The natural environment is essential for human survival and development since it provides water resources, land resources, biological resources and climate resources etc. As a developing country, China has witnessed a significant change in the natural environment in recent decades; and therefore, monitoring and mastering the status of the environment is of great significance. Due to the characteristics of large-scale and dynamic observation, remote sensing technology has been an indispensable approach for environmental monitoring. This paper reviews the satellite resources, institutions and policies for environmental monitoring in China, and the advances in research and application of remote sensing from five aspects: ecological index retrieval, environmental monitoring in protected areas, rural areas, urban areas and mining areas. The remote sensing models and methods for various types of environmental monitoring, and the specific applications in China are comprehensively summarized. This paper also points out major challenges existing at the current stage: satellite sensor problems, integrated use challenges of datasets, uncertainty in the retrieval process of ecological variables, scaling effect problems, a low degree of automation, the weak ability of forecasting and comprehensive analysis, and a lack of computational power for massive datasets. Finally, the development trend and future directions are put forward to direct the research and application of environmental monitoring and protection in the new era.
This paper developed a practical split-window (SW) algorithm to estimate land surface temperature (LST) from Thermal Infrared Sensor (TIRS) aboard Landsat 8. The coefficients of the SW algorithm were determined based on atmospheric water vapor sub-ranges, which were obtained through a modified split-window covariance–variance ratio method. The channel emissivities were acquired from newly released global land cover products at 30 m and from a fraction of the vegetation cover calculated from visible and near-infrared images aboard Landsat 8. Simulation results showed that the new algorithm can obtain LST with an accuracy of better than 1.0 K. The model consistency to the noise of the brightness temperature, emissivity and water vapor was conducted, which indicated the robustness of the new algorithm in LST retrieval. Furthermore, based on comparisons, the new algorithm performed better than the existing algorithms in retrieving LST from TIRS data. Finally, the SW algorithm was proven to be reliable through application in different regions. To further confirm the credibility of the SW algorithm, the LST will be validated in the future.
Land surface temperature (LST) is one of the key parameters in hydrology, meteorology, and the surface energy balance. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) Enterprise algorithm is adapted to Landsat-8 data to obtain the estimate of LST. The coefficients of the Enterprise algorithm were obtained by linear regression using the analog data produced by comprehensive radiative transfer modeling. The performance of the Enterprise algorithm was first tested by simulation data and then validated by ground measurements. In addition, the accuracy of the Enterprise algorithm was compared to the generalized split-window algorithm and the split-window algorithm of Sobrino et al. (1996). The validation results indicate the Enterprise algorithm has a comparable accuracy to the other two split-window algorithms. The biases (root mean square errors) of the Enterprise algorithm were 1.38 (3.22), 1.01 (2.32), 1.99 (3.49), 2.53 (3.46), and −0.15 K (1.11 K) at the SURFRAD, HiWATER_A, HiWATER_B, HiWATER_C sites and BanGe site, respectively, whereas those values were 1.39 (3.20), 1.0 (2.30), 1.93 (3.48), 2.53 (3.35), and −0.35 K (1.16 K) for the generalized split-window algorithm, 1.45 (3.39), 1.08 (2.41), 2.16 (3.67), 2.52 (3.58), and 0.02 K (1.12 K) for the split-window algorithm of Sobrino, respectively. This study provides an alternative method to estimate LST from Landsat-8 data.

China faces increasingly serious water scarcity due to the uneven distribution of available water resources, rapid economic development, and water pollution. The current war on water pollution by the Chinese government requires nationwide water quality information at high spatiotemporal resolution that can be obtained by only remote sensing (RS) methods. However, it is challenging to remotely retrieve such information from turbid Case-2 waters. This paper reviews four aspects of the major achievements in remotely sensed coastal and inland water quality in China. Specifically, achievements in atmospheric correction prior to water quality retrieval, progress in water-related sensor design, developments (improvements) to existing Case-2 water algorithms, and advances in oil spill and harmful algal bloom monitoring. Major challenges are identified, including: 1) a large mismatch exists between the water quality information required and RS datasets due to a lack of professional inland water sensors; 2) planned monitoring and field experiments for studying the optical properties of inland waters are scarce; and 3) RS of urban black odorous waters and international rivers is of great urgency. This review may provide scientific guidelines for obtaining information about coastal and inland waters and assist water resource managers and aquatic ecologists in controlling water pollution.
Satellite-based vegetation indices (VIs) and Apparent Thermal Inertia (ATI) derived from temperature change provide valuable information for estimating evapotranspiration (LE) and detecting the onset and severity of drought. The modified satellite-based Priestley-Taylor (MS-PT) algorithm that we developed earlier, coupling both VI and ATI, is validated based on observed data from 40 flux towers distributed across the world on all continents. The validation results illustrate that the daily LE can be estimated with the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) varying from 10.7 W/m2 to 87.6 W/m2, and with the square of correlation coefficient (R2) from 0.41 to 0.89 (p < 0.01). Compared with the Priestley-Taylor-based LE (PT-JPL) algorithm, the MS-PT algorithm improves the LE estimates at most flux tower sites. Importantly, the MS-PT algorithm is also satisfactory in reproducing the inter-annual variability at flux tower sites with at least five years of data. The R2 between measured and predicted annual LE anomalies is 0.42 (p = 0.02). The MS-PT algorithm is then applied to detect the variations of long-term terrestrial LE over Three-North Shelter Forest Region of China and to monitor global land surface drought. The MS-PT algorithm described here demonstrates the ability to map regional terrestrial LE and identify global soil moisture stress, without requiring precipitation information.
