Traffic congestion is a perpetual problem for the sustainability of transportation development. Traffic congestion causes delays, inconvenience, and economic losses to drivers, as well as air pollution. Identification and quantification of traffic congestion are crucial for decision-makers to initiate mitigation strategies to improve the overall transportation system’s sustainability. In this paper, the currently available measures are detailed and compared by implementing them on a daily and weekly traffic historical dataset. The results showed each measure showed significant variations in congestion states while indicating a similar congestion trend. The advantages and disadvantages of each measure are identified from the data analysis. This study summarizes the current road traffic congestion measures and provides a constructive insight into the development of a sustainable and resilient traffic management system.

The oil and gas (O&G) sector is a critical energy infrastructure to a Nation’s welfare. As developed as the O&G industry may seem, its aging infrastructure gradually shows numerous challenges to keep up with the growing energy demand, increasing operation costs, and environmental concerns. A robust O&G infrastructure that is risk-free, reliable, and resilient towards expected or unexpected threats can offer an uninterrupted supply of O&G to downstream stakeholders, competitive prices to customers, and better environmental footprints. With the shift towards renewable energy, the notion of sustainable development should be firmly embedded in O&G infrastructure and operations to facilitate the smooth transition towards future renewable energy generation. This paper offers a comprehensive and innovative approach to achieving sustainable development for O&G infrastructure by examining it from a holistic risk, reliability, and resilience (3Rs) perspective. The role of each individual concept and their collective influence on sustainable development in the O&G industry will be thoroughly discussed. Moreover, this paper will highlight the significant impact of the holistic 3Rs approach on sustainable development and propose future research directions. Given the complexity of O&G infrastructure, it is crucial to incorporate sustainable development practices into every dimension of the O&G infrastructure, iteratively and continuously, to achieve the ultimate goal of long-term sustainability. This paper makes a significant contribution to the field by providing valuable insights and recommendations for achieving sustainable development in the O&G industry.

To reduce unforeseen disaster risks, infrastructure systems are expected to be resilient. The impact of many natural disasters on networked infrastructures is often observed to follow a localized attack pattern. The localized attack can be demonstrated by the failures of a group of links concentrated in a particular geographical domain which result in adjacent isolated nodes. In this paper, a resilience-based recovery assessment framework is proposed. The framework aims to find the most effective recovery strategy when subjected to localized attacks. The proposed framework was implemented in a lattice network structure inspired by a water distribution network case study. Three different recovery strategies were studied with cost and time constraints incorporated: preferential recovery based on nodal weight (PRNW), periphery recovery (PR), and localized recovery (LR). The case study results indicated that LR could be selected as the most resilient and cost-effective recovery strategy. This paper hopes to aid in the decision-making process by providing a strategic baseline for finding an optimized recovery strategy for localized attack scenarios.

Integrating unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) into intelligent transportation systems (ITSs) will be pivotal in shaping next-generation smart cities. This paper proposes a novel three-layered framework for integrating UAVs into intelligent transportation systems (ITSs) and reviews the current developments, challenges, and future directions in this emerging field. This framework provides a comprehensive overview of the key components of UAV-integrated ITSs, encompassing UAV specifications and deployment strategies, communication networks, and data utilization for traffic management. The first layer explores UAVs’ technical specifications, deployment strategies, and trajectory optimization, essential for maximizing UAV performance in transportation contexts. The second layer addresses the communication networks between UAVs and vehicles, along with the use of UAVs for responsive traffic monitoring. This includes the development of robust communication protocols and real-time traffic analysis to enhance system efficiency. The third layer focuses on advanced data collection processing techniques and complexities, reviewing the methods for analyzing the traffic data collected by UAVs for decision-making in transportation management. Moreover, the paper presents the current UAV-enabled ITS implementation, highlighting key challenges and future research directions. By providing a comprehensive overview of UAV-enabled ITSs, this study presents a significant portrayal of the current landscape of UAV integration in ITSs and serves as a foundation for future advancements in smart city infrastructure.
