitive to early autumn and spring low temperature damage. The current study aimed to assay the effects of cold stress (+1 °C for 4, 8, and 16 h) on three grapevine cultivars (Ghiziluzum, Khalili, and Perllete). The results showed that cold stress caused significant changes in the antioxidant and biochemicals content in the studied cultivars. Furthermore, examining the chlorophyll fluorescence indices, cold stress caused a significant increase in minimal fluorescence (F0), a decrease in maximal fluorescence (Fm), and the maximum photochemical quantum yield of photosystem II (Fv/Fm) in all cultivars. Among the studied cultivars, ‘Perllete’ had the highest increase in proline content and activity of antioxidant enzymes and also had the lowest accumulation of malondialdehyde, hydrogen peroxide, electrolyte leakage, and F0, as well as less of a decrease in Fm and Fv/Fm, and had a higher tolerance to cold stress than ‘Ghiziluzum’ and ‘Khalili’. ‘Perllete’ and ‘Ghiziluzum’ showed reasonable tolerance to the low temperature stress. ‘Khalili’ was sensitive to the stress. The rapid screening of grapevine cultivars in early spring low temperatures is applicable with the assaying of some biomolecules and chlorophyll fluorescence.

Biofertilizers, such as arbuscular mycorrhiza fungi (AMF) and seaweed extract (SWE), have been effective in environmental and agricultural ecosystems. In this study, the effects of AMF, SWE, and their co-application were assayed on the growth and antioxidant potential of lettuce plants. The experiment was conducted as a factorial based on a completely randomized design with two factors and four replications under greenhouse conditions. The first factor was AMF (Glomus mosseae) at two levels consisting of AMF application (20 g pot−1), and without using AMF; and the second factor was SWE foliar spraying (Ascophyllum nodosum) at 0.5, 1.5 and 3 g L−1 concentration. The results revealed that the highest root colonization (85%) belonged to AMF and SWE (3 g L−1) × AMF; the lowest colonization rate (65%) was observed for AMF × SWE (0.5 g L−1) treatment. The highest growth parameters (leaf number, shoot and root fresh weight, head diameter), biochemical traits (total soluble proteins, carbohydrates content) and TAA, total antioxidant activity by FRAP method and ascorbic acid, total phenolics, and flavonoids content were obtained with the co-applications. Therefore, the best results of the evaluated traits were achieved with AMF × SWE (3 g L−1). The TAA value was increased three-fold compared to the control. Total phenolics and flavonoids content were 2.24 and 6.59 times higher than the control, respectively. On the other hand, leaf dry weight was decreased with the further growth of the plants. Overall, the co-application of AMF with SWE can be recommended to producers as an alternative and environment-friendly strategy to improve the qualitative and quantitative traits of the lettuce crop.

Drought stress is one of the most important environmental constraints that negatively affect the growth and production of crops worldwide. Recently, nanotechnology has been increasingly used to improve the tolerance of plants exposed to abiotic stresses such as drought. The present study was designed to investigate the moderating effect of cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO2 NPs) on alleviating drought stress for the apple cv. ‘Red Delicious’ on M9 rootstock. Drought stress caused a significant increase in CAT, GPX, APX, and SOD enzyme activities compared to control plants. Drought decreased the content of macro and microelements, and the application of CeO2 NPs led to significant changes in the content of these elements in plants under drought stress. CeO2 NPs significantly reduced chlorophyll damage under high drought levels. In addition, they alleviated the damage caused by drought, which was shown by lower levels of MDA and EL. When these nanoparticles were used during drought stress, they greatly increased the production of abscisic acid and indole-3-acetic acid hormone. In response to drought stress, the expression of DREB1A and DREB1E genes increased. The use of CeO2 NPs in stressful and non-stressful conditions had a positive effect on improving the studied traits of the apple plants and enhancing nutrient levels. Taken together, the findings suggest that CeO2 NPs can be used as promising drought stress-reducing agents in apples. Therefore, understanding the mechanisms of abiotic stress in global horticulture and the role of nanoparticles is essential for developing improved, drought-tolerant crops and the adoption of measures to deal with changing climatic conditions.

Phytoremediation of heavy metals (HMs) is an efficient methodology to remove toxic metals from the soil. On the other hand, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are utilized as biological fertilizers as they improve root expansion, nutrient uptake, shoot growth, and plant biological performance. In this study, the effect of AMF inoculation on the morphological traits, macro- and micronutrient contents, essential oil content (EOC), and essential oil yield (EOY) of lavender (Lavandula angustifolia L.) was investigated, under HM (Pb and Ni) stress in greenhouse conditions. The performed treatments were as follows: AMF (Funneliformis mosseae) inoculation (5 g kg−1 soil), and HM stress, including Pb (150 and 225 mg kg−1 soil from Pb(NO3)2) and Ni (220 and 330 mg kg−1 soil from Ni(NO3)2). The controls were the absence of AMF and HM treatments. The results showed that the contamination with Pb and Ni decreased plant height, branch number, fresh and dry weights of shoots and roots, and P, K, Mg, Fe, Zn, and Mn contents. At the same time, AMF inoculation modulated the adverse effects of Pb and Ni treatments. AMF inoculation and lower concentrations of Pb and Ni increased the EOC and EOY of lavender plants, whereas the higher levels of HMs reduced the morphobiometric traits. AMF inoculation increased the Pb and Ni contents in roots. The treatment with Pb at 220 mg kg−1 led to a higher stress effect than that of Ni treatment. In conclusion, the results recommend AMF inoculation as a helpful procedure to improve the growth responses and EOY of lavender in environments polluted with the tested HMs and suggest that AMF inoculation is potentially efficient in mitigating HM stress effects.
