The natural environment is essential for human survival and development since it provides water resources, land resources, biological resources and climate resources etc. As a developing country, China has witnessed a significant change in the natural environment in recent decades; and therefore, monitoring and mastering the status of the environment is of great significance. Due to the characteristics of large-scale and dynamic observation, remote sensing technology has been an indispensable approach for environmental monitoring. This paper reviews the satellite resources, institutions and policies for environmental monitoring in China, and the advances in research and application of remote sensing from five aspects: ecological index retrieval, environmental monitoring in protected areas, rural areas, urban areas and mining areas. The remote sensing models and methods for various types of environmental monitoring, and the specific applications in China are comprehensively summarized. This paper also points out major challenges existing at the current stage: satellite sensor problems, integrated use challenges of datasets, uncertainty in the retrieval process of ecological variables, scaling effect problems, a low degree of automation, the weak ability of forecasting and comprehensive analysis, and a lack of computational power for massive datasets. Finally, the development trend and future directions are put forward to direct the research and application of environmental monitoring and protection in the new era.

The delays of radio signals transmitted by global navigation satellite system (GNSS) satellites and induced by neutral atmosphere, which are usually represented by zenith tropospheric delay (ZTD), are required as critical information both for GNSS positioning and navigation and GNSS meteorology. Establishing a stable and reliable ZTD model is one of the interests in GNSS research. In this study, we proposed a regional ZTD model that makes full use of the ZTD calculated from regional GNSS data and the corresponding ZTD estimated by global pressure and temperature 3 (GPT3) model, adopting the artificial neutral network (ANN) to construct the correlation between ZTD derived from GPT3 and GNSS observations. The experiments in Hong Kong using Satellite Positioning Reference Station Network (SatRet) were conducted and three statistical values, i.e., bias, root mean square error (RMSE), and compound relative error (CRE) were adopted for our comparisons. Numerical results showed that the proposed model outperformed the parameter ZTD model (Saastamoinen model) and the empirical ZTD model (GPT3 model), with an approximately 56%/52% and 52%/37% RMSE improvement in the internal and external accuracy verification, respectively. Moreover, the proposed method effectively improved the systematic deviation of GPT3 model and achieved better ZTD estimation in both rainy and rainless conditions.

Road information as a type of basic geographic information is very important for services such as city planning and traffic navigation, as such there is an urgent need for updating road information in a timely manner. Scholars have proposed various methods of extracting roads from remote sensing images, but most of them are not applicable to rural roads with diverse materials, large curvature changes, and a severe shelter problem. In view of these problems, we propose a road extraction method based on geometric feature inference. In this method, we make full use of the linear characteristics of roads, and construct a geometric knowledge base of rural roads using information on selected sample road segments. Based on the knowledge base, we identify the parallel line pairs in images, and further conduct grouping and connection instructed by knowledge reasoning, and finally obtain complete rural roads. The case study in Xiangtan City of China’s Hunan Province validates the performance of the proposed method.

This study analysed the changing pattern of the spectral features of copper-stressed leaves for several vegetation types, and explored the mechanism of the Copper Stress Vegetation Index (CSVI). First, the change of seven key spectral features (Green Peak, Red Valley, Red Shoulder, NIR (Near Infrared) Reflectance Platform, Blue-Edge, Yellow-Edge, and Red-Edge) with copper stress level from low to high, were presented and analysed. Second, the chlorophyll contents in leaves were investigated to explain the spectral characteristics at the visible band. Third, the leaf structure and absorption related to copper were analysed to explore the reason of changing pattern at NIR band. The results showed that there are significant changing trends at Blue-Edge, Green Peak, and Red-Edge while the changing pattern at NIR band depends on the vegetation type. The analysis on chlorophyll content, leaf structure, and absorption related to copper, gave an overall mechanism explanation for the spectral characteristics of copper-stressed vegetation and the wavelengths used in CSVI. The results and conclusions in this paper, contribute new knowledge of copper-stressed vegetation reflectance and the CSVI, and provide mechanism basement for the remote sensing of copper-stressed vegetation.
