A novel species, Appendiculella viticis, was collected on freshly fallen leaves of Vitex canescens (Lamiaceae) in Chiang Rai, Thailand. This species is unique in having vertically striate, conoid cells, without larviform appendages and fusiform to ellipsoidal, guttulate ascospores. Morphological comparison and phylogenetic analysis of combined LSU and ITS sequence data provide evidence that the species is novel. Morphological comparisons of Appendiculella species are provided. The molecular data provides evidence to support the distinctness of Appendiculella.
A bitunicate ascomycete was collected on dead bamboo leaves from Guizhou Province, China. Phylogenetic analyses based on large subunit rRNA (LSU), small subunit rRNA (SSU), translation elongation factor 1-α (tef 1-α) and internal transcribed spacers (ITS) revealed that this species belongs to the genus Neostagonosporella (Phaeosphaeriaceae, Pleosporales) and forms a well-supported lineage (98% ML, 1.00BYPP) with N. sichuanensis. This taxon resembles the type species of Neostagonosporella, N. sichuanensis by its globose to subglobose central ostiolate ascomata, cylindrical to cylindric-clavate, short pedicellate asci and hyaline, cylindrical to fusiform ascospores, as well as a close phylogenetic affinity. However, it differs from N. sichuanensis by its comparatively smaller ascomata, cellular, septate pseudoparaphyses and ascospores with thick sheath, whereas N. sichuanensis has comparatively large ascomata, trabeculate pseudoparaphyses and ascospores with comparatively thin sheath. Therefore, we introduce this taxon as a novel species, namely Neostagonosporellabambusicola and compare it with the other species of Neostagonosporella.
Sooty mold is a common fungal foliar epiphyte that can significantly impact agricultural crops. In this study, we found four different species of sooty molds belonging to Capnodiaceae occurring on different plants in northern Thailand viz. Broussonetia papyrifera, Carica papaya, Mangifera indica, Manihot esculenta, and Rosa × damascene. These hosts showed dark brown mycelia covering their leaves. Phylogenetic analyses using a combination of LSU, ITS, tef-1α, and rpb2 sequence data showed that the newly obtained sequences belong to Capnodium coartatum, Ca. gamsii, Conidiocarpus caucasicus, and Phragmocapnias betle. The morphological characteristics of these four species concurred with the phylogenetic results. Notably, these four species are reported as new host records. Additionally, we validate Ca. paracoartatum sp. nov., and synonymize Co. asiaticus and Co. siamensis under Co. caucasicus based on morphological and phylogenetic analyses.
A novel species Lembosia mimusopis is introduced with evidence from morpho-molecular characterization. It was collected from the leaves of Mimusops elengi in Chiang Rai Province, Thailand. The new species is unique in having a mucilaginous sheath surrounding its immature ascospores. LSU sequence analyses phylogenetically support separation of this species from other Lembosia species.
